A LOCAL councillor says the surface of a laneway in Tralee is dangerous and needs to be looked at urgently.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Johnnie Wall brought up the issue concerning Courthouse Lane at the online meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Monday.

He said the structure of the roadway in Courthouse Lane has failed and is severely rutted causing it to be unsafe and dangerous for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

He proposed that Tralee Municipal Area Operations Section, immediately put to right this situation.

Cllr Wall contends that the concrete sets of the roadway need to be taken up and re-laid on a structurally sound base, ensuring that proper grouting has taken place to stop water seeping through to the under-layer, which is the root of the current problem.

In reply, Council management said Courthouse Lane does not presently form a part of the Tralee MD Municipal District Works Plan.

The provision of a high- quality pavement to this lane is estimated to cost in excess of€200,000 and these works can be considered in the context offuture URDF funding applications.

Cllr Wall strongly advised work to begin on the resurfacing sooner rather than later as people could fall and hurt themselves. He asked to Council to look at it again.

Kerry County Council and Tralee Chamber should push to have that street pedestrianised and the area should be targeted to support cafés, restaurants and artisan businesses.

This are could be the Temple Bar area of Tralee town centre, it’s relatively small size and inherent charm and character makes this an achievable goal if attempted?
