A LOCAL man who has dedicated almost a decade to volunteering with the cancer charity that has supported him through his own cancer journey has been nominated for a national volunteering award.

Dermot Crowley from the Spa was nominated by his colleagues at Recovery Haven Kerry for the annual Volunteer Ireland National Awards and will travel to Dublin this Friday where he is among just three volunteers shortlisted in the Health and Wellbeing category of the national competition.

The nomination comes just weeks after Dermot received the ‘Local Hero’ award at the inaugural Connect Kerry Men of Kerry Awards.

Dermot joined Recovery Haven Kerry – Cancer Support House almost 10 years ago, and in that time, has served in a number of roles, including Treasurer and Board Director, and is now a very active member of both the charity’s Fundraising and Events Committee and Finance and Fundraising Sub Committee.

Recovery Haven’s PR and Marketing officer, Marisa Reidy, said that everyone in the charity is absolutely thrilled for Dermot and wishes him every good wish on Friday night.

“Dermot embodies everything that is good about volunteering and what makes him so special is that he does this so selflessly – insisting that he considers it a privilege to give something back to the charity that supported him through his own cancer journey,” she said.

“A testament to Dermot is the respect in which he is held by everyone at Recovery Haven, as well as the charity’s supporters. In fact, we’ve often said that we don’t quite know what they would do without him – a humbling and fitting tribute to a very special man who means so much to all of us.”

As well as volunteering with Recovery Haven on so many levels, Dermot also gives his time freely to several other local community projects, including his local GAA club in The Spa; The Churchill Forge Heritage Project; Ballymacelligott CE Scheme, and his local church.

This is the second consecutive year that Recovery Haven Kerry will be represented at the Volunteer Ireland National Awards, with their volunteer Noreen O’Flaherty winning the Health and Wellbeing category last year, while the charity’s entire volunteer team took home the ‘Large Group’ accolade at last year’s awards.
