A NEW reading guide from Children’s Books Ireland celebrating picture books and illustration is now available in every branch library in Kerry.
‘Picture This’ features over 230 recommended reads for children and young people aged 0–18, which have been reviewed by experts in children’s literature.
The guide aims to break down barriers to children’s reading, making books of all kinds accessible to children across Kerry, including those who may have reading difficulties or whose first language may not be English or Irish.
Continued below…
Each review is accompanied by a ‘Read also’ recommendation, bringing the total of books included to over 450.
Picture This focuses on books with strong visual narratives, including wordless or silent books, graphic novels and comics, picture books for all ages and graphic diary-style texts.
The guide aims to highlight books, series and texts to encourage reluctant readers or those with language barriers to engage with reading.
Commenting on the launch of the Picture This Elaina Ryan, CEO of Children’s Books Ireland, said: “Pictures are important. They are rich and expressive and joyful and complex. As a child, they’re our first dip into the world of storytelling – but they’re not something to be left behind once a child is comfortable reading text. Pictures on the page aren’t just a stepping stone, they’re a journey in themselves.
“Presenting an alternative route to the linear progression from picture books to chapter books, we want Picture This to give children and young people in Kerry just a little bit of space to discover a love of reading at their own pace, to read stories in formats they never knew about or would never have considered, to come back again and again to an illustration, experiencing the joy of finding something new each time.
“We particularly hope that these stories will have special appeal for young readers with reading difficulties, or those whose first language may not be English or Irish.”
Testament to the increased visibility of excellent books for children as Gaeilge, the guide, whose Irish name ‘Amharc! Breathnaigh! Féach!’, translates to ‘Look! Look! Look!’, features 29 Irish language books.
These include new releases, such as An Slipéar Gloine by Fearghas Mac Lochlainn and Paddy Donnelly, and family favourites such as Geansaí Otto by Sadhbh Devlin and Tarsila Krüse. All books from Irish authors, illustrators, publishers or those written in the Irish language are highlighted in the guide with a shamrock.
Picture This is now available for free in every library authority in Ireland and in sixty participating bookshops islandwide. The guide is also free to download from the Children’s Books Ireland website: www.childrensbooksireland.ie.

The Best of Kerry was launched in late August, promoted via Radio Kerry’s radio and digital platforms and shared by businesses and communities countywide.
Radio Kerry listeners and social media followers were initially invited to nominate their best of Kerry in 17 categories, which ranged from Best Beach to Best Takeaway, via the station’s website.
In this phase over 40,000 nominations were received spanning the county from north to south and east to west. They were then shortlisted to the top 5 in each category with two categories showing a tie for 5th place!
The shortlist was published and once again it was opened to a public to cast their votes in the 17 categories. Almost 150,000 votes were registered over a two week period which resulted in the top choice in each category being rewarded with a Best of Kerry 2022 Award.
Continued below…
Fiona Stack, General Manager, Radio Kerry said, “One the reasons we decided on doing the awards was we were conscious that there was a lot of negativity around – bad news that was unavoidable about the economy, utility bills, the Ukraine, and climate change. While all these are realities – we all know that Kerry is a beautiful place with great people, great businesses and great communities. And those stories need to be told too”.
Gearóid Linnane, CEO, Lee Strand said “Lee Strand is delighted to collaborate with Radio Kerry to sponsor the Best of Kerry Awards 2022. The awards were a tremendous success, recognising the importance of supporting local and celebrating everything that is the best in our Kingdom from breath-taking beaches to fabulous food. What is great about the Best of Kerry Awards is that awards were based on people’s choice and it was fantastic to see customers voting and showing their support. We would like to congratulate all of the winners and everyone who was nominated for an award over the past number of weeks.”
Third party software was used to handle Best of Kerry nomination and voting processes. In the interest of fairness great care was taken to ensure that block nominating and voting did not unfairly influence the final results.
Radio Kerry and Lee Strand wish to acknowledge the support of John Stack, Dúchas Comhaltas Centre and Hazel Byrne, Kerry Sports Academy. The Best of Kerry will return in 2023.

A LOCAL woman has spoken of the benefits of volunteering overseas, crediting Kenya with ‘blowing her mind and changing her outlook forever.
72-year-old Joan O’Regan, who lives in Ballymullen, was recounting her time spent volunteering in Kericho County in Kenya with Irish NGO, Brighter Communities Worldwide.
The retired French teacher, who taught at St. Michael’s College in Listowel, had a fortuitous chance meeting with the Co-Founder of the charity Maria Kidney, which this year celebrates 20 years of shining a light on inequality.
Continued below…
“I was visiting my son Jack who lives in Nairobi and on the bus journey from the Airport I got chatting to this very lively, bubbly Corkonian,” said Joan, who tells how she got involved in Brighter Communities below…
“She was full of life and energy and regaled me with stories about the many projects the charity started in Kericho County. I was really struck by the fact that the input of local people is rightly at the core of the charity’s work. People are key to the Brighter Communities Worldwide model – people making choices about their own development based on their values.
Brighter Communities Worldwide works in partnership with the people, this has lasting, sustainable benefits. Communities must own projects if they are to about real change and this happens through a strong base of local volunteers and a team of local staff.”
“That bus journey flew; I was so interested in the various stories of their health, education and income generating programmes and let me tell you, once you meet Maria Kidney you don’t forget her! I met her again at an event in the Irish Kenyan Society and she persuaded me to volunteer”.
“I took the jump and went for it. I had always wanted to volunteer and Maria gave me the nudge I needed!
A group of us, including some from Tralee Mountain Club went to Ndubusat. It is an area of huge natural beauty and we helped to develop the sustainable tourism project there.
I went back in 2019 and helped to facilitate the Life Skills Courses. These courses are basic skills that people can use in their everyday lives and crucially, pass onto others. For example I saw how building little smokeless stoves makes such a massive difference in people’s lives. It’s not a huge thing in our world, it is monumental in theirs, it’s life changing”.
“It was hard for people to do the Life skills courses, for instance they had to take time off work, not an easy task. They had to get to the venue, very difficult for them as they had lots of terrain to traverse and in the majority of cases had to walk miles.
“However, they showed great determination and thirst for learning .That was the constant thread in all my dealings with the people there , their hunger for learning and knowledge. It is remarkable and so refreshing. They are so immersed in the community, it means the world to them”.
“They have so little but yet they can smile, they can laugh, they are a joyful people. It’s beautiful to witness and it changed my outlook completely. I go with the flow now, I’m not as fearful. It’s a great freedom really and one that I am so grateful for”.
“My sister came with me in 2019 so I suppose the volunteering bug is definitely spreading! I would really urge people to try and volunteer with Brighter Communities Worldwide if they can at all. I can’t wait to go back, it’s got under my skin now”.
“I am delighted to be able to play my part for Brighter Communities Worldwide. For twenty years they have been shining a light on inequality and it is an absolute privilege to help them.
They are holding their annual Kenya Ball on the 12th November in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork and this is always a tremendous social occasion, and crucially a very important part of their fundraising efforts.
It will be better than ever this year as it had to take a hiatus during Covid so people are just dying for the opportunity to have an occasion to get dressed up for and have fun at.
It will be an opportunity for Brighter Communities Worldwide to look back at the amazing strides it has made for the past twenty years and importantly, to look towards the next twenty as there is still so much to do.”
“Kerry people love travelling to Cork, if only to boast about the Sam Maguire Cup so here’s hoping for a great contingent from the Kingdom!” concluded Joan.
• Brighter Communities Worldwide’s annual fundraising event – the Kenya Ball – will take place on Saturday, November 12th at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, helping the charity to continue shining a light on inequality. Visit www.brightercommunities.org for tickets and more information on the charity’s programmes.

Our young squad of boxers at Tralee Boxing Club have been keeping up the hard work this week with a trip to neighbours,Sliabh Luachra in Castleisland, for a night of sparring last Wednesday.
A change is as good as a rest, and it was a great opportunity for our boxers to get put through their paces by such experienced, dedicated boxers and coaches.
A brilliantly organised night as per usual, the kids enjoyed themselves immensely and honed their skills in a supportive, encouraging environment. TBC owe a huge thanks to Jenn, John, Jake, James and all the crew at SL, and we look forward to having all the guys come visit us here at the club in the next few weeks.
We would also like to wish former TBC boxer Mary Mc Donaghthe very best of luck on her journey to Italy with the Irish team for the European Junior Championships this week. A fabulous, talented young boxer, we have no doubt Mary will be a huge asset to the Irish team and will not fail to impress during the competition.
Kerry Mental Health and Wellbeing Fest is kicking off again shortly. The annual Fest began in 2018 to raise awareness of the supports and services for mental health in the county andschedules free events that empower people to engage with the five ways we can all improve our wellbeing.
The organisers have found that men are traditionally very slow to partake in wellbeing events, and the isolation that many experienced during covid, has had a negative impact on wellbeing in general.
Tralee Boxing Club has partnered up with the Fest this year to offer some free events aimed at encouraging our own members, and men in our community to improve their wellbeing, connectwith others, be active, and keep learning.
As part of the programme we will offer a free beginners boxing class for men over 40 on Thursday 13th October. We hope this class will encourage more men to get active, meet others with similar interests and learn a few boxing skills along the way.
A handful of TBC’s own ‘mature’ men, (for want of a better word) will run the session and will be on hand to offer advice and support on keeping fit in later life, better nutrition, and the positive impact boxing has had in their own lives.
TBC will also run a coffee morning on Saturday 15th for members of the club. It offers a chance for new members and family to connect and integrate into the club community, have a cuppa and chat with some of the coaches, volunteers, parents and other long term members.
TWO music artists make their way to Tralee this Friday night, September 30, for a free gig in ClubHeadBangBang at The Greyhound Bar.
The double header, brought to you by non-faction, features Laurie Shaw and three piece art-punk band Pretty Happy at an event supported by Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and Kerry County Council through the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme.
Laurie Shaw is a musician and songwriter who writes and records in a home studio in Kilgarvan. He has crafted over 90 albums since 2010. These albums are mostly of alternative pop, heavily influenced by music of the 60s and 70s such as garage rock, disco and Afro-Beat.
Continued below…
He has a lyrical style that is distinctly observational and narrative-based, delivered in his own accent and dealing with themes of isolation, life in rural areas, geography and social behaviours.
He has performed around the country with his backing band and worked with the Irish based labels Little L and Sunshine Cult to release cassettes as well as UK label Sunstone Records to
release a double L.P.
His recent records “The Great Southern” and “Bat Sanctuary” are centered around the town of Kenmare and his time growing up there.
Shaw is currently working on an album centred around the supernatural folklore of the county which he hopes to release in early 2023.
Pretty Happy is a 3-piece sister-brother-best friend art-punk band from Cork known for intense theatrical live performances, and embracing the idioms and energy of their home city.
In the last six months they opened for Future Islands, Gilla Band, Pillow Queens, The Mary Wallopers, toured the UK with Altered Hour and toured Europe and the UK with Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Body/Head), and performed at Primavera Sound, All Together Now and Raw Power in London.
In November they open for Pavement in Dublin. Pretty Happy are diverse artists who enage with theatre, film and visual art.
In June this year they curated QUARE a celebration of queer art in Cork with one-day open-air event in St. Anne’s Park in Shandon for Cork Midsummer Festival.
For their forthcoming debut EP, the trio teamed up with producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy (Lankum, Black Midi) at Hellfire Studios in Dublin. The new material, due for release in late October, will reveal a more expansive textural sound.
TRALEE Chamber has welcomed the overall initiatives introduced in Budget 2023 to support business and the expansionary approach of the Government to address many of the needs of the most exposed members of the business community.
However, Colette O’Connor CEO Tralee Chamber, said the 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector should be retained beyond February of next year.
“We must enable and empower our SMEs to continue to compete and remain productive throughout this time,” she said.
Continued below…
“Most importantly, it means investing in the places where we live and work. In many respects the Government has listened.”
“However, we are disappointed to see that the 9% VAT rate has not been retained beyond February 28th, 2023. This will have significant impact on the hospitality sector. At a time when we should be dampening now on inflation, this was a measure that could have been taken”.
“We welcome the announcement of the two new business support schemes to help businesses with the cost of electricity and gas”.
The first scheme of €200 million administered by Enterprise Ireland for larger firms involved in exporting and manufacturing.
The second scheme is targeted at SMEs the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme TBESS, will cover 40% of the increase in electricity or gas bills, up to a maximum of €10,000 per month per business.
“Tralee has a severe lack of accommodation which impacts employers in attracting skills and talent to work in Tralee and North Kerry. Tralee Chamber see the new property tax as a positive move to incentivising property owners to put their properties back on the market and in turn attracting business and talent to the Tralee area.
“We called for a Budget which would support businesses. We appreciate the challenges facing Government in delivering on every ask of the business community, but there are missed opportunities in this Budget,” Ms O’Connor concluded.

THE Inspired group held their ‘Promoting Inclusive Employment’ event at Ballygarry Estate on Friday, September 23.
The event aimed to raise awareness among local employers in relation to the recruitment and retention of people with intellectual disabilities in the workplace.
Over 25 local employers were represented at the presentation, which showcased the range of supports available to them through the Inspired Inclusive Employment Programme.
Continued below…
The event highlighted how employers across Kerry can access and recruit potential employees with a broad range of talents who are willing and able to work.
Presenter for the afternoon, Stephanie Dinham, the Career Transition Coordinator at Inspired, steered employers through the supported employment process and demonstrated how career transition training and hands-on job coaching were already showing promising results.
Jim Garvey Finance Director Supervalu said; “the presentation dealt with concerns of employers in a very honest way.”
Jacinta Walsh, Manager at Penney’s Tralee, said that the presentation “was a great success and we were delighted to be a part of it. It was wonderful to see how important work is to the Inspired participants”.
The event also focused on the need to create awareness and provided an understanding of how inclusive employment practices can benefit, companies, their staff, and the individuals involved.
Videos shown on the day were a testament to the fact that the Inclusive employment programme had already made a significant impact in its first-year post-covid, with over 18 local employers successfully engaging in the initiative.
Programme participants and employers provided insight into their experiences which gave other employers an opportunity to hear valuable feedback.
Rachel, whose role was MC for the event said; “I work at the Bons hospital, and it means a lot to me because I help out the patients, I love my job and I love sorting out the forms”.
“What work means to me,” said Lauren who works in Penneys’, “is being part of a team and I enjoy working with Belinda and Mandy and all the team in Penneys.”
Liz Maher, Manager of Inspired added; “today’s event showcased the importance of creating awareness around the benefits of hiring people with intellectual disabilities. There is a growing need for employers to recognise how inclusive practices can have a positive impact on their own employees while creating added value to their business”.
The event closed with a note from the Chairperson of Inspired, Kay McCarthy who thanked the sponsors, Dormant Accounts Fund for funding the Inclusive Employment Opportunities programme and Kerry ETB and Solas for funding the training event.
Kay also thanked employers, Inspired manager, staff, board of trustees and participants for coming together to celebrate their achievements to date.

TEDxTralee, an independently organised event, licensed by TEDx, returns to Siamsa Tire on Thursday, October 6, with the theme of ‘The Good Room’ and as part of the An Turas Mor – Homecoming Kerry Festival.
Local Curators and Co-Coordinators Bryan Carr and James Finnegan felt that after the stunning success of TEDxTralee 2021, whose talks have been viewed on the online worldwide TED platform over 270,000 times, that there was another opportunity to promote Tralee on the International TEDx map with another series of an eclectic series of talks and presentations from local, national and international speakers.
The 14 speakers come from a variety of backgrounds and unique experiences all sharing their stories and big ideas.
Continued below…
From an initial submission of 48 speakers, these individuals were selected and assisted over a number of weeks and months in developing their presentations.
Speakers include actor and playwright Martin Mahon from Tralee, autism expert Sharon McCarthy, pioneer of organisational narrative, leadership storytelling, Thaler Parker and Crime Scene Investigator Ciaran Prior. For the full list of speakers, click here.
“We are delighted, proud and honored to be able to give these wonderful, inspiring and thought provoking Talks a platform, covering a range of topics from the personal to the global perspective,” said Bryan and James.
“It was always the aspiration for last year’s event to be the first in a series of legacy events promoting Tralee, Kerry and Ireland under the TEDxTralee Banner. This year, with the development of the An Turas Mor series of countywide festivals and events, a wonderful opportunity presented itself to raise the bar once again.”
They also want to encourage and give practical experience to the next generation of production talent working in conjunction and collaboration with seasoned event project leaders.
TEDxTralee gratefully acknowledge the support of all their partners including Tralee Chamber Alliance, Shannon Star Entertainment, The Rose Hotel, M.EDIA, Siamsa Tire, Quails Partners and Connect Publications as well as the sponsors of An Turas Mor including Kerry County Council, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Failte Ireland.
BANNA Coastcare were out in force again on Sunday taking part in this year’s Big Beach Clean. Sixteen youths joined the clean-up, removing 20 bags of rubbish from the beach and dunes in just one hour.
Banna Coastcare saw a fantastic turnout on Sunday for this year’s Big Beach Clean, approximately 30 willing volunteers gave just one hour of their time to help clean up Kerry’s beautiful coastline.
Despite a number of other clean ups taking place on Banna over the previous two weeks, approximately, 20 bags of litter were collected.
Continued below…
The bags were filled with marine litter which included, fishing line, net and ropes and terrestrial litter mostly made up of plastic bottles, crisp and sweet wrappers, cigarette butts, plastic bags, face-masks and glass bottles. Some other finds included, a shopping basket, two syringes, a nappy, shoes and flip flops and an oil drum.
During the Big Beach Clean, volunteers were asked to carry out a marine litter survey to quantify the amount and types of litter found on Banna.
These surveys are aimed at heightening awareness about the issue of marine litter and serve as an indicator of the magnitude of the problem. Clean Coasts share this information with the international Ocean Conservancy to form part of the worldwide survey.
Rachel Geary and Maeve Ferris of Banna Coastcare wished to thank all the volunteers, in particular the younger ones, whodedicated their time to make a difference. A special thanks to Salty Souls Cafe for rewarding the younger volunteers for the efforts.
Rachel said; ‘‘it was another fantastic event, it is so heart-warming to see people come together to help combat the problem of marine litter, every piece of litter that is collected is a piece of litter that won’t pollute our oceans or harm our wildlife.”
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors launched their 2022/2023 season at Garvey’s Supervalu in Tralee on Monday ahead of the start of the Super League campaign this weekend.
The League and National Cup champions took a short break from preparations for the opening game of the season, and what promises to be a stern early test for John Dowling’s new look charges, at home to local League rivals Flexachem KCYMS Killorglin on Saturday night.
Following the departure of four of their outstanding players from last season namely; Aaron Calixte, Nikola Roso, Ron Elksnis and Brandon Cotton, the Warriors recruitment department were busy over the summer bringing in three exciting additions to the set up.
Continued below…
Andrée Michelsson steps into the point guard spot vacated by last season’s Super League Player of the Year Aaron Calixte and the 6’2’’ 25 year old Swede will lead the Warriors offence from the top of the key.
Michelsson, a former Icelandic U20 international, joins the Warriors following a season with BBC Rendsburg Twisters in Germany where he averaged over 21 points per game.
The dynamic American De’Ondre Jackson comes into the Warriors set up hoping to build on his rookie season last year when he tormented defences up and down the country with NUIG Maree.
He finished the season in third place in the scoring stats in the League with only Aaron Calixte and Killester’s Karon Harrell bettering his average of just over 20 points per game.
Continued below…
The Warriors third import player is 6’8’’ forward Matija Jokic. The 24 year old and former U20 international with his native Montenegro, has experience of playing in both Iceland and Germany with Hottur Egilsstadir and Recklinghausen respectively.
Kieran Donaghy, Eoin Quigley, Darragh O’Hanlon, Daniel Jokubaitis and captain Fergal O’Sullivan bring their collective wealth of skill and experience to the squad. The younger players who made their breakthrough last season James Fernane, Stephen Bowler and Keelan Crowe also take their places on the roster.

THERE’S less than 90 days to Christmas and preparations are already in hand to make it another memorable season in Tralee.
Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry County Council are focusing on bringing family interactive events of a high standard to the town this Christmas.
With the support of Oliver Hurley Productions, the aim will be to bring the magic of Christmas to the streets of Tralee through new and creative initiatives.
The focus is to run major interactive events with the objective being to bring people from all over Kerry and further to Tralee town in the lead up to Christmas.

Building on the wonderful decorations and lighting of previous years, the proposed events will also enhance the visuals in the town centre, creating a magical and festive kingdom.
The preparations for the Christmas season have been warmly welcomed by the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy.
“Christmas is always a special time for family and community and this year there is a wonderful programme of events being arranged for people of all ages. I would encourage everyone to participate and to enjoy the holiday season,” he said.
Colette O’Connor, CEO Tralee Chamber Alliance, outlined some of the plans for the festive season.
“While the town is already established as having one of the top festive light displays in the country, we are really building on that and utilising the fantastic amenities including the Kerry County Museum and Island of Geese, while showcasing some of the local talent we have here in North Kerry. ”
“There will be a competition “Follow the Magic” running throughout the build-up to Christmas which will put the focus on our wonderful retailers, there will be a new guy town or should I say “new Elf”…watch this space and all will be revealed later!”
“And as you’d expect there will be Christmas markets with some fantastic shows for families every weekend through December, culminating in what is the traditional end to the celebrations in Tralee — a fireworks display on New Years Eve,” added Colette.
More details on the events for Christmas in Tralee will follow in the weeks ahead.
DEATH OF BRENDAN DOWLING: There was great sadness in the Club and in the local community last Tuesday (20th Sept) when news broke of the death of our current Club President, Brendan Dowling. Brendan was appointed to that position in 2010 following the passing of Fr. Mícheál Galvin and like Fr. Mícheál he took a keen interest in Club affairs during his tenure of the last twelve years.
Brendan began his involvement with the Club with success. In 1955 he was a member of the great MH team that won the MH Co. Championship that year – defeating a fancied Ballyheigue team by 9-4 (31) to 2-2 (8). Brendan wore the Number 8 jersey that day and he and his fellow centre-field man, Frank Tiernan dominated mid-field on that September day and contributed in no small way to our brilliant victory.
Two years before that, at the aged of 16, he was a member of our MF team that reached the 1953 Co. Final, going down to Castleisland in a low-scoring game (1-0 to 0-1).
When his playing days were over he continued his involvement in Club affairs and served as Assistant Secretary for a number of years before becoming one of the Club’s outstanding Chairmen for a four year term during the 1986-1989 period. It was during Brendan’s time as Chairman that the Club developed their new Clubhouse/Bar in Connolly Park which was officially opened in June 1989. His sons Eddie and Tommy played with the Club – Eddie was a member of the SF Co. Championship winning team in 1994.
And what a turn-out on Saturday morning for the removal of his remains from Connolly Park to St. Brendans Church and from there to Rath Cemetery. Thanks so much to everyone who took part in the Guard of Honour and to everyone who contributed during the Mass and the Graveside, including our own Club Chairman, Shane Lynch.
SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently: Eileen O’Mahony (nee Turner), Leith West and formerly St. Brendan’s Park; John O’Hanlon, Upper Tonevane; Michael Doran, Casements Ave. (brother of the late Richard, one of the Club’s great Card Players); and Margaret McCarthy (nee Doran), Rockpark Ave. and formerly Brosna.
With both sides already through to the quarter finals this 3rd and final round –robin qualifier was just to determine first and second positions on the Group 3 table and in Beaufort on last Sunday afternoon (25th Sept) Mid Kerry led all the way through this game to achieve this top of the table status.
After a measured start by our lads on at least three occasions it was the home side who opened the scoring after three minutes and they added two more points just inside the 10th minute. From the kick-out Conor Horan won possession and after a good move up field it was Conor again in possession to open our scoring with a well-taken point from play. A minute later David Mannix scored our second from a free after a foul on team captain, Michael O’Donnell. Both sides then had a point each by the 15thminute – ours from Conor Jordan after being put through by Kieran Donaghy. We failed to score during the second quarter while Mid Kerry added three more to put them four ahead at the break (0-7 to 0-3).
Seán Quilter, who came on for the second half, had a pointed free inside the second minute but then Mid Kerry added two from play in quick succession to put them five ahead. We were back in the game by the 37th minute when Michael O’Donnell netted to reduce their lead again to two points. Mid Kerry pointed again three minutes later and then during a seven minute spell up to the 49th minute we produced our best performance of the afternoon, scoring three unanswered points to level the game for the first time.
However that was as good as it got for us as we failed to score for the rest of the game while Mid Kerry added a further five points and a consolation last minute goal. Their goal tally could have more but for at least three outstanding saves by Wayne Guthrie. The first came in the 23rd minute of the first half. The second came in the 22nd minute of the second half. We all thought those two were outstanding , and they were, but it’s difficult to find a word to describe his third and final save in added time – ‘awesome’ is hardly sufficient to describe it.
Cian Purcell missed the game though injury after making his Co. Championship debut last week. Also making their debuts today were Eoghan Carroll and Gearóid Fitzgerald.
Prior to the game there was a Minute’s Silence in honour of our recently deceased Club President, Brendan Dowling.
Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Jack O’Shea, Niall Fitzmaurice, Greg Horan, Conor Jordan (0-1), Paul O’Sullivan, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (1-0), Barry Shanahan, Armin Heinrich, Michael O’Gara, Conor Horan (0-2), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Kieran Donaghy, David Mannix (0-1 – one free).
The knock-out quarter finals will now go ahead on the week-end after next with a possible double header in Austin Stacks Park on the Saturday night (8th Oct) and in Fitzgerald Stadium on the Sunday afternoon. We have drawn Feale Rangers and it will be Dingle .v. Dr. Crokes; Mid Kerry .v. Templenoe and East Kerrys .v. Kenmare Shamrocks.

In a game that was irrelevant to both sides , having both lost in rounds one and two. Lining out with out a number of regulars gave us an opportunity to give game time to a number of panelist’s who have put in a huge effort all year.
While we competed well for long periods of the contest , the home team pulled away late on when they got through for a couple of goals.
The fixture brings our involvement in the competition to a disappointing end having lost convincingly in all three rounds.
The management and players particularly will now need to lift themselves for the upcoming Club Championship Final against Templenoe, which will no doubt be a very difficult task, but one that would salvage some satisfaction for the years effort.

Great news..
The Gaelic Games Associations are pleased to announce that former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, has agreed to be independent Chairperson of the integration process between Camogie, GAA and the LGFA .
It’s great to hear that moves are afoot to integrate all three organisations at national level. This news is very welcome to the ladies of Strand Road.

Austin Stacks 3-10
Last Tuesday we met Austin Stacks in round 3 of the Town League. It was our rivals who struck the psychological first blow on the night.
We will be going for glory during the week as we’ll be in Connolly Park next Tuesday evening as ourselves and Austin Stacks again do battle for a place in the final. The scene has been set, will be do it.
STRAND ROAD BLUES
Strand Road Blues 3-05
Churchill 5-05
Pressure is for tyres and our young blues were determined from the start to prove that last Wednesday in Pat Healy Park scoring the opening point. Churchill then got a quick grip on the game and both teams started feeding a hungry attack to leave the score at half time Strand Road Blues 3-03 to Churchill’s 4-02.
The visitors continued to add to their tally with a point straight into the second half followed by a point from the home side….
Our team manager Mary was delighted with her girls on their performance of the year. Great team work and we’re proud of each and every one of them.
Next Wednesday both teams meet again, this time in the Spa pitch for the semifinal. Best wishes to everyone!

U16 GIRLS
A brilliant training session again last Thursday which everyone enjoyed. The highlight of the evening was playing our U14s who marked their team mates and our U16s who also marked their own players in a fun game before the end of training.
Plenty of laughter from the pitch during the game and messing galore! Great to see so many happy faces coming off at home time.
We’re delighted to welcome Reagan to our team. Looking forward to seeing you!
Best wishes to everyone on Tuesday evening as we travel to Beale for the North Kerry league.
Well done to our ladies who played Glenflesk in the Championship semifinal last Sunday morning in Glenflesk. We only had 13 players because of college and work but our ladies gave it their all against the Glenflesk team.
We struggled to score much in the opening half. Unfortunately this allowed the home team to pull ahead and we were unable to catch up.
From number 1 right through to number 13 the girls played as a team giving great account of themselves . We didn’t come through the battle to claim the honours but we will be back in time..
Many thanks to everyone who travelled to support .
COLLEGE WISHES
College bound are many of our ladies, off in different directions around the country are these besties! Best wishes to all of you from everyone in our club!
Juvenile Notes: Great to see such high numbers in attendance on Sunday morning for Academy and also by our U7s and U9s who kept a tradition that is going for the last 45 years when they traveled to play Dr. Crokes on Sunday.
We are delighted with the dedication showing by each child throughout the last number of months. Thanks to their parents for their continued support and encouragement each week. And to our dedicated coaches who give up their time to train and encourage the children.
U5 Boys:
Another fantastic turnout by our U5 Boys this weekend.
They might be our youngest players but they have showing great ability over the last number of months. This week the focus was on kicking with accuracy through fun games. They enjoyed a few fun games at the end as they do every week. Well done to all the boys keep up the good work.
U6 Girls:
The girls enjoyed their training session which was filled with fun and key skill learning as always. They practiced their kicking and hand passing skills
and finished the training session with some fun games for all to enjoy. Well done to all the girls and their wonderful coaches.
U7 and U9 Boys:
The GAA is an organisation that thrives on traditions. On Saturday 24th of September our U7 and U9 boys kept a 45 year tradition alive as they travelled to play Dr. Crokes in Killarney.
Young footballers from Kerins O Rahillys have been making this trip since the late 70s and a great rapport has been built between the two clubs over the years. Our U7 and U9 teams played three games each and had a wonderful experience.
The bus trip and the treats after went down very well with all the players. Well done to all our young narries and their coaches for giving their time to provide a great day out for the boys.
U8 and U10 Girls:
Enjoyed another morning of training with their wonderful coaches. The girls are preparing for their next game in a few weeks time by concentrating on the accuracy of their kicks and looking for their fellow players to pass it off to. Well done to each and every one of them on a fantastic training session.
U11 Boys:
Our U11 boys will play Firies this Thursday evening in Ballyrickard for a challange game. Please check clubZap for more details.
