CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION: Our Lady & St. Brendan’s Parish Corpus Christi Procession took place in glorious sunshine yesterday after the 12.30pm Mass, following the route down towards Rock St., along Connolly Park and concluding with Benediction on the grounds of Austin Stacks GAA Club.

Our thanks to everyone who helped on the day and on the lead-up to the ceremony. Conrgrats again to the Connolly Park Residents who, as usual, had the Park in pristine condition. And thanks again to the St. Brendans Park community for their co-operation in facilitating the Procession to come to the Club in the year of our centenary.

SENIOR HURLING: Austin Stacks 1-10; Abbeydorney 5-15.

After receiving a walk-over from Kenmare in round one and with Ballyheigue, who were to be our opponents in round 2, pulling out of the competition, our Hurlers eventually got their Co. League (Div 2A) campaign off the ground in a wet Connolly Park on last Wednesday evening (14th June).

And the fact that we were without competitive action for the past six weeks certainly had an effect on our performance. We trailed by 1-9 to 0-2 at half time (our opening point coming from Killian O’Riordan after just nine seconds of play, and our second coming from a David Walsh free close to half time).

We then conceded three quick goals in succession straight after the restart. But after that we got to grips with the situation and between then and full time we outscored the opposition by 1-8 to 1-6.

All our points, bar one, came from Michael O’Leary (four frees) with Killian O’Riordan scoring the other one. Our goal, the last score of the game, came when another Michael O’Leary free dropped into the goalmouth and Rory Forbes flicked it to the net.

It was good to see Seán King and Rory  making their season’s debut and also good to see Kenneth O’Sullivan back in a Black & Amber jersey for the first time since July 2009.

Likewise it was good to see Andrew Foley at the game. Andrew had his successful operation last Friday following the recent injury he picked up when playing with the Hurlers.

Team: Paul Daly, Kevin O’Leary, Seán King, Ian Moynihan, Eamon Browne, Eoghan McKivergan, Andrew Morrissey (Capt), Johnny Downey, Kieran McCaughley, David Walsh (0-1 free), Killian O’Riordan (0-2), Rory Forbes (1-0), Jason Conway, Kenneth O’Sullivan, Michael O’Leary (0-7 – four frees).

Subs used: Tadhg Meehan (37m), Terry Desmond (38m).

The remaining two rounds of the Co. League are fixed for the following Wednesdays – R4 away to Kilgarvan (21st June) and R5 at home to Dr. Crokes (28th June).

B FOOTBALL: Tuosist 2-22; Austin Stacks 1-5.

The weather was brilliant and the scenery spectacular but that was as good as it got for both our Senior Football teams when they travelled to the Kenmare District on last Saturday evening (17th June) for round 6 of the Co. League in their respective divisions (our A team were in Templenoe – see separate report next).

Only 13 of our B players travelled to Lauragh (13 a-side is permissible in Div. 5) and we thank each and every one of them for doing so and for playing to the very end against a very good Tuosist side who were playing at full strength.

The home side led at half time by 1-11 to 0-2 (our two points coming from a Danny Carroll free and one from play by Cathal O’Reilly). They scored exactly the same in the second half (1-11) while we scored a further 1-3.

Our contribution came from two Danny Carroll frees and 1-1 from Seamus Bastible (his goal a rasper from a free). And Tuosist’s final tally could have ended up in cricket terms, but for a series of some splendid saves in both halves by Paddy Fitzgibbon.

Micko Horan was making his first appearance in a Rock jersey since June 2004, the previous year he won a Co. Championship medal when the C team won the Barrett Cup. Also making his first appearance in two years was Ciarán Flanagan. Flan’s last Club game was in May 2015, also with the B team.

Jonathan Magnier and Eamon O’Reilly were the Mentors on the evening and Jonathan, as he did in Knocknagoshel recently, got a little more game time when he came on as a blood sub when Danny Carroll picked up a slight injury just before half-time. And Eamon was also togged-out and ready to come on if required.

Team (13 a-side): Paddy Fitzgibbon, Craig Corcoran, No Full Back, Cathal O’Reilly (0-1), Seán Tansley, Andrew Morrissey (Capt), Declan Clifford, William Kirby, Ciaran Flanagan, Micheál Dillon, Seamus Bastible (1-1 goal from a free)), Seán Fitzmaurice. Danny Carroll (0-3 frees), No Full Forward, Micko Horan.

Sub used: Jonathan Magnier (blood sub 27m to ht).

We are due to play Na Gaeil in the opening round of the Town League on this Monday evening (19th June) at 8.15pm. See Website for report. In round 2, on next Monday (26th June), we have a home game against John Mitchels and then on the following Saturday (1st July) it’s back to Co. League duty with a home game against Cordal.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Templenoe 4-10 (22); Austin Stacks 1-16 (19).

The home side got off to an ideal start with a goal inside the 2nd minute. We recovered well from that and by the 11th minute had gone ahead, with four good points in succession from four different players – David Mannix, Alan Duggan, Shane O’Callaghan and Jack O’Shea. Another point from David Mannix and two for the opposition saw the sides level at the end of the first quarter (0-5 to 1-2).

It was still level seven minutes later with both sides scoring two each again – ours coming from Alan Duggan and Jack O’Shea. Then in the 24th minutes Fiachna Mangan put a little bit of daylight between the sides with a well-worked goal. However Templenoe finished the half the stronger with four unanswered points, to leave them one ahead at half time (1-8 to 1-7).

We had a very good start to the second half scoring four unanswered points ourselves to put us three ahead again – our points coming from two David Mannix frees and one each from play by Jack Morgan and Jack O’Shea.

But Templenoe leveled matters again for the seventh time in the game with a 40th minute goal. Poitns from play by Mikey Collins and David Mannix pushed us ahead again only for the home side to come back with their third goal. Points then from Darragh O’Brien and Jack O’Shea edged us ahead again with seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Templenoe, with two more points, were back in the lead again shortly after, and then an injury time goal by them sealed the victory for the home side.

David Mannix, from a free, had the last score of the game which now leaves us second from bottom on the League table after one victory (against Desmonds), one draw (against St. Marys) and three defeats ( against Mitchels, O’Rahillys and now Templenoe) in our five League games played to date.

Fearghal MacNamara and Shane Carroll picked up injuries during the game and we wish them a speedy recovery.

It was good to see Colin Griffin back in action after his serious injury which has side-lined him since May 2016 and also good to see Shane Guthrie back after missing the last five outings as a result of the injury he picked up at the end of April.

Team: David Hennessy, John Murphy Fearghal MacNamara, Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea (0-4),  Jack Morgan (0-1), Shane Carroll, Shane Guthrie, Seán Ryan, Fiachna Mangan (1-0), Alan Duggan (0-2), David Mannix (0-6 – three frees), Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (0-1).

Subs used: Michael Collins (ht) (0-1); Seán Dukes (48m), Colin Griffin (54m, Dale Counihan (55m).

Our thanks to Tim Slattery for providing the information for the above Report,
