Kerry Motor Club’s Ray Stack and Sean Hegarty explain the sport of rallying to the school children of North Kerry.

SCHOOLCHILDREN in North Kerry got an unexpected midweek treat when rally drivers and their cars visited four schools in the area on Tuesday.

Kerry Motor Club’s Kerry Winter Rally at Banna Beach Resort will take place on Sunday, October 30. The event will be run over closed roads in the Abbeydorney and Kilflynn areas, so in
preparation for the event, club members visited Abbeydorney National School, Scoil Treasa Naofa, Kilflynn, Ardfert Central National School and Scoil Naomh Erc Kilmoyley.

Rally drivers PJ O’Dowd, Ray Stack and the rally’s clerk of the course, Sean Hegarty, introduced the schoolkids to two rally cars, a Ford Escort Mk2 and a Talbot Sunbeam. They allowed them to try on race helmets and explained the safety equipment in each car.

.

At each school, the club members launched a colouring competition, and the entries will be displayed at the Banna Beach Resort over the weekend of the rally.

“I think some of the teachers and principals were more excited than the kids,” said Sean Hegarty.

The rally will pass by or very close to each school on October 30  and Tuesday’s distraction from daily studies served as a way to promote the rally and educate the pupils on road safety at the same time.
