Cllr Deirdre Ferris.

A LOCAL councillor wants a memorial garden to remember those that went through Tralee’s Industrial schools and Magdalene laundries.

Cllr. Deirdre Ferris made the proposal at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday morning.

She also proposed that this MD supports a project that establishes a Live register of the children and women who went through institutions.

In reply, the Council informed Cllr Ferris that the remaining green spaces at the Island of Geese were identified as ‘Future Development Sites’ and therefore there is no opportunity to facilitate the request as proposed.

However, they plan to progress plans to develop a Garden of Contemplation in Tralee Town Park which will be designed to provide a peaceful setting for contemplation and reflection. Once finalised, a suitable funding source will have to be identified.

Cllr Ferris said that what the Council had planned would not be suitable for the proper acknowledgement of what the survivors of these institutions went through.

Cllr Ferris said it was in no way related to what they experienced and does nothing to give them a voice and recognise what was stolen from them.

Tralee MD Manager, Deirdre said she would take into consideration Cllr Ferris’ request and seek further information before referring back at a later date.
