The Ballyheigue Beard Festival was launched at the weekend.

THE OFFICIAL launch of the ‘Ballyheigue Beard Festival’ took place in KL Kirby’s Bar in Ballyheigue last Saturday night and the call has gone out for more hairy people to get involved.

All participants in the festival will grow their beards and collect sponsorship for charities until the big ‘shave off’ that is scheduled for November 28.

The festival has currently 15 volunteers taking part in what will be the fourth year of the festival which has so far raised just under €43,000 for different charities since it was set up in 2009.

The funds raised this time will be split between the ‘Kerry Cancer Support Group’, ‘Kerry Cork Health Link Bus’ and the ‘Johnny Roche Road To Recovery Fund’ with the festival actively looking for more volunteers to take part.

The ‘Kerry Cork Health Link Bus’ transports patients to and from hospitals in Cork for their treatment, while the ‘Road to Recovery’ fund was set up to help Ballyheigue native, Johnny Roche, in his recovery after he sustained multiple injuries after a fall in his work in Chicago.

All information for the festival can be found on the ‘Ballyheigue Beard Festival’ Facebook page HERE.
