REPORT: A Battle Of The Keepers As Athlone Prevail Over Kerry FC

David Moriarty reports on last night’s game when Kerry FC travelled to Athlone…

ATHLONE TOWN 2-1 KERRY FC

Friday night saw Kerry FC return to the scene of the best night in the senior team’s brief history. Kerry FC were on the road again this week as they faced Athlone Town in The Town stadium.

You need to think all the way back to the twelfth of May when Kerry FC got their first everSenior League of Ireland first-division win against Athlone in what was truly the biggest night the Kingdom side had been a part of since the team was formed in November 2022.

Two goals from Ryan Kelliher and one from Nathan Gleeson ensured they put their names in Kerry FC folklore forever.

.

Last week Kerry earned themselves a hard-earned point at home to Longford Town where it ended 0-0. A battle that finished in a fair result, with neither team doing enough to dominate the entirety of the game.

Goalkeeper Lee Axworthy put in a great shift making a few vital saves to keep the Kingdom in it. Axworthy has done a fantastic job since coming in and even though he is
number 32, he has proved himself and Kerry’s out-and-out number 1.

Coming into the fixture Kerry FC manager Billy Dennehy hailed the team’s performance from last Friday saying, “It was a very mature performance, and the boys looked like they have been playing in the league for the past two or three years.”

Like Dennehy, the travelling support came into Friday’s fixture with the hope of a similar standard in the performance.

It was Athlone who had the dream start. They controlled the possession for the opening five minutes, and it culminated in an opening goal for talisman striker Frantz Pierrot.

A low cross across the six-yard box which had been used quite a bit in the opening stages fell perfectly for Pierrot, who finished off the opportunity to give the home side the lead.

Pierrot had another chance only five minutes later, but he dragged his shot wide from close range. Kerry found it hard early on to get a real foot hold of the game, when they did get a few passes going they created great space in dangerous areas.

.

A lovely bit of work down the right side from Ryan Kelliher and Daniel Okwute saw Okwute free himself up for a shot. Unfortunately, his touch let him down on that occasion and Athlone were able to clear away the danger.

Athlone came close to doubling their lead when a similar cross to the goal along the six-yard box was thankfully met this time by Kevin Williams who dealt with the situation.

As mentioned before in-form goalkeeper Lee Axworthy was called into action on the half hour mark.  A long-range Dylan Gavin effort was put over the crossbar by Axworthy and would help the team massively as Kerry would get their equaliser just four minutes later.

A decent bit of hold up play from Sean McGrath gave himself the chance to pass the ball to Leo Gaxha who was out far by the wing.

Gaxha made his way in beating three men and took the effort on from twenty-five yards out and the shot went in off the post to give life into the Kingdom just before halftime.

Gaxha has shown he has a bit of a knack for wonder goals this season. Despite the breathing space of an equaliser, Lee came under pressure again with another shot
from outside the area, yet again he came to his side’s aid and dealt with the oncoming traffic.

Just before half time, Ryan Kelliher had a free kick from distance that hit the target, although it was collected easily by Enda Minogue. After the second half resumed, Athlone had much of the possession and started to dominate the game.

A free kick from Valeri Dolia just five minutes into the half from outside the area went over the crossbar and did not trouble Axworthy in goal.  Kerry had instances in the half where they looked to cause problems. Kevin Williams had a glancing header dragged wide after a superb cross from Sean O’Connell put it into a fantastic area.

With twenty-five minutes left on the clock Kerry had a very well-worked move nearly result in a big chance.

A kick out from Axworthy was flicked on the volley by Gaxha which reached the path of Daniel Okwute on the left wing. Okwute took on his marker and crossed the ball into a
good area. Unfortunately, it was collected again by Enda Minogue.

Athlone started to pile on the pressure with twenty minutes remaining. First Dolia had a shot drag wide from outside the area. Then Kennedy Amechi was called into defensive duty to block a close range shot from Frantz Pierrot.

All the chances started to get on top of Kerry and eventually Athlone reclaimed their lead. A strong volley across the area from Valeri Dolia was hard to deal with from the Kerry defence and Dylan Gavin was there to finish off a golden opportunity into the far post.

In the dying moments of the game Kennedy Amechi worked well down the right wing to free himself up and give a cross into the box. Again, unfortunately there was no one there and Minogue claimed it.

A real battle of the keepers on the night where Athlone’s came out on top as the home side went away 2-1 winners. Kerry did brilliantly to go in at half time level but did not do enough in the second half to put the Town under any serious pressure.

The defence seemed a lot more solid, but the forwards could not capitalise on the great platform that was set up by their men at the back.

The Kingdom are back home next Friday as they host league leaders Galway United, in a game that could see Galway crowned as League of Ireland first division champions.

Fund For Tralee Teen Recovering From Serious Injury Reaches Over €25,000

.
Calvin O’Sullivan Shea.

A GOFUNDME page created just two days ago to help a Tralee teenager who suffered a serious injury on the field last week has already raised over €25,000.

Calvin O’Sullivan Shea, a hugely talented soccer and gaelic footballer, sustained a serious head and neck injury in a recent League of Ireland u14 game playing for Kerry FC requiring urgent medical attention. He is currently recovering in Crumlin hospital.

Damien Locke, Head of the Kerry FC Academy, set up a gofundme page to help Calvin and his family expenses during his road to recovery.

.

The aim was to raise €5,000, but by this Saturday morning, the fund had reached over €25,000, showing the immense support from the Tralee community and far beyond.

Calvin had recently signed for Kerry FC from St.Brendan’s Park FC where he played underage football in the Kerry Schoolboys/girls League.

Last August Calvin represented Ireland at the Galway Cup where he scored four goals in the tournament. He is also a hugely promising Gaelic footballer with John Mitchels and everyone wishes him well in his recovery. The gofundme page can be accessed by clicking here.

Know Your Rights: Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

What is the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant?

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant provides funding so you can refurbish vacant and derelict homes. It can also be used to renovate properties that have not been used as residential properties before.

You can get the grant if you are refurbishing the vacant property so you can live there, or so you can rent the property out.

What are the qualifying conditions for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant?

To qualify for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

• The property must have been vacant for 2 years or more. You will not qualify if the property has been left unreasonably or purposely vacant so you can get the grant.
• The property must have been built before 2008. (Before 1 May 2023, only homes built before 1993 qualified.)
• You must own the property or be in the process of buying it.
• You must live in the property as your principal private residence when the work is completed, or make it available for rent. If you are going to rent the property when the work is done, you must register the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board.
• You must have tax clearance from Revenue and your tax affairs must be in order.
• You must have paid your Local Property Tax, if applicable.
• You must not be a registered company or developer.
• You can only get the grant twice. You can get one grant to refurbish a home to live in, and another for a home you are going to rent out.

Continued below…

.

How do I prove that the property was vacant?

Utility bills can be used to show that a property has been vacant at a particular time. If you can’t get utility bills for the property, you can provide a signed affidavit stating that the property has been vacant for at least 2 years.

Or, if you have recently bought the property you can get a letter from the seller’s solicitor confirming that the property was vacant.

How much is the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant?

You can get up to €50,000 to renovate a vacant property and up to €70,000 if the property is derelict. The grant is inclusive of the VAT cost of the works.

The grant amounts increased on 1 May 2023. If you applied for the grant before the 1 May 2023 and you haven’t got your grant yet, the new grant amounts can be applied.

If you are living on an off-shore island, you can get up to €84,000 to renovate a derelict building or up to €60,000 for a vacant property.

If the renovation costs more than the grant, you will have to pay for this. You can apply to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) for the Better Energy Homes Grant Scheme.

This grant helps improve the energy efficiency of your home, by helping with the cost of insulating your home or installing a heat pump or solar panels. Work covered by the SEAI scheme is not covered by the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.

The grant must be approved before any work begins.

.

How do I apply for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant?

You should complete the application form and send it to the local authority. You can download the application form or get one from your local Citizens Information Centre. There is a checklist of supporting documents you will need to send in the application form.

The local authority will review your application and documents. They will arrange for a qualified person to visit the property to check that it is possible to do the work and to assess the cost.

The local authority will send you a ‘letter of approval’ if your application is successful. This letter will tell you how much your grant will be.

If you haven’t bought the property yet, you will get a ‘letter of approval in principle’ for the grant. You must sign and return this letter to the local authority, as it forms part of your agreement with the local authority.

You have 13 months to complete the works once your application has been approved

What happens if my application is not successful?

If your application is not successful, you can appeal the decision with the local authority. You should write to them within 3 weeks of the decision, giving the reasons why you are appealing.

Your appeal will be reviewed by someone in the local authority who was not involved in assessing your application. The local authority will contact you with the outcome of this review. This can take up to 6 weeks.

What happens if I don’t want to live in the property or rent it out?

If you got the grant to refurbish a property to live in and then you decide to sell or rent it out within 10 years of getting the grant, you will have to pay the local authority back.

You will have to pay them back for any reason that you are no longer living in the property as your main home within 10 years of getting the grant.

If you got the grant to refurbish a property to rent and you decide to sell the property, or it is no longer available to rent within 10 years of getting the grant, you will also have to pay the local authority back.

The amount you will have to repay depends on how long you’ve lived in the property or rented it out. If you live or rent out your property for:

• Less than 5 years, you have to repay the full amount
• Over 5 years but less than 10, you have to repay 75% of the grant
• More than 10 years, you don’t have to pay back anything

Is there a grant for conservation advice for refurbishing traditional farmhouses?

If you have a traditional farmhouse and want to apply for the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, you can get an additional grant of up to €7,500 for expert conservation advice on how to refurbish your vacant property.

The Conservation Advice Grant Scheme for Vacant Traditional Farmhouses was launched on 14 June 2023. Under the Scheme, you can get an experienced conservation expert to complete a survey of your property and write a report with conservation advice on how best to refurbish it

To qualify for the scheme, the property must be a traditional farmhouse or cottage. This means that it is a modest house, built using traditional techniques and local materials, such as thatch, stone, slate, earth, wattle and un-sawn timber.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

Finnegan On Films: Tarantino’s Explosive Debut Among Saturday’s TV Choices

.

James Finnegan says there is a period drama, a stunning musical, a graphic indie film and a black comedy to look forward to on Saturday…

Today’s films are still competing with high profile, international sports, but there are also some similarly gifted cinematic stories and performances available.

Emma Thompson won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for her take on Jane Austin’s much loved novel Sense and Sensibility (Saturday 3.15pm RTE1).  She also stars as Elinor Dashwood while Kate Winslet plays Elinor’s younger sister Marianne.

They are members of a wealthy English landed gentry family, who have to deal with sudden destitution on the death of their father.

They are forced to seek financial security through marriage, although their feelings are in contrast to their intended partners.

.

Also starring Alan Rickman (Colonel Brandon), Hugh Grant (Edward Ferrars), Greg Wise (John Willoughby), this was directed by Ang Lee in his first entire film in the English-Language.  If you enjoy period drama, this is a multi-award winning example of the best of the genre.

Hugh Jackman heads the cast of The Greatest Showman (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) and it is now almost impossible to imagine anyone else taking the role of PT Barnum as he creates his amazing touring circus in the New York of the mid 1800’s.

He recruits the forgotten, lost and abandoned into an innovative and imaginative show that brings him to the highest levels of society.  However, the success comes at potentially a great personal cost.

With an ensemble cast including Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson, an outstanding score by John Debney and Joesph Trapanese and original songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, this is a feel good musical hated by the critics when released, but loved by the public.

.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s explosive and graphic debut Reservoir Dogs (Saturday 9.30pm TG4) has many of his familiar trademarks.

When a failed diamond heist ends in a bloodbath, the criminals lie low as they try to work out if someone betrayed them, especially as they don’t know each other’s true identity. Could one be an undercover cop?

.

It is interesting to note that this made as much money in the UK as it made in the whole of the USA when released.

Starring, among others, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen (whose character has links to Vincent in the later Pulp Fiction), Chris Penn and Steve Buscemi, plus a Seventies influenced soundtrack, it is not hard to see why this is regarded as a milestone for independent film making.

In Downhill (Saturday 9.40pm RTE1), married couple Billie and Pete Stanton (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell) have a near death experience by an avalanche during a family ski holiday in Austria.

Their behaviour during this emergency results in a re-evaluation of their marriage and indeed their whole lives. Enjoy!
