THE ‘Dip In The Nip’ back in September was a roaring success and it was revealed on Tuesday that €11,690 was raised for Recovery Haven Kerry.

The Cancer Support facility at Killerisk joined forces with Fenit-based Wild Water Adventures for the inaugural ‘Dip in The Nip Kerry’ which saw 170 women take a swim in the nude at Derrymore beach on the morning of Sunday, September 19.

Women of all ages took part and paid the €40 registration fee. Manager of Recovery Haven Kerry, Siobhan MacSweeney, was absolutely delighted with how the event went and thanked John and Michaela Edwards of Wild Water Adventures for their help in organising it.

“We had to cap the number of women from a health and safety point of view, but the demand for places in the days leading up to the event was overwhelming,” said Siobhan, who also took part in the dip.

“It was a powerful and empowering experience. It was women together, supporting each other, with laughter, tears and joy. We were all blown away. The sun came out before we went into the water and it started raining just as we finished the event,” she said.

John and Michaela Edwards, who came to the charity with the idea, were also delighted to be involved and looked forward to organising it again next year.

“There’s huge scope to grow the event next year. We were restricted with numbers because of the location, but we can look at that. The feedback afterwards has been so positive,” said John.

The event was open to all women – including those who have experienced cancer themselves, those who are supporting a friend or family member on their cancer journey or those who wanted to remember and honour a loved one who they have lost to the disease.
