A LOCAL councillor has called for speed reduction measures on a narrow road popular with walkers.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy asked that the council supports residents at Lohercannon by providing speed reduction measures after complaints of motorists using excessive speed.

In reply, the Council said that following complaints of speeding from locals, Tralee MD undertook a traffic speed survey in April 2022 wherein the average speed of traffic was recorded at 27km/h.

A Speed Limit of 50km/h applies to a significant portion of this road and further to this assessment, it is not proposed to introduce any speed reduction measures, however, signage advising motorists of the likely presence of pedestrians shall be erected consistent with Section 6.17.3 of the Dept. of Transports, Traffic Signs Manual. Signage indicating the likely presence of cyclists is already in place.

Cllr Sheehy said that since the survey was done, a new estate had opened at Lohercannon and there was a larger volume of traffic in the area.

He said the main problem area was the narrow road leading to the Lock Gates. While there were bends on the road to slow down motorists, there were reports of excessive speeding on the long stretch leading into the Lock Gates car park.

He asked that the Council look at the issue again pertaining to that stretch of road. Cllr Sheehy said it is a busy road used by cyclists and walkers to get on to the canal and Cockleshell pathways.
