KERRY County Council buildings will be lit up blue tonight to raise awareness of World Autism Day and the public is invited to snap it with a chance to win prizes.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring, and Lisa Curran of the Irish Autism Mammy facebook page have organised this event tonight to draw attention to autism awareness and acceptance in hope of getting people talking about the issue.

“It is a very important topic to talk about as all we want as an autism community is understanding and acceptance towards our kids, siblings and peers,” said Lisa Curran, whose son Christopher has autism.

“There are so many autism-friendly businesses in Kerry and it’s fantastic already but more awareness is needed. Schools are working hard so that kids understand from a young age that autism is not bad or something to be afraid of and definitely not something to judge another person on,” continued Lisa.

“For autism families it is a tough journey, so to have the town and local businesses willing to get behind supporting such a great and very important cause has been fantastic! It’s not for a charity, it’s simply for the people that deal with autism every day 24/7,” she added.

So tonight over on the Tralee What’s On page on Facebook there is a competition for your best photos in front of the county buildings while they are lit up blue!

All you have to do is post your photo under the post and tag it #autismawarenesstralee.

Local businesses have donated fabulous prizes for the entrants; a blue-themed gift basket from Thats Perfect, an Easter hamper from Garveys Supervalu, and vouchers from La Scala, The Burger Shack, the Aqua Dome and Horans Health Foods are all up for grabs.

So get snapping and support this worthy cause and win yourself a lovely treat in the process for your kindness. You can follow the link here to the post.
