SCÓR: (i) The club needs a 4-man/woman table quiz team for the Kerry county quiz finals of Scór na nÓg (Faoi 17). It will be held on Thursday January 4th (6pm) at the Austin Stack Park Pavilion. The winning team/club will represent Kerry in the All-Ireland. Ring 0876298584, if interested. Have we 4 ambitious young Rockites?

AN RAIBH ‘FHIOS AGAT? Rev. Fr. Thomas Croke, first Patron of the GAA, lived in Tralee (see the plaque on Gerard Hogan’s Shop in The Square) for some years as a child. His parents were William and Isabella (Plumber). They had 8 children….6 boys and 2 girls.
One of the boys, Thomas, became a priest and later became Archbishop of Cashel and Emly and, mar is eol dúinn, patron of our organisation. Two more of the boys also entered the priesthood.
Fr. William Croke was curate in Charleville during the Famine years; he contracted famine fever and died at a very young age. Fr. James Croke went on to become Vicar-General of the Diocese of San Francisco. John, Daniel and David were the other boys. Cad faoi na cailíní?
The two Croke sisters decided to become nuns and entered the Convent in Charleville…Sister Ignatius and Sister Joseph.
They made their mark as nuns of the Mercy Order both at home and abroad during the Crimean War and in Bathurst, Australia. The old Croke homestead in Kilbrin, County Cork, has now been restored. It might be worth a visit some time!
