Austin Stacks GAA Club News

.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Lying second from bottom on the Co. League table we have to win our last two games in the competition to have any chance of remaining in the Division 1for the coming season. At the moment our R10 game, at home to Kilcummin, has been fixed for next Sunday (25th June) at 2pmwith our final round game a fortnight later, away to Gneeveguilla.

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-13; Glenflesk 1-12.

This was a classic game of two halves played in Connolly Park on last Friday evening (16th June).. In the first half there were a total of 21 scores (Stacks 2-10; Glenflesk 1-8). In the second half there were just seven scores – Stacks three points to four for the opposition. Glenflesk opened the scoring with a point after just 25 seconds but went into the lead within three minutes with points by Cillian Litchfield and Luke Chester – a lead we never lost thereafter.

We are now still involved in this competition – with two wins – against Glenflesk and Rathmore and a defeat to Gneeveguilla. Seven of our nineteen players who performed on the evening got on the score sheet – with Conor Myers (1-3) and Shane Bastible (1-1) the chief scorers.

Team: Michael Tansley, Ruairi O’Connell (Capt), Niall Fitzmaurice, Seán Moynihan, Joe Reidy, Cillian Litchfield (0-1), Luke Chester (0-2), Shane Carroll (0-1 free), Dean Rusk, Gearóid Sheehan, Shane Bastible (1-1 – one free), Noah Townsend, Donnacha Sayers (0-3 – one free), Pa McCarthy (0-2), Conor Myers (1-3 – penalty goal; one free).

Subs used: Ciarán O’Connell (ht), Andrew Morrissey (36m), Daniel O’Rourke (51m), TJ Hogan (56m).

THE C TEAM: Austin Stacks 2-10 (16); Luane Rangers 6-7 (25).

Friday night saw our gallant Dream Team take on a very good side from Laune Rangers which included, a still very capable Mike Frank Russell at full forward. Our Management team of Aidan and Tommy O’Connor ably assisted by Kevin Francis O’Carroll.A very good match conducted in the best of Sportsmanship, in a clean competitive game.

We had a couple of crucial injuries but still had a decent and strong team. Led from goals by Brian Ó Hargàin with Shane Kelliher Keelin Pierce and Tom McLoughlin, Billy Stack Joe Looby and Evan Foley the backs, at midfield were Enda Cahill and Damien Hogan , while our forwards consisted of Brian O’Sullivan Joe Kinsella and Dean Scanlon while inside line was David Courtney  captain, Kyle Fitzgibbon and James Jimmy Charles.

Laune Rangers scored 2 early points before in the 11th minute Damien Maireapointed from play from a Dean Scanlon pass, this was followed 2 minutes later by a superbly taken goal for us by Brian O’Sullivan. Laune Rangers pulled back another point before an absolutely cracking save from Brian Horgan for us in the 15th minute. From resulting save the ball ended up with David Courtney who pointed well. Hogie won kick out and passed to Enda Cahill who duly split the posts, to put us ahead by 1-03 to 0-3pts.

A couple of fumbles followed which resulted in a laune Rangers goal to level in the 18th minute. Heads didnt drop and we bounced straight back with 2 points from play from Evan Foley, the 1st from 40yds plus. The 25th minute saw our keeper dazzled by sun and an unfortunate lob into the net, not to be put off, a point down our lads bounced back again with points from Courtney and Enda, in the 27th and 29th minutes which was followed by a great ball to James Charles from David Courtney, and James Charles cool as you like finished professionally to leave us leading at half time by 2-07 to 2-03.

Laune Rangers were out of the blocks fast in the second half, scoring 2 goals in the first 2 minutes to go 2pts up. We made a few substitutions with Stjohn coming in for Kyle, while Marc Carmody Darragh Moriarty Adam Conway and Tom Crowley were also introduced. Unfortunately, we ran out of steam and though points were added from Enda Cahill,  David Courtney and a brace from Joe Looby, Laune Rangers finished off much stronger to finish the game with a 6-07 to 2-10 victory.

Many lads were in the equation for our Celsius Menswear Man Of The Match with Killian having a big 1st half on Mike Frank while Looby and Courts were on fire, Damien Hogan and Enda were strong, but all thanks to the great staff of Celsius, John and Mike Murphy, Frankie Murphy and Jay Murphy as this week’s much deserved Man Of The Match was young James Charles, who had his best performance in 18 months, well done and much deserved.

We will now, next meet Laune Rangers in the Shield Final so hopefully some lessons will have been learned and we can finish off the final better. A big thanks to the bar staff of Kevin and Aileen Miller and the lovely hot food thanks to Annette Carmody , and thanks to all those who supported us on Friday night, much appreciated. ROCKIES ABÙ

Thanks to Kevin O’Carroll for that comprehensive report.

THE D TEAM: Our D team have still just one game played in this five round competition to date (a brilliant win against Scartaglin by 5-14 to 1-1 in round 2) Our 5th and final round game, away to Clounmon, has now been rescheduled to this coming Friday evening (24th June) at .7.30pm.

KERRY PROGRESS: Well done to the Kerry Seniors as they progress to the All Ireland Quarter Final after their big win over Louth last Sunday. Their 28 points winning margin (5-24 to 0-11) was the fourth highest in Kerry’s 134 year history (first in 1889) in Senior Championship football. They won by 29 points against Waterford in 1974 (7-16 to 0-8), by 33 points against Clare in 1947 (9-10 to 0-4) and their biggest ever win was also against Clare in that Miltown Malbay game in July 1979 with 36 points to spare (9-21 to 1-9). And when, if ever, did we go through a 35 minute first half without one wide and score 2 goals and 15 points.

CONGRATULATIONS: to Doireann Barrett (daughter of Eddie) who was one of the recent Winners in The Irish Women’s Award Ceremony in Dublin. Well done Doireann.

County league round 1.
The senior ladies  travelled to Ballyduff to play their first round county league game on Sunday afternoon  and after a hard fought game we came away with both points on a score line of 2-12 to 0-9, We played with the elements in the first half and went in at half time on a score Mitchels 1-7 Ballyduff 0-5.

Some staunch defending from Tanya , Lucie and Shannon in this half kept us in the lead with the goal coming from Ava and points from Diana and Grace. The second half saw Ballyduff close the gap but with Simi , Clara and Aoife buzzing around the middle aided by  Ashleigh at center back we got control back with points from Aoife , Ava , Diana pushed us 6 ahead just as a heavy shower came down but it didn’t dampen our game and a goal from Emilia closed out the game.

Kayleigh kept a clean sheet with Lorna ,Julie and Ellen defending stoutly and Shauna holding the full forward line we ran out winners. Well done ladies our next outing is v Dingle away details to follow.

U15 Boys

This week we wished Jackson Brosnan the very best of luck as he was competing with his horse Bitcoin in Hagen in Germany as part of an Irish Squad in the future champions.

This is a huge achievement for Jackson well done from all in Ballymac

U13 Boys

On a fine sunny day, the Ballymac boys took on Fossa in the U13 County Final. From the throw in Fossa took an early lead. The Ballymac boys dug deep and kept in touch with the opposition, trailing by only 3 points at half time.

The second half saw Fossa increase the pressure going further ahead but some excellent goal keeping by Jack Lynch kept us in the game. The Ballymac lads were unlucky not to score 3 goals throughout the game due to excellent goalkeeping by the opposing no.1.

Excellent play from so many of our lads saw the Ballymac boys dominate for a period of the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and at the final whistle Fossa came out on top on a score line of 3.13 to 1.11, a scoreline that doesn’t reflect the determination and hard work put in by all on the team.

Many thanks to Eimear Galvin of CA Galvin for sponsoring new tops for the boys ahead of their final, your support is very much appreciated.

Seniors:

Both our teams are in action next weekend when Round 10 of the county league takes place.

In division 1 we are away to Dingle who sit 2 points behind us, albeit with a game in hand; this encounter has been fixed for Sat next 24th June with a throw-in time of 6 pm.

Our division 6 fixture will take place 24 hours earlier, on Friday night 23rd June in Strand Road when Firies are the visitors – throw in here is @ 7.30 pm.

Congrats to Kerry seniors and our own Micheál Quirke on their display against Louth on Sunday – Kerry’s win,  along with Cork’s surprising win over Mayo sees Kerry now top the group and straight through to the All Ireland quarter finals which will take place on the first weekend in July.

Hard luck to Mark Fitzgerald as his Limerick side exited the Tailteann Cup on Sat when losing out to Laois on a final scoreline of 1-14 to 0-14; Limerick led at half time and were 5 points ahead, 0-14 to 0-09 with 24 mins left to play but failing to score for the remainder of the game, they allowed Laois back into the game before a late Laois goal decided the issue.

Kerry minors will take on Monaghan next Sat, venue and time to be confirmed, for a place in the All Ireland final – we would like to wish Tomás, Eddie Lacey and their colleagues all the best in their quest for minor glory.

FÈILE FUNDRAISER……

Féile is an Irish word meaning festival.

Féile Peile na nÓg is a national festival of Gaelic football for girls and boys under 15 years of age. Pre Covid Féile would have been for U14s.

It was first held in Cavan in 1982 with a total of 40 boys teams participating. Girls did not participate until 1994.

Over the years we have had both girls and boys teams represent our county at National Féile in various parts of the country, in different divisions and always a great honour.

After phenomenal displays of skill, passion and pulsating encounters on May 1st our U15 ladies were crowned division 3 , 2023 Féile winners and will represent Kerry at regional Féile on Saturday, July 1st . This will be hosted by Moyne Templetuohy ,Co. Tipperary.

Féile is special and is one of the best events for juveniles in the LGFA and GAA calendar.

Féile being a festival is a celebration so is a very special day for everyone participating as well as the supporters. It’s about youngsters celebrating their love for the sport they adore- Gaelic football!

Calling on families, supporters, friends and club members to get behind this fundraiser as final preparations are made for the big day. There are costs involved in attending Féile which includes transportation and looking after the team on the day and feeding them.

If you think you can help with our fundraising efforts over the next couple of weeks you can support our GoFundMe on our club’s Facebook page or give any donation at all to our ladies treasurer William or our U15 manager Mark. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed.

Our U10 girls taking a break after training.

U12 GIRLS

The youngest of our ladies were out last Tuesday evening against Annascaul for round 1, division 4 of the county league.

The home team started brightly winning the throw in and with several unanswered scores in the first two quarters.

Our hosts  controlled the game well in the first half and the town team battled. The second half saw our narriettes launch a strong comeback. There was tension on the sideline as the supporters watched a nail biting third and fourth quarter…who would come out with the spoils!

There was excellent football, incredible defending and goalkeeping on display from both sides.

Well done to our Kerins O’ Rahillys team who showed great spirit and turned the game around in the second half. Our proud captain on the night who led her team to victory was Jessie Griffin. Fantastic teamwork and it’s wonderful to see the team gelling together!

The boys displayed great skill and teamwork. Well done to all players and thanks to parents for travelling. Thank you to Ardfert for hosting.

U11

A trip to Beale (Ballybunion) on Thursday, was our last away game in this phase of the County League Go Games. A decent turnout of U11s took to the sandy pitch and, in the beautiful sunshine, put together some great football. Both games were hotly contested, and the boys had to dig deep and really play for each other.

Some tired boys really enjoyed the ice pops after the games. Well done to all the boys who travelled and the parents who provided excellent support. We have a challenge match away to Ballymac on Monday evening and a home game against Duagh on Thursday.

U12 Girls

The U12 Girls were away to Inbhear Sceine Gaels B last Thursday. It was a long trip to Kenmare on a sun-soaked evening, but the availability of the bus made the trip a memorable one for all the girls with plenty of sing songs to pass the time.

The game was a tough one with the girls succeeding in extra time. As always, we were very proud of all the girls and the songs got louder on the journey back to St. Pats!

Training continues Monday evening from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. We play round 2 of the county league away to Duagh next Thursday at 7pm.

U13

Our U13’s trained on Tuesday and Thursday last in great spirits after the victory on the previous Sunday. We worked on small, sided activities which included attacking and defending and the lads have really improved since the beginning of the year. We have one outstanding game from the Tralee/St Brendan’s League.

This should be fixed in the coming days and parents will be notified of same once confirmed. Finally, we wish all our players representing their districts in the County Athletics Community Games championships which take place this coming Saturday and Sunday in Castleisland.

U14 Girls

Training continues Monday evening from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Will be in touch during the week with details of our next match as soon as we receive fixtures.

U15

Our 15 team are putting in a good block of training and playing challenge games in anticipation of the central league which starts on Wednesday 28th June.

Training continues Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week.

Seniors

This Round 10 game which was a must win for us proved to be heart stopping from beginning to end.

With four unanswered points Kieran Hurley, Fergal O Brien each got their own point and Eoin Greaney added two more of his own points. St Senan’s got their first score in the form of a point, Eoin Greaney took possession of the ball to add another point again.

St Senan’s got four unanswered points and a quick goal, with St Senan’s ahead by a goal we needed to push ourselves to close the gap which had happened. With David O Callaghan getting three points, Fergal O Brien another point and Eoin Greaney adding a superb goal it pushed us into the lead before half time.

St Senan’s got one more point before this half ended. St Pats 1-09 St Senan’s 1-05

The second half began with a point from Shane Jordan, St Senan’s put three more points on the board to go two points behind.

Fergal O Brien kept our scoring going with a point, St Senan’s quickly added two more points. With only a point between the teams, Kieran Hurley provided a much-needed point to keep the game in our favour.

Two more points added by St Senan’s, with intensity increasing between the sides and the game turning into a point for point game. Fergal O Brien again got another point but was answered with a quick response of a point by St Senan’s, with time running down and the crowd holding their breath on both sides.

Kieran Hurley and Shane Jordan added a point each to allow breathing space, St Senan’s replied with a point which brought the game to a point between, the clock counting down kept both sides fighting till the final whistle blew. St Pats 1-15 St Senan’s 1-14

U13 Boys: U13 Division 2 County Final: Na Gaeil 4-10, Austin Stacks 1-12. Well done to the Na Gaeil U13’s who defeated Austin Stacks in the County Division 2 final in John Mitchels yesterday evening.

Both teams had met previously this year and this time familiarity brought a fantastic game of football, helped by sensible refereeing by Gary Kissane.

A downpour prior to throw-in made conditions awkward for both sides in the opening period. Austin Stacks shaded the opening period, capitalising on some defensive errors to lead at the interval 1-7 to 1-4.

Our goal came through Andy Costello from a delightful pass from Aaron Donovan who had a superb game from centre forward. After half time, three points down and under serious pressure from their opponents, Ben O’Sullivan pulled off a phenomenal one on one save which would have put us six down.

When Na Gaeil countered, Costello rattled the Austin Stacks net with a magnificent goal after good work from wing forward James Kelly. O’Sullivan’s kick outs were finding their targets as the men in green got into their groove.

In the home stretch Eoin Tansley played a captain’s role with boundless energy, Costello was double jobbing at fourteen and defending manfully and Nathan Anthony was showing his trickery high up the pitch.

Breakaway scores from a free from Costello, a worldie off the outside of the right from Tansley sealed a deserved victory for the men in green.

Rory John O’Brien had his best game of the year at corner back, who showed great composure in collecting a mountain of short kick outs.

Jake Barrett also flourished when the game was there to be won, creating the key goal with an excellent tackle and brilliant quick ball to Donovan.

Overall it truly was a magnificent team effort. A huge thank you to the vocal support from young & old Na Gaeil supporters.

Commiserations to Austin Stacks who played a sporting game and no doubt these boys will have many a battle in the years ahead.

Speaking on the sod turning, Minister Harris said: “This is a really important development for higher education in the Munster region. Tralee Parnells Golf Classic

The club is running its inaugural golf classic on Friday July 21st in Beaufort Golf Club. All funds raised will go to completing works on our new Academy pitch in Pairc na Darach in Oakpark.

In 2022, Tralee Parnells was granted a 13 year licence for the use of the GAA pitch, Pairc na Darach, at the Tralee Sports Complex in Oakpark for their Academy players. In order to upgrade the pitch at Pairc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie, substantial investment is required – over €30,000, of which a substantial amount has already been invested by the club. New ball-stops have been erected, nets on the goalposts have been replaced, landscaping has been carried out and the pitch has been sanded, juvenile goalposts have been purchased. Some final groundwork is required so the young hurlers and camogie players can display their skills on a top quality playing surface in a safe environment.  The club hopes to have the facility ready for their Academy by July or early August.

Entry fee for a Team of 4 in the golf classic is €200. There are also tee and green sponsorship opportunities available, as well as sponsorship of prizes.  Please contact Agnes at 087-8377969 or any member of the Committee for further information.

The club is asking local businesses, parents and supporters of the club to come on board to make this fundraiser a success and to provide the best playing facilities for our young hurlers and camogie players.

Tralee Parnells Hurling & Camogie Summer Camp

Our Hurling and Camogie Summer camp takes place on Monday 24th to Thursday 27th of July. The cost is €50 per child for the 4 days and there are family discounts and daily rates available.

Clodagh Wins Best Singer At AIMS Awards

.
Clodagh Harrington with her award on Saturday night.

THERE was a Tralee winner at the prestigious Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) Awards at the weekend.

The awards were held on Saturday night at the INEC in Killarney attended by hundreds of guests.

Tralee native Clodagh Harrington won the award for Best Female Singer for her performance as Eva Peron in The Light Opera Society of Tralee’s production of Evita directed by Grainne O’Carroll in Siamsa Tire last November.

Sadly her fellow nominees in the production — Sean McElligott for Best Male Singer for Che and Tara Dore for Best Choreographer  — didn’t come away with the awards but it was still a great night for the Society.
