DATE ANNOUNCED FOR COUNTY CLEAN-UP DAY 2017 . Moira Murell Chief Excu of Kerry County Council will be on the roads of Kerry with Mayor of Tralee Cllr Terry O'Brien and Noel O'Reilly from KWD .

Volunteers are being asked to participate in the 2017 County Clean-Up Day which will take place on Saturday, 8 April.

Now in its sixth year, the County Clean-Up, which takes place with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling, has proven to be a wonderful community event in which people clean up their respective areas and make their localities spick and span.

The event was launched this evening (Monday) at the Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee to coincide with seminar for Tidy Towns groups from across the county.

The aim of the annual event is to ensure that visiting tourists and locals alike can see the true beauty of the Kerry countryside without unsightly litter strewn on the sides of the roads. Last year 3,500 people volunteered their time to clean sections of road and other public places in Kerry, and collected 7,000 bags of waste - amounting to 70 tonnes of waste.

This year the County Clean-Up Day is being extended and adopted by our neighbours in west Cork.

It is hoped to have as many groups, communities and individuals as possible out on the day to help create awareness and in turn help prevent people littering. Posters will be placed in local shops in the coming days encouraging people to sign up and correspondence is being sent out to all the voluntary groups and Tidy Towns committees who have been involved over the last six years.

‘Getting the active more active and the inactive active’

A new six-year strategy for the further development and promotion of recreation, sport and physical activity in the county has been launched by the Minister of State at the Department of Tourism and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD. The launch this evening (Monday) at Siamsa Tíre featured two panel discussions on various aspects of sports policy and how best to promote recreation and more active lifestyles in the county.

The launch of the new Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership Strategic Plan 2017- 2022 was attended by the Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, John Treacy, the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell and the many agencies which are represented on the KRSP board.

The new plan focuses on the mission of the KRSP to increase participation in sport and physical activity by people of all ages and abilities in Kerry. Three key inter-related themes have been identified – participation, partnership and governance, and profile – with the aim of further developing the combined potential of stakeholders and providers in getting the active more active and the less active, active.

Chairperson of the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, Jimmy Deenihan said it was a plan for everyone: ‘The objective here is to maximise the number of people leading an active lifestyle and I am confident that it will have an impact on the health of people in the county. Kerry has so much to offer in terms of recreation and physical activity which is all linked to improved physical health and well-being,’ he said.

Among the guest speakers for the panel discussions on the benefits of sport and physical activity were former rugby international, Keith Wood, Kerry senior football manager, Éamonn Fitzmaurice, world champion swimmer Ellen Keane, and Gavin Hennigan, who achieved a record-breaking 5,000km solo row across the Atlantic.
