SENIOR FOOTBALL: Ballymac 0-5; Austin Stacks 4-8.

The strong swirling wind did not help for a high-scoring game and that’s how it turned out to be with our lads having eleven wides and the opposition six, shots which, on a normal day, would have sailed over the bar. We opened the scoring in the 4thminute – a well-taken goal by Seán Quilter following good work by Darragh O’Brien. Darragh himself was on target for the next score in the 12th minute. This was followed, two minutes later, by Ballymac’s only score of the first half. Two late points by Conor Horan and Gearóid Fitzgerald left us ahead at the break by 1-3 to 0-1.

Greg Horan was no sooner on the pitch at the start of the second half when he put over a beauty one minute after the resumption. Greg was again involved less than two minutes later when a long ball from his own defence found Fiachna Mangan and Fiachna’s perfect pass found Cian Purcell whose low shot found the corner of the net. The only score of the game from a placed ball came immediately after when Darragh O’Brien was on target.

Ballymac’s second score of the game came in the 35th minute and then we put over three consecutive points by Michael O’Donnell, Darragh O’Brien and Eoghan Carroll, all from play. Ballymac then had two more points in the 50th and 52nd minutes before we sealed the game with two super goals by Gearóid Fitzgerald and Darragh O’Brien in the 55th and 56th minutes with Barry Walsh (who later was awarded the Celsius Mensware Man of the Match), Greg Horan and Sean Quilter very much involved in the build-up. The final score of the game came two minutes later- a point from play for the home side.

It was good to see Cian Dillane making his Senior team debut during the second half.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Barry Walsh, Joey Nagle, Niall Fitzmaurice, Armin Heinrich, Ronan Shanahan, Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (0-1), Barry Shanahan, Conor Horan (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (1-3 – one free), Fiachna Mangan, Seán Quilter (1-0), Gearóid Fitzgerald (1-1), Cian Purcell (1-0).

Subs used: Greg Horan (ht) (0-1), Eoghan Carroll (42m) (0-1), Luke Chester (42m), Dara Barry Walsh (53m), Cian Dillane (53m).

Next in line is our postponed round 8 game against Kerins O’Rahillys which goes ahead in Connolly Park on the coming week-end.

In the meantime all in the Club wish Dylan Casey a speedy and full recovery from his operation last week. It was great to see Dylan at the game in Ballymac.

B FOOTBALL: Keel 3-9 (18); Austin Stacks 1-12 (15).

After two good wins in our two previous rounds we just came up short in this round 9 Co. League game played in Keel on a blustery Saturday evening (11th June). After a slow start (we were six points down after 20 minutes (1-4 to 0-1) we finished the stronger scoring 1-3 to Keels 1-1. This still left us four points in arrears at the interval (2-5 to 1-4).

Keel’s first goal came after just 40 seconds and just over a minute later Conor Myers got us off the mark with a pointed free. Our next three points came from play with Calvin Foley on target twice and a super effort from John Carmody in the 25th minute. Just coming up to half time Conor Myers gave us some hope with a well-taken goal.

Our lads had a very good second half but a third Keel goal, half way through this half, was the difference between the sides in the end. Two points each from play by Gearóid Sheehan and Calvin Foley and one by Jordan Kissane, together with three pointed frees by Donagh McKivergan was our contribution in this second half.

Team: Ben Quilter, Ruairí O’Connell, Paul Barrett, John Murphy, Luke Chester, Shane Walsh, Cian Dillane, Dara Barry Walsh, Eoghan Carroll, Ciarán O’Connell, Gearóid Sheehan (0-2), Jordan Kissane (0-1), John Carmody (0-1), Calvin Foley (0-4), Conor Myers (1-1 – one pointed free).

Subs used:  Shane Carroll (16m), David Burke, Cillian Litchfield and Donagh McKivergan (0-3 frees) (45m); Daniel O’Rourke (53m).

We now have two more games to play, against Ardfert and Beale, and wins in these two games would go a long way to keeping us in division 4 for the coming season.

THE C TEAM: Like our Seniors our C team also have a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys in their final Co. League game on this Friday evening (17th June). Throw-in in Connolly Park is also at 7pm.

WELL DONE: to the Kerry Minors, including our own Colm Browne, Paddy Lane and Michael Tansley, on their win over Tyrone last Saturday. It was great to see Colm back again after missing a few games through injury. Congrats also to the Clare footballers, including our own Conor Jordan, on their brilliant win over Roscommon, with Conor playing a vital role in the closing minutes of that game to clinch that one point victory in a high-scoring game (2-15 to 1-17).

And let us not forget Kieran Donaghy and his success with Armagh. What are the odds now for a Kerry-Armagh final after Monday morning’s draw for the quarter finals?
