A LOCAL councillor has called for traffic lights to be installed at a junction in Caherslee.

At the meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Monday, Sinn Fein Cllr Cathal Foley asked that, due to the number of accidents and near misses, the council investigate the feasibility of placing traffic lights at the junction of Lioscarrig and the Caherslee Road.

Cllr Foley said it is very difficult for vehicles to get out onto the main road from the estate. He said it was a similar situation to that of St Brendan’s Park where there are now traffic lights.

In reply, the Council said the junction, along with many others in the town, has been identified in the Tralee Transportation Strategy for future upgrading to a MOVA signalised junction for which the budget estimate is in the region of €200,000.

An assessment of the accident data at the junction shall be undertaken following which its suitability for consideration for Safety Improvement Works Funding can be determined having consideration for other such requirements in the MD.

Cllr Foley said he hoped that the issue would not be “put on the long finger” and would be looked at sooner rather than later. His motion was seconded by Cllr Terry O’Brien.
