RACE NIGHT: Our hardworking Finance Committee is asking us all to join our fellow Rockies for the social event of the year at the Austin Stacks Gala Race Night on Friday week, 26th November!

After nearly two years in hibernation, the great re-emergence of the Rockie faithful will take place in the clubhouse for what promises to be a wonderfully entertaining night of banter, betting and beverages!

Our 2021 Race Night is a hugely important fundraising event for Austin Stacks to help cover the costs of running the largest juvenile boys & girls club in Kerry, to finance pitch maintenance & upgrade works, and to support our Senior Men’s team for what we hope will be a long and prosperous winter campaign!

The Race Night highlights include ten races on multiple screens, special auction and legend races, €1,500 in cash prizes to be won, full bar and finger food and best dressed lady and gent competitions.

SENIOR FOOTBAL: The Co. Championship semi finals go ahead at the weekend. Our game, against St. Brendans in Austin Stack Park, will be on Saturday evening and will be live on RTE TV with a start time of  5.30pm. Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr. Crokes will meet on the following day, also in Austin Stack Park, at 2.30pm.

This will be our 6th Co. Championship meeting with the divisional side. Our 1st meeting was on 23rd August 1936 in a round 3 game, which we won by the narrowest of margins (0-5 to 0-4). We then lost the next three meetings. In 1950 we lost by 2-5 to 1-2.

In 1958 our boys must have stayed in the Greyhound Bar because we lost by 2-7 to no score. Another 48 years elapsed before we met again. In this game in 2006 in Lerrig Brendans had a nine points win (3-11 to 1-8). And the last time we met it was also in Lerrig on 20th June 2009 and we had a twelve points win on that occasion (2-12 to 0-6).

FITNESS CLASSES: The Individual Pod Fitness Training sessions continues in the Clubhouse every Tuesday and Thursday evenings  from 7pm to 8pm. All are welcome. Contact Diane at 087 7940531for further information.

NOVEMBER IN THE PAST (15/11 to 21/11). Many things were happening on the field of play during this week in the past so we have to confine it to a limited random selection of just three in year order. We start in 1975 (16th Nov) when we won our 7th Co. SF Championship defeating Mid Kerry (1-7 to 1-4) after a replay. Team:Teddy Brick, Garry Scollard, John O’Keeffe, Paul Lucey, Fintan Lawlor, Tony O’Keeffe, Ger O’Keeffe, Denny Long, Timmy Sheehan, Ger Power, Mikey Sheehy, Jackie Power, Colm Mangan, Jo Jo Barrett, Tommy Bracker O’Regan.

Then in 2001(18th Nov) our B team won the Molyneaux Cup for the second time in three years – defeating Laune Rangers 2-10 to 0-10 after extra time. Team: Jonathan Conway, Shane Guthrie, Don Shanahan, Eddie Dowling (Capt), Alex Donovan (0-1), Tommy Costello, Conor Carroll, David Leonard, Kieran Donaghy (1-0), Martin Courtney (1-3), Timmy Lynch (0-1), Mark O’Regan, Anthony Morrisson, Seamus Smith (0-2), Anthony Moriarty. Subs: David Conway (0-1), Pádraig Sugrue, Michael Hogan (0-2), Tommy O’Connor.

In 2003 (16th Nov) our C Team won their 2nd Barrett Cup Final in a row and their 4th up to then. The game in Cordal against another Laune Rangers team ended with a five points win (2-6 to 0-7). Team:Darren Carey, Danny Carroll, Gordon Kerins, Alan Tobin, Kenneth Leahy (Capt), Pádraig McCannon, Liam Walsh, Gareth Clifford, Billy Curtin (0-1), David Conway, Michael Hogan (0-2), Joey O’Connor (0-2), Peter Williams (1-0), Gearóid McCann,  Anthony Moriarty (1-1).

Also on the field of play we mention two individual items. In 1991 (17th Nov) Martin McKivergan played his first game with the Kerry Senior Hurlers in a NHL game. And in 2008 (20th Nov) Wayne Guthrie was named the Munster Minor Footballer of the Year.

Finally during this week in 1918 (15th Nov) one of the founding members of the Club the previous year, Christy Barrett, died at the young age of 30 after contracting the 1918 Spanish Flu. Christy was a brother of Joe and Tommy who were outstanding Club and County Footballers later on and to-day Christy’s nephew, Eddie, is still serving the Club as he has done all his life – our current Co. Board delegate (along with Jim Naughton).
