Teahan Signs New Contract With Kerry FC

.
Ronan Teahan in action.

KERRY FC has confirmed that midfielder Ronan Teahan has signed a long term contract, which will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2025 season.

Teahan, who is playing his debut season in the SSE Airtricity First Division, has featured in 28 games in this year’s campaign to date, making 22 starts.

Teahan missed just one game this season, while sitting his Leaving Certificate Examinations back in June. Teahan is likely to hit his 2000th minute in the Kerry shirt on Friday night against Bray Wanderers.

Continued below…

.

Teahan becomes the second player in the squad to sign a professional contract with the club, following the announcement that Ryan Kelliher had also committed his next two seasons to the League of Ireland newcomers.

The former Iveragh United player in his native Cahersiveen, Teahan is a familiar face in Mounthawk Park, having joined the Kerry FC Academy at Under 15 level before graduating first to the Under 17s before teaming up with the 19s.

It was announced in January that Teahan would be lining up with the senior team ahead of the 2023 League of Ireland campaign.

Speaking to Kerry FC after signing the contract, Ronan Teahan said; “I am delighted to have signed with Kerry FC for the next 2 years. I can see the club is headed in a positive direction so I think this is a great chance for me to improve and further my development. I’m grateful to everyone at Kerry Football Club for this opportunity.”

Also speaking following the deal, first team manager Billy Dennehy said; “Ronan is a young player that has come into the League of Ireland set up over the last number of years with us. He has gone through a lot of obstacles in terms of his size and height but his determination, character and heart makes sure his ability always shines through.

“He has taken to senior football and League of Ireland for the first time seamlessly in relation to his performances on the pitch and also in relation to his improvement over the last number of weeks as well.

“He is another player that epitomises what Kerry FC is about. He is a player who most likely wouldn’t have had the opportunity to showcase his talents and abilities if Kerry FC was not available to him in his home county.

“So having this project here in Kerry shows the talent pool and the opportunities available to footballers like Ronan who can play in the top level from his home in Cahersiveen and what people can aspire to in the future as well. We are delighted in the club that Ronan Teahan has committed himself to Kerry Football Club for the next couple of years and I look forward to seeing what he can do for the team going forward as he continues improving in the next few months and years ahead.”

Over 300 Patients Waiting On Trolleys At UHK During August

.

THERE was a decrease in patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry during August compared to the same month in 2022.

There were 314 patients waiting on trolleys this month compared to last August’s all-time high of 343.

Nationwide, over 9,720 patients, including 167 children, went without a bed in Irish hospitals this August according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s TrolleyWatch figures.

Continued below…

.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “There’s no doubt this winter is going to continue the pattern of difficult and dangerous times in our hospitals.

“The summer period used to see an easing off in overcrowding figures but this year numbers admitted to inappropriate spaces, trolleys and chairs have been alarmingly high too early in the season. The new so-called target of no more than 320 people on trolleys set by HSE was only achieved on five days this year.

“Last year was the previous record for August overcrowding, and the winter that followed was honestly beyond what we could have imagined. This August is somehow worse again, and our members are worried, for themselves, and for their patients, about what is in store for them over the coming months.

“The ongoing increase shows how urgently we need to implement safe staffing legislation, so that hospitals have sufficient staff to diagnose, treat and discharge patients safely, and vulnerable people are not languishing on trolleys and chairs for days at a time.

“Medical evidence shows that spending more than six hours on a trolley is detrimental to a patient’s long-term health outcomes. In stark terms it increases the mortality rate by over 8%.

“The INMO is of the view that this situation is not being met with the required urgency or focus required. The constant state of overcrowding in our hospitals is a leading cause of nurses and midwives intending to leave their current work areas and indeed the professions altogether.”

AS usual, it was the parents that looked anxious and teary rather than their little ones, as the  junior infants began their school journey at Holy Family NS on Wednesday morning.

There are 43 pupils separated into Ms Laura Daly’s and Ms Claire Fitzgerald’s two classes and they immediately set about playing with the many toys available after the parents left on Wednesday morning.

Despite the distraction of toys and new friends, they patiently posed for photographs to mark their first day at school. Scroll down for photos…

Billy Ryle: Nearly 2,400 Students Applied To CAO From Kerry

.

Billy Ryle says extra places have stabilised the CAO points as Kerry’s applicants sweep the board in Round One of college offers…

The excellent results achieved last week by Kerry’s 1,645 traditional Leaving Cert candidates saw them sweep the board in CAO Round One, when college offers were released at 2pm on Wednesday.

After a few nervous days, the tension was lifted when a large majority of Kerry’s CAO applicants received a college offer.

On a pro rata population basis, Kerry’s CAO applicants will be close to the top of the class in securing college places.

That scenario, of course, depends on students’ ability to finance their education and to secure accommodation. Any student who is forced to defer or refuse a higher education course due to lack of finance and/or accommodation will be absolutely devastated.

Continued below…

.

A final CAO application figure of 84,228 meant keen competition across many courses. 2,394 applicants applied to CAO from County Kerry.

However, the extra college places on offer this year have resulted in some stability in the points and have retarded the upward trend of recent years. Only nineteen courses had to use random selection this year compared to forty-seven last year.

The new route to nursing degrees through Colleges of Further Education has eased the CAO points for nursing.

While many CAO courses have seen points rise, the extra places have benefitted the applicants. It’s very evident that the provision of extra college places is one way to reduce points requirements and to ease the pressure on young people.

While the majority of the 48,268 applicants to the CAO from the 2023 Leaving Cert class, along with the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Leaving Cert classes, will have the points to meet the course requirements, it will leave many candidates who are presenting previous years’ Leaving Cert results struggling to secure a college place.

Many of these applicants from the pre-Covid era had little or no chance of competing with this year’s inflated grades.

The 2023 statistics prove that the applicants are very efficient in their engagement with the CAO. 57,980 CAO applicants received at least one of the 87,075 courses on offer on Thursday afternoon.

The offers consisted of 52,949 at Level 8 and 34,126 at Level7/Level 6. Offers are issued independently in respect of the two lists (Level 8 and Level 7/Level 6), so that some applicants received two offers, one from each list.

The collective good news is that of the 52,949 applicants who were offered a Level 8 course 31,251 (59%), received their first preference and a very impressive 45,013 (85%) received one of their top three preferences.

Of the 34,126 applicants who were offered a Level 7/Level 6 course, 30,879 (90%) received their first preference and a whopping 33,713 (99%) received one of their top three preferences.

The overriding conclusion from the points’ trends is that CAO applicants are totally focussed on the jobs market.

They applied in large numbers for courses with strong employment growth. UCC’s flagship Biological and Chemical Sciences degree again hit the heady heights of 533, while its Engineering degree has jumped from 510 points to 520.

Physiotherapy at the University of Limerick came in at 589* points. Primary Teaching at Mary Immaculate College Limerick is down from 509 points to 497 and MTU Tralee’s excellent General Nursing Degree dropped from 433 points to 371.

Health Science courses remain very popular putting them beyond the points’ totals of most CAO applicants. Dentistry at UCC, for example, requires a staggering 625 points again this year – a perfect Leaving Cert exam result!

School leavers continue to rush to college in unprecedented numbers. The steady flow also of mature and non-traditional applications is a very healthy development as everybody deserves a second chance.

A quota of places was reserved by CAO for the 6,980 mature applicants and the 10,999 applicants from the PLC sector. Congrats to everybody who secured a CAO offer today.

Ryan Kelliher Commits To Kerry FC

.
Ryan Kelliher.

Kerry FC can confirm that leading goal scorer Ryan Kelliher has signed a long term contract, which will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2025 season.

Kelliher, who is playing in his debut season in the SSE Airtricity First Division has bagged the team 10 goals across both league and cup competitions to date.

In the sides two wins to date, Kelliher has scored 4 of the 5 goals on our way to victory. Having played almost 2000 minutes so far in 2023, the number 9 has become one of the first names every week on Billy Dennehy’s team sheet.

Continued  below…

.

In 30 games, Ryan has been in the squad for 29 matches, starting in 22 and coming off the bench in 6 games.

Kelliher becomes the first Kerry FC player to sign a professional contract, which in itself becomes a historic moment for the club and the player.

Having grown up in Killarney, Kelliher learned his trade in Killarney Celtic before moving into the Kerry FC Academy structures. At the age of 19 and no senior side in Kerry, Ryan made the move back to Killarney Celtic before returning to the club for the 2023 season which is Kerry’s debut season in the League of Ireland

Speaking on signing the contract, Ryan Kelliher said; “I’m delighted to have signed a professional contract with Kerry FC and to commit myself to the club into the future. I can see where the club wants to go and the plans in place are really, really positive. I feel like it’s the right thing to do for me and I’m privileged to represent my county wearing the Kerry FC jersey. Up the kingdom!”

Also speaking following the deal, first team manager Billy Dennehy said “I am absolutely delighted that Ryan Kelliher has committed his future to the club for the next two years. He is a player that has come in to League of Ireland level when I was managing the 19’s and I could tell straight away that he had the natural ability. Obviously the previous season, Ryan had no senior team to play on, so again he was a player in the county with the talent to play at a very high level but there was no platform in his local area to accommodate that. So obviously when we were recruiting players, Ryan, like always, put himself forward in the best possible way in relation to his attitude within training and his effort also. The level of effort he gives on the pitch is massive both during training and match days also.

“This reward is for Ryan on the work he has put in to date. 10 goals in a first season in the League of Ireland is remarkable for a young player in a debut year, but to me it’s a starting block for Ryan and has the potential to go on and score plenty more goals at this level. I think he can keep on improving his all round game and is improving as every game goes by and it is evident when he takes on some established players in the league.

“And the biggest compliment I can give to Ryan is that his attitude to keep going is something that younger players in the academy can look at and aspire to because his commitment, desire, attitude and work rate is something that has got him to this level and now excelling at this level. Very proud of him and his achievements to date and this is only the start, there will be a lot more to come from our number 9.”

Kerry FC Academy News

.

Kerry FC had 4 teams in action at the weekend in league and cup action.

Pride of place this week goes to the under 17 team who gallantly bowed out to Dublin giants Shamrock Rovers in the cup quarter final of the Mark Farren Cup.

Kerry FC 1 v Shamrock Rovers 2.

Kerry produced some excellent football in an enthralling cup encounter in Mounthawk Park on Saturday afternoon. However despite a tantamount effort by this gallant Kerry team Rovers advanced in an all action contest.

Kerry played with a strong breeze in the first half and thanks to good work by Tom Healy in the middle of the park created several chances.Luke Palmer,Andrew Kerins and Josh Bowler all had goal bound chances blocked by defenders .

Todd Bazunu in goal, the younger brother of the Irish goalkeeper was also tested on a number of occasions.

However Kerry could not get that elusive goal in their wind assisted first half.Indeed the Dublin side had the best chance late in the first half. However Darragh Foley dived full length to turn a Daniel Mare header around a post.       Rovers gradually came more into the game in the second half.

In the 51st minute a powerful header by Cian Dillon was unbelieveably tipped over by Darragh Foley to prevent a certain goal. The highly rated Dublin side eventually took the lead four minutes later.

Kerry failed to clear a cross and Josh Kehir netted from close range.Kerry to their credit continued to play some brilliant football and pressed Rovers in possession.

In the 76th minute they got their reward. Josh Bowler intercepted a defensive pass and eluded several defenders before unleashing a 25 metre screamer to the bottom corner.

In an absorbing contest both sides played their hearts out. However it was Rovers who got the winner in the 88th minute.Cian Dillon was at the end of a series of passes and he fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.Kerry rallied again and were unfortunate to have an effort deep in added team cleared off the line.                          Kerry can be proud of their performance and can hold their heads high even in defeat.

They matched this highly regarded Dublin in most departments and will progress from this experience.
Man of the Match Darragh Foley

Under 14 league.Carlow Killkenny 2 v Kerry FC 2.

Kerry played out an entertaining  encounter in Carlow on Saturday. The home side took the lead in the 10th minute through Akachi Ogbulafor. The same player added a second goal shortly after the restart.

However Edison Jahiri set up Calvin O,Sullivan to score a minute later. Moments later Callum Robertson capped a great game when he released Calvin O,Sullivan with a pin point pass.Calvin O,Sullivan still had a lot to do but the prolific goal scorer dispatched in style to equalise.

Kerry had a lot of the play in the final quarter thanks to good work by Odhran Foley and Shane O,Donovan in the middle of the park. Johnny Neillings was unlucky not to bag a goal as he was always dangerous in attack.

The home side also had chances in this entertaining contest. However Shay Fitzgerald was excellent in goal throughout the match.Alex Kerins also was in top form at left back in ensuring Kerry come away with a share of the spoils.
Man of the Match Alex Kerins.

Under 19 league Kerry FC 2 v Wexford FC 3.
This was another entertaining encounter in Mounthawk Park on Sunday. However it was the visitors that came away with the points when the final whistle blew.

They started well and dominated the opening quarter. Wexford took the lead in the 4th minute through Eoghan O,Lionnain .They added a second goal midway through the half when  Evan Farrell drilled in a great goal.Kerry pulled a goal back before half time when Matthew Carroll set up Venis Jahiri to net from distance.

Wexford however added a third goal in the 62nd minute through Mark Imiren.Kerry reduced the deficit once again midway through the half. Nathan Gleeson set up Oisin Breen and Breen fired home .

Kerry tried hard in the closing stages to get an elusive equaliser. Oisin Breen dominated the centre of the park and tried to create chances .Rob Vasiu made fine runs from right back in an effort to break down a strong Wexford defence. Wexford nevertheless held out to claim the three points.
Man of the Match Adam Finn.

Under 15 League Wexford FC 7 v Kerry FC 2

This was a game to forget for this Kerry side.On the day a number of players played well below par and as a result shipped a heavy loss to the home side.Wexford took the lead in the 10th minute through Emmet Ralph. Kerry equalised three minutes later.Ethan Ballard found Rob Keane with a  defence splitting pass and Keane finished with aplomb.

Kerry played well after this and had chances but could not add to their tally.Wexford also looked dangerous in attack. They regained the lead through Kyal Byrne in the 33rd minute and hit a purple patch after this.Ryan Collins,Darragh Butler and Byrne again scored to put them 5-1 ahead before the break.

Ryan Collins completed his hat trick with two further second half goals .A late Ramadan Hadi goal for Kerry could not hide a disastrous away trip to Wexford. On the day Jack Daly was solid at the back.         Man of a Match Rob Keane

Austin Stacks GAA Club News

Senior Men:

Intermediate Championship Rd 3

Castleisland Desmonds 2-11 Austin Stacks 1-8

Austin Stacks started brightly and led 1-2 to 0-2 after 10 minutes; with our goal by Cillian Litchfield after 5 minutes and points both from play by Cillian and Shane O’ Callaghan, but we failed to build on that start and Desmond’s had drawn level (1-2 to 0-5) before their team was reduced to fourteen men in the twenty fourth minute.

Donagh Mc Kivergan added a point from play for Stacks but in the five-minute spell before half time Castleisland hit a purple patch and added 1-4  (3 frees) their goal coming in the 30 minute, when a high floating ball into the square was punched to the net by Ruairi Bourke to leave the HT score Castleisland 1-8 Austin Stacks 1-3.

Unfortunately, things did not improve for the Rock in the second half. After several bad wides, Shane O’Callaghan pointed two from play in the 42 min and 46 min.

Sean Quilter’s point from play in the 50th minute left just 2 between the sides Castleisland 1-8 Austin Stacks 1-6 and the large Stacks support present were hopeful of a comeback for the briefest moment.

Castleisland’s Thomas Hickey pointed from play before Cillian Litchfield scored a very good individual point from play in the 52nd minute (Castleisland 1-9 Austin Stacks 1-7). But no comeback materialised as Castleisland who had been the better team throughout added 2 more points to their tally.

Stacks Sean Quilter settled for a point from play as injury time approached.  Austin Stacks try as they might could not break down the Castleisland defence who thwarted every attack and broke fast to exploit the now exposed Stacks defence who were all forward in a last-ditch attempt at an equalising goal and so it fell to Castleisland’s Luke Curtin to raise the green flag for his side’s second goal of the afternoon right on the 60th minute.  Game, Set and Match.  FT Castleisland 2-11 Austin Stacks 1-8 – (just to note all Austin Stacks scores were from play).

The result means Austin Stacks finished 2nd in their group and have now been drawn to play a group winner, Glenflesk, away from home in the Quarter Finals this Saturday Sept 2nd at 3pm.  The other QF pairings are:
Castleisland V Fossa; Kilcummin V Milltown Castlemaine and Beaufort V Legion.

Senior Men

Our lads travelled to Templenoe last Saturday night for Round 3 of the Kerry Petroleum senior club championship. The game was played in near perfect conditions with a slight breeze favouring Na Gaeil in the first half.

Templenoe got the scoring underway with a point from the throw-in but 2 points from Darragh Reen saw us lead 2 points to 1 after 5 minutes.

Templenoe added a point to level the game before Jack Barry made a crucial save off the line to prevent a Templenoe goal. A third point from Darragh Reen following another excellent long ball out of defence by Diarmuid O’Connor saw us ahead once more but Templenoe converted a free to level the game again.

Another pin-point ball out from defence, this time from Jack Barry, found Darragh Reen and he added his fourth point of the half.

After a couple of wides from Templenoe our wing back Morgan Madden was at the end of a slick move and he rifled over an excellent point to extend our lead to 2 points. Both teams added a point apiece before the break, ours a free converted by Dara Devine, to leave the half-time score Templenoe 0-4, Na Gaeil 0-6.

The immense Darragh Reen started the 2nd half in similar fashion to the first half when he fisted over his 5th point of the game to stretch Na Gaeil’s lead to 3 points.

The teams then exchanged points before a super individual point from Jack Sheehan moved us 4 points ahead with 14 minutes gone. Templenoe replied with a point before our outstanding corner-back Jack Doyle kicked a beauty to restore our 4 point lead.

Soon afterwards Templenoe were reduced to 14 players following an off-the-ball incident but they kept in touch with a pointed free. Templenoe were then lucky not to be reduced to 13 following an incident that saw Jack Doyle having to leave the field with a head injury.

A point by Diarmuid O’Connor on the 30 minute mark restored our lead to 4 points again. Templenoe added 2 points in the 33rd and 34th minute and Diarmuid O’Connor slotted over a free in the 36th minute which appeared to be the insurance score.

However a minute later Templenoe added another point leaving Na Gaeil with a dangerous 2 point lead. In the 38th minute Templenoe won a free in around the 45m line. The kick fell short into the hands of their full-forward about 15m out.

He turned and fired a shot through a crowded square and unfortunately for us it bobbled past Devon and into the net. It was a cruel result for our lads who played some great football on the night. Final score Templenoe 1-10, Na Gaeil 0-12.

Team:Devon Burns, Ryan O’Neill, Niall O’Mahoney, Jack Doyle, Morgan Madden, Eoin Doody,Damien Bourke, Jack Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor, James O’Connor, Tomás Ó hAiniféin, Kieran O’Donovan (c), Kieran O’Connor, Dara Devine, Darragh Reen. There were three changes from the match programme with Tommy Lynch for Niall McCarthy, Jordan Conway for Cillian O’Riordan and Liam O’Sullivan for Liam Poff all starting which allowed us to have a choice of subs when needed.

Kieran Hurley opened our scoring with two quick points and another point from Fergal O Brien. With our three-point lead Dromid responded with a goal of their own, Again Kieran Hurley and Eoin Greaney each stepped up to get a point each.

Dromid managed to get a point to keep the distance between us small, our players put in great effort to pull ahead with a point from Eoin Greaney, Kieran Hurley, and Jordan Conway. Paudie Bailey stepped up to add another point when we were awarded a free,

Dromid quick to gain control of the game added two more points. Eoin Greaney added one final point for us with Dromid adding two final points to this half. St Pats 0-10 Dromid Pearses 1-05

Seniors:

The most significant event of  our senior club championship game on Sunday took place before a ball was kicked,  when we lost the toss and Dingle signalled their intention to play with the aid of the strong breeze.

A team, whose self  confidence has been dented in recent  weeks by defeats to Rathmore and Dr Crokes needed to start on the front foot, gain momentum and get the large crowd behind them.

Instead we found ourselves facing the elements and a non stop wave of attacks as Dingle sought to put up a match winning score – we defended well, broke at pace and picked off good scores of our own.

Dingle had the first two points but Tom Hoare found Conor Hayes following a good run and Conor split the posts for our first score; Dingle had raced into a 6 point to 1 lead by the 12th minute with Kerry senior panellist Dylan Geaney very much to the fore, before Tom Hoare, from a free lifted the siege.

Tom O’Sullivan had points either side of a Ben Hanafin score, before Rob O’Connor effected a fine save to keep us in the game; however, Conor Geaney fired over from a free with further scores flowing to leave the score at 0-10 to 0-05 by the 28th minute. The following five minutes proved most damaging as we conceded a further 4 points without reply to leave us trailing at the break by 9, 0-14 to 0-05.

We dominated the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half and despite hitting a couple of wides we added 3 points without reply through Ben, Darragh and David – Dingle were finding it hard to make any inroads up front due to the efforts of Shane, Darragh and most especially Jake, who belied his tender years popping up all over defence to intercept, block and tackle ensuring we kept our shape and thwarted the best efforts of the westerners.

Paul Geaney was awarded a free in front of goal but his shot was mis-hit and dropped into the grateful arms of Ross who essayed upfield in a counter attack – unfortunately an interception left us open at the back and Paul Geaney found the net.

This was a huge blow given how we had played up to then but though Conor raised another white flag, disaster again struck when a sideline ball, played back to Rob was intercepted,  leaving Conor Geaney with the simplest of tasks in rolling the ball into an empty net.

The result was now a foregone conclusion and we ran the bench from here to the finish, rewarding those squad members who have made a big effort throughout the year.

We will now face a relegation play off with near neighbours Na Gaeil, to determine our senior status for the coming year.

As this contest will result in another Tralee side competing at intermediate level, we again raise the issue of having only 8 senior clubs in the county – large urban areas like Tralee need to be competing at the highest level possible for the good of the county and football in general.

The play off has been slated for Nov 5th but should both sides exit the county championship early, the tie is most likely to be played much earlier.

The campaign has seen us come up short, losing all 3 games but having lined out without 8 of the starters from last year’s All Ireland semi final vs eventual winners Kilmacud Crokes, we are a team in transition and we commend the players and mentors for their efforts to date.

We have a 3 week break now before embarking on the senior club championship where we are in a group with Shannon Rangers, Spa and Mid Kerry – our opening game vs Shannon Rangers has been fixed for Sat 16th Sept here in Austin Stack Park where throw-in will be at 5.30 pm.

The top two teams will advance from each group with group winners playing the runners up in an open draw.

Lotto:

This week’s jackpot stands @ €8,500 – tickets can be purchased online at Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club – Clubforce OR from the following outlets – Betty’s Bar, The Klub, Rock St Post Office and Jimmy’s Food Store.

Nótaí na mBan:

As everyone heads back to school let us all remember that there may be big changes for those who are more timid than some. There’s usually great excitement as children move into a higher class and especially when they are moving from primary school to secondary school. This changeover though can be quite daunting for some.

Please be that team player who looks out for others and shows empathy.

We went in at half time

2-08 to 1-06.

The opposition scored a goal very early in the second half which was followed by five points from our side. Another ball went into the back of the net for ISG , we scored a point and ISG scored 2 more points.

As the final whistle blew there were scenes of jubilation among the team, management and many supporters who travelled to cheer on the team. Thank you!

The final score was

Kerins O’ Rahillys 2-14 Inbhear Scéine Gaels 3-08 after a tremendous team effort from each and every player. We played some top quality football and delivered an overdue minor title.

U8 Girls:

Even though the weather was dreary it did not spoil the quality of football on display Sunday morning from our U8s as they played Stacks in Connolly Park in fun go games. Our goal was to try and get as many attempted solos during the game as possible and the girls did not disappoint. There was some standout performance on the day and a special mention has to be made to Mia McMahon who was superbly strong on the ball and very accurate with her boot. We are still working on marking our girls and will focus on this in our next session. A great morning all round and thanks to Stacks for hosting

U7,U9 and U11 Boys:

At this week’s academy the U7, U9, and U11 boys took to the field for a mixed Academy blitz. This was a great opportunity for the boys to challenge themselves against their fellow academy mates. The weather didn’t stop our girls from putting on a fantastic display of football throughout the field. Despite having a number of players away this weekend, we still had two teams of 9 on the day giving all the girls plenty of game time and they showed some fantastic skills throughout. We the coaches couldn’t be prouder of these girls as they played so well and finished off great team work with some fantastic scores. Well done girls ye are a credit to your club and yourselves. Thank you to Stacks for hosting us in the day.

U13 Boys:

Our U13’s had a hard fought win in the Division 4 Central Region Semifinal vs Churchill on a score line of 1-09 to 0-09 . Kerry Petroleum Junior Premier Football Club Championship:
Group B Round 3 @Ballymacelligott GAA Grounds.

Ballymacelligott 3-11 Annascaul 1-13

Ballymacelligott and Annascaul came into this game with three points each. Sixteen minutes into the first half, Michéal Reidy intercepted a ball in the half-back line, an Annascaul move to up the pace after a Donal Daly goal, he took the ball out of danger into the forwards and Aidan Breen scored a point. This determination and work rate communicated that Ballymac were determined to fight hard for this game.

Ballymac played with a strong wind in the first half. Aidan Breen opened the scoring with a pointed free from Ballymac and Annascaul’s Jason Hickson matched this with a point from a free. In the 21st minute, Daire Keane hit a great ball towards the net only for it to rebound. Niall Collins was there to catch it and passed it to Donal Daly who scored a goal.

Michéal Reidy stopped Annascaul’s counteroffensive that resulted in an Aidan Breen point. Thomas Ashe for the Western side scored a point, his teammate Cathal Ferriter scored a goal and another point from Jason Hickson put Annascaul in the lead for the first time Annascaul 1-03 Ballymac 1-02.

Aidan Breen scored three points. He followed with a free that Niall Collins caught and with great foresight he saw that Dan Shea was loose and the ball ended up in the back of the Annascaul net. Dan Shea added another point leaving the half-time score: 2-07 to 1-03.

In the second half, Both teams traded points, and ten minutes into the half Vinnie Horan scored a goal. The score now was 3-09 to 1-05. Annascaul scored a point followed by another for Ballymac from Daire Keane.

Annascaul scored four points on the trot. Dara Broderick scored the last point from a free for Ballymac. Annascaul scored the final three points of the game from Aidan Crean, Jason Hickson, and Killian Falvey.

Senior Ladies
Cromane 2-13  Ballymac 1-17

The Ballymac Senior Ladies began their Junior A Championship campaign with a hard earned but well deserved one point victory away in Glenbeigh v Cromane on Monday evening in lovely sunshine.

The home team began well with two points in the first few minutes. Ballymac got off the mark with a Roisin Rahilly free. Cromane then goaled from full forward Eimear Burke. Ballymac responded with three Ellie McElligott frees plus points from Rachel Creedon and Aisling O Connell.

Another Ellie mac free was followed by a goal from Roisin Rahilly in what was a really purple patch for our girls. Three points from Cromane were followed by a Rachel Creedon double. Ella Quirke and Keelin Enright got the final scores of the half to make it Cromane 1-07 Ballymac 1-11

The second half was full of passion and total commitment by two teams playing well. Cromane scored first and then Ballymac had points from McElligott (2), and Rahilly.

The Cromane fightback then began with a goal and a flurry of points. Kate Collins nudged us one ahead again.

The home team responded once again to set up a thrilling finale. It was end to end but the game was decided when Kate Collins burst through and fisted over. Cromane had one last chance but a great save from keeper Kerry Hennessy plucking the ball from over the crossbar saved the day.

A cracking opening game to our championship. Thanks to all our loyal supporters who made the journey on the evening.

The last game of the championship saw us play a Ballydonoghue team with their Kerry star Jason Foley back to the fold.
The game was tempestuous at times with black cards a few yellows and two reds to boot but overall it didn’t disappoint as the crowd got a good game of football

Similar to last week we were wind assisted in the first half and by half time we were five points up with Steven Bowler getting the goal after a sloppy piece of defending from Ballydonoghue. Mikey Kelliher and Alan O Donoghue moving well and kicking some lovely scores, Cian Holden industrious as ever around the middle third and Shane Connor making some great runs to create scoring opportunities for our forwards.

The Ballydonoghue goal five minutes form half time was a sucker punch but we rallied to ensure a five point gap was maintained. 1-9 to 1-4 half time

Unlike last week the second half was at least more positive from a scoring perspective. The wind had picked up by this stage but that didn’t stop our gallops forward with quick ball and heads up football.

Ballydonoghue showed some grit and they clawed their way back and 9 minutes into the second half they also pounced on sloppy defending and netted to make it level and game on now! They then took the lead but two mins later we equalized.

Mikey Kelliher kicked a free for us to give us a one point advantage but short lived it was as the next attack saw the visitors level again.

Point of the game came from George Bastible chipping in with a sublime left footed point from the left side of the 14 yard line and with  the game in the melting pot, mitchels brought on super sub Conor Hurley who ran hard at the ballydonoghue defense and after collecting a hand pass from the mighty Shane O Connor, he buried a low ball to the net from the edge of the square to give us some breathing space. Alan Donoghue winning a free to give us a four point cushion to leave us safe again in the intermediate for 2024.

A disappointing campaign overall but we showed we still had some fight left in us and after promotion to Div. 2 this win gives us plenty to build on
Well done to the squad and Manager Brian and mentors Stevie, Buns and Dermot for a very positive result on the day.

Just a notable mention as Our u14 Girls green and gold teams and our u13 boys Green and Gold teams were honored at half time for winning Div. 1  and Div. 13 county titles with the girls picking up 6 and 7 honors respectively. well done to all here for a fantastic season

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies opened their first county championship game today against a very strong Aunascaul/ Castlegrory team in difficult conditions in Ballyseedy. Both teams put in a huge effort in the first half with scores at a premium throughout , heavy rain and a strong wind took from the game but both teams battled hard, A somewhat controversial goal at a premium.

Point deflated our girls but we never dropped the heads and a few unfortunate injuries to key players didn’t help our cause and Aunascaul/Castlegregory ran out eventual winners. Well done to our girls they never gave up and battled to the final whistle. Unfortunately we had a few injuries and wish the girls a speedy recovery, next up we play Kerins O Rahillys in round 3

The mothers and others team who had a blitz in castleisland on Friday evening everyone enjoyed the evening for sport.

Billy To Launch His New Book At Tralee Library

.
Councillor Jim Finucane, Mayor of Kerry was at hand to present Tim Guiheen with the first copy of Billy Ryle’s new book, ‘Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the Football’, at the Organ Donors Memorial Tree in Tralee Town Park on Thursday last. The tree was commissioned in 2014 by Tim’s wife, Mairéad Fernane, who died recently. Included from left are Mairéad O’Mahony (Technology Trainer, NCBI), Lisa Brown (Community Resource Worker, NCBI), Councillor Jim Finucane (Mayor of Kerry), Tim Guiheen, Billy Ryle (Book Author & Donor Organs Recipient) and Sheila Finucane.

A NEW book by well known Tralee man Billy Ryle will be officially launched on Thursday, September 7 at 7pm in Tralee Library.

Senator Martin Conway, the first visually impaired person to be elected to the Oireachtas, will launch ‘Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the Football’ by the Guidance Counsellor and former Austin Stacks GAA Chairman.

In 2018, Billy Ryle, who was enjoying a full and active life, was diagnosed with Fuchs Dystrophy, a disease of the eyes. In Fuchs Dystrophy, fluid builds up in the clear layer (cornea) on the front of the eye, causing the cornea to swell and thicken.

Continued below…

.

This leads to glare, blurred or cloudy vision, and eye discomfort. Fuchs Dystrophy usually affects both eyes, causing the vision to gradually worsen leading to blindness.

It was the beginning of a long and difficult medical journey, which Billy was determined to make in order to save his sight. The treatment for Fuchs Dystrophy involved two cataract surgeries and two corneal transplant operations of donor organs at Bon Secours Hospital.

Simultaneously, as Chairman of Austin Stacks GAA Club, Tralee, Billy was determined to lead his club safely through the Covid-19 pandemic and their winning of the Kerry Senior Football Championship in 2021.

The text in the book is supported by a timeline of black and white photographs including the official photograph of the 2021 Austin Stacks County Senior Football Championship winning team, courtesy of Martin Cleary.

Net profit from the sale of the Book during 2023 will be donated to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI).

There should be a Book available for everybody who attends the launch, as well as a glass of wine or a cup of tea/coffee.

In turn, Billy is requesting that each person might make a donation of €20 euro or more. Donations will also be gratefully accepted for NCBI from business and commercial interests. Billy is hoping to raise €2020 at the launch.

The book will then go on sale online at www.amazon.co.uk. Type ‘Billy Ryle’ in the search box. All royalties in 2023 will go to NCBI.

Billy would like to thank Kerry County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor for hosting the launch in Tralee Branch, Kerry Library. Billy is delighted that the launch is taking place in the Library, where he regularly spends time browsing through the book shelves.

IT was a hectic Friday morning for the Leaving Cert Class of 2023 as they celebrated their results.

While the traditional gatherings at schools to receive the brown envelopes is a thing of the past thanks the availability of results online, there were still a few who turned up at Tralee schools on the morning to meet with friends.

Minister for Education, Norma Foley, visited each school in town to meet with the happy teenagers, starting with Presentation Secondary where she taught for many years.

The First Year students, who began their second-level education journey this week, lined the pathway to the school to greet the Minister.

“It’s been an excellent day, we have a very happy group of students and teachers here this morning,” said Principal of Presentation Tralee, Mairead Finucane. ” The students performed very well academically and it’s a fair reflection in terms of the work they put in and the challenges they have overcome.”

It was an extra special day for twins Scarlett and Isabella Bright who also celebrated their 18th birthday on Friday.

“We’re so happy with the results,” said Isabella. “I was nervous and so excited before receiving them, but it’s been the best birthday present.”

“It’s like all our hard work over the two years has paid off, so it’s been really good,” added Scarlett who looked forward to the celebrations that night.

Then it was on to St Ita’s and St Joseph’s where nine candidates sat the Leaving Cert Applied exams. “The students are delighted, I think most of them received distinctions,” said Principal Grace Sheehan.

There was a warm welcome for the Minister at CBS The Green where she was met by Principal Robert Flaherty.

Deputy Principal Ger Hogan said everyone involved in the school was happy with the results of the 120 students who sat the exams.

“We’ve had a huge number of H1s across all subjects and in general we’re very impressed with the results. It’s testament to the hard work that they and their teachers have put in. In fact one of the teachers remarked that they were almost as nervous as the boys this morning!”

.

“It’s a great celebration to able to share this experience with the students. We place a large emphasis on being part of a family here in The Green and this really is a family celebration,” added Ger.

Next, the Minister made the short journey over to the new Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí where students had gathered to celebrate their achievements.

Ruairí Ó Cinnéide, Príomhoide Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí said there were happy faces all around as they arrived at the school.

“We congratulate the students of the Leaving Certificate class of 2023 who received their exam results today and we also extend our congratulations to their parents and families,” he said

“It was lovely to see so many happy faces around the school this morning with many students having come into the school to meet their friends and teachers despite the fact that students can choose to get their results online.

The results achieved were excellent and overall the students were very happy with their results. They have done fantastically well and we are extremely proud of all our students.

Today is a stepping stone in each student’s life journey and we advise our students to celebrate their achievements sensibly and consider all options that become available to them in the weeks ahead,” said the Principal.
