TREVOR BARRETT MEMORIAL HURLING TOURNAMENT: The official launch of the Trevor Barrett Memorial Hurling Tournament took place in the Clubhouse last Friday evening (18th July) attended by members of Trevor’s family and his Hurling colleagues.
Club Chairman, Aidan O’Connor and Ger McCarthy, Kerry Hurling Official were also in attendance and they, along with Lorraine Counihan, made the draw for the competition which takes place in the Connolly Park and Caherslee pitches on the August Bank Holiday Saturday (2nd Aug). Full details of the fixtures in next week’s Notes. See the Website for Adrienne’s photographs of the launch.

SENIOR HURLING: In the meantime we are due to play Kenmare in the Final of the South Kerry League. The game was originally fixed for this Friday evening but we now understand that it may be brought forward to this Wednesday evening (23rd July). Check Web for updates. Details of the concluding fixtures in the County League have yet to announced also.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Round 8 of the Co. League goes ahead this weekend. Our game, away to St. Michaels/Foilmore, takes place in Ballinskelligs on Saturday evening (26th July) at 7pm.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-11; St. Kierans 1-7.
Our Minors had a good win in Castleisland last Tuesday week (15th July) in round 2 of the Co. Championship. After a very good first half we led at the break by 1-7 to 0-2.
But Kierans refused to throw in the towel and by the end of the third quarter had reduced the deficit to just four points scoring 1-4 without reply in the space of ten minutes. But then we began to dominate again and closed out the game in fine style
Team: Klaudio Dema, Seán Hurley, Niall Carroll-Cane, Dylan Harnett (Capt), Darragh Scanlon, Seán Ryan (0-2), Jack O’Shea, Ciarán Flanagan (0-2), Calvin Foley (1-0), Louis Ryle, Jack Morgan (1-1 – one free), Colin Griffin (0-2), Seán Fitzmaurice (1-2 – 2 frees), Craig Corcoran, Seán Dukes (0-1).
Subs used: Jessie O’Sullivan (40m), Fergal Ryan (50m) (0-1), Anthony Moymihan (56m), Ferdia O’Brien (58m), Jack Kenny (59m).

MINOR FOOTBALL: East Kerry 5-14; Austin Stacks 1-10.
We then had three days of a break before we traveled to Fossa on last Friday evening (18th July) for round 3 of the Championship. However we found this Divisional team far stronger and trailed by 2-11 to 1-3 at half time.
Despite having a far better second half we still could not close that gap and had to give way to a better team on the day.

FOOTNOTE: It’s a pity we couldn’t have marked the occasion with a win. The occasion relates to a record equaling number of competitive appearances in the Minor grade by Ciarán Flanagan. Flan was making his 37th appearance that Friday evening, equaling the record which has been held by John Dennis since 2006.  The next highest is Ciarán O’Connell who is just one behind when he made his 36th appearance at the end of the 2012 season.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Our Co. League semi final against Rathmore did not go ahead last week and no new date has been fixed as we write.
So far in the Town League we have played just one of our five round games (that, our win away to John Mitchels). Our round 4 game, at home to St. Pats, is due to go ahead as scheduled on this Monday evening (21st July) at 7.30pm with the round 3 postponed game away to Na Gaeil due to go ahead on Wednesday evening (23rd July) also at 7.30pm. The round 2 postponed game, (away to Kerins O’Rahillys), has yet to be refixed . And the final round 5 game, at home to Ballymac, is fixed for next Monday evening (28th July) at 7,30pm

U21 FOOTBALL: South Kerry 1-17; Austin Stacks 0-8.
On a beautiful summers evening in Cahersiveen on last Wednesday (16th July) the Divisional side (with all 9 Clubs represented of their 30 man panel) proved too strong for our lads .in the quarter final of the Co. Championship.
South Kerry went into an early two points lead but we were quickly back on level terms with two good points from play. The first came after a brilliant individual run by corner back Seán Ryan (who had a brilliant game the previous evening with our Minors) and the second a minute later (in the 8th minute) with David  O’Sullivan and Greg Horan  placing Danny Carroll who scored.
The home side then began to dominate and all their remaining eight points of the half came from play while our three points came from well taken frees by Darragh O’Brien.
This left the home side with a double score lead at half time (0-10 to 0-5).
When South Kerry scored the only goal of the game two minutes after the resumption it was then a case of damage limitation for us.
We were confined to just three more points during this half – all from play by Danny Carroll, Seán Ryan and Alan Duggan, while the opposition scored a further seven.
Team: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Barry Walsh, Eoghan McKivergan, Joseph O’Kelly, Seán Ryan (0-2), Conor Jordan, Ciarán O’Connell, Greg Horan, Alan Duggan (0-1), David O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Brien (Capt) (0-3 frees), Shane Crowley, Eamon McAllen, Danny Carroll (0-2), Kyle Fitzgibbon.
Subs used: Jack O’Shea (24m), Breandán Caball (ht), James Galvin (ht), Ciarán Flanagan (43m), Dylan Harnett (47m), Colin Griffin (51m).
So now it’s on to the Club Championship, the draw for which is to be made shortly.

MIKEY SHEEHY: It was nice to relive once again the skills and the many brilliant performances of Mikey Sheehy in last Sunday’s Laochra Gael Programme on TG4 – what a difference to the live football we witnessed on RTE TV from 4pm on the same afternoon.

CONTRATULATIONS: also to former Club Hurler, Sean Farrell, now resident in Fossa, Killarney, and his wife Marie (nee O’Sullivan – sister of Nora O’Connor) who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the weekend. Sean was a member of that famous MH team that won the 1955 Co. Championship.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. Phone Ian from 7pm at 066 7126942 for bookings.
