A TRALEE MD councillor has called for something to be created at the site of the old town dump.

Fine Gael Cllr Jim Finucane put forward the motion that the Council plant native Irish trees and create walkways to develop an urban forest on the old dump site off the Dingle Road.

Cllr Finucane said the dump has been closed since the 1980s and nothing has been done with the site over the years. He said the time has come to invest in it.

In reply, Council management said they have consultants engaged to progress the remediation of all historic landfill sites in the County.

The site of the old town dump is located off the Dingle road.

In respect of that Tralee site, the Tier 2/3 risk assessments in accordance with the EPA Code of Practice for Environmental Risk Assessments for Unregulated Waste Disposal Sites have been completed.

The required biodiversity surveys, including a Natural Impact Statement will be finalised in early 2022 and at that stage they will be preparing and submitting the Certificate of Authorisation to the EPA for the proposed remediation of this site.

The proposal as outlined by Cllr  Finucane may be considered as part of any post remediation use for this site provided it would not affect the risk assessments findings and recommendations.
