MEMBERS of the Tralee Toastmasters Club got into the spirit of Halloween last night with a special fancy dress-themed evening.

And where better to hold it than the luxurious surroundings of the Ballyseede Castle Hotel, known worldwide for its ‘haunted hotel’ reputation.

“Our members come out in all sorts of regalia for a night of pure fun,” said club PRO, Michael Mac Egan. “We’ll share our party pieces, have a bite to eat and really just get to know each other better, especially after COVID.”

Over 20 members of the club showed up and really made the effort for the occasion. The club meets on the first and third Mondays of every month at the St Brendan’s Pastoral Centre at 8pm. New members are always welcome. Scroll down for photos…

Unprecedented Numbers Of Patients Presenting At UHK Emergency Department

.

MANAGEMENT at University Hospital Kerry are asking the public to, where appropriate, contact their pharmacy, GP or South Doc before presenting at the Emergency Department.

This is due to what they describe as “absolutely unprecedented levels of presentation over the past number of days” at the ED in the hospital.

“As a direct result of the volume of presentations, there is extreme strain on physical capacity within the Emergency Department itself and on bed capacity for those who require admission,” reads a statement from hospital management. “Our focus and priority is to ensure patient safety in the Department and throughout the hospital.”

.

As of 10am this morning, there were 28 patients awaiting beds at the Emergency Department with a further 59 in ED awaiting review and over 200 inpatients throughout the hospital.

“Additionally there are Covid positive patients across a number of wards. The situation is further compounded by a Norovirus outbreak on three wards,” reads the statement.

“To ensure all patients receive the highest standards of care, mitigation measures are underway and daily review of the situation. Given the prevailing status of the hospital, we asking patients to only attend the ED in the event of an emergency. Where appropriate, we are requesting the public to contact Pharmacy / GPs/South Doc in the first instance and explore all other options available to them prior to presenting to the Emergency Department.’

“Where you do require to present with an emergency, please anticipate lengthy delays.
UHK would like to extend a very sincere ‘Thank You’ in anticipation of the public’s co-operation with these arrangements,” concludes the statement.

Kerry Artists Complete Residencies At Cill Rialaig Retreat

.
James Hayes

TWO Kerry based artists, Bláithín MacDonnell and James Hayes, completed Kerry County Council sponsored residencies at the nationally and internationally acclaimed Cill Rialaig artist retreat in Ballinskelligs recently.

Each artist was awarded a two week residency in a cottage studio on the spectacular Bolus Head rent free with utilities paid by the Arts Office at Kerry County Council.

“We were delighted to work with Cill Rialaig to help this residency happen,” says Hannah Pinckheard, Assistant Arts Officer with Kerry County Council. “Artists need time and space to make their work. Investment in the arts is always richly rewarded.”

James Hayes is a free-lance visual artist, illustrator and qualified architect based in Kerry. He is skilled in the disciplines of painting, illustration, and architecture. Hayes’ arts practice is primarily based in oil painting, but also extends to encompass hand drawing and a form of hybrid digital image making.

Bláithín Mac Donnell work incorporates performances in unexpected locations and mediums and is concerned with how we share and retell stories in the digital age. Her work seeks through narrative to bring seemingly abstract events closer to the viewers experience.

Bláithín Mac Donnell

“The residency at Cill Rialaig provided much needed time and space to focus and reflect on my practice,” says Bláithín. “I had a very productive time making new work inspired by the locality. It was a wonderful experience and I hope to be able to return one day. Thanks to the council for their support.”

“Cill Rialaig offers ideal conditions to think and create,” agrees James. “This visit afforded me the opportunity to progress various paintings in building my next body of work for exhibition, whilst also to develop the design of a large-scale public mural project currently underway in Kerry.”

The Cill Rialaig Project, founded by Dr Noelle Campbell Sharp, is a voluntary body whose main aim is to develop and maintain a retreat for artists and writers from Ireland and abroad. It involved the redevelopment of the pre-famine village of Cill Rialaig as a retreat for artists, poets, writers, film makers and composers.

Seven studios, a meeting house and library and a utility house have been completed at the village. More than 5000 Irish and international artists have completed residencies there.
