A BRAND new course is being rolled out in St Ita’s and St Joseph’s school in honour of former pupil Dylan McCarthy who died tragically in a car accident last year.

The course aims to give students training in painting and decorating and in doing so will need help with funding.

Local businesses have donated most of the materials except for stepladders, overalls and steel toe cap boots.

Boyles in Clash donated €400 towards the equipment and the school has received €1,800 to date from NEKD.

However, they still need to raise 7,300 for the course.

“Dylan McCarthy had a great presence. He never went anywhere without a smile and his smile was as big as his heart. He was a bright individual in every way, you could not help but be drawn in by his charm and enthusiasm for life,” said Grace Sheehan, principal of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s.

“Our focus will be to train students in areas which will potentially lead to employment. Also the pupils will be able to utilise their learned skills to benefit their school and local community,” she said.

“Our research indicates that there is a gap in the current training provision for learners with disabilities, This City and Guilds Programme is an accredited qualification whereby the participants will learn new skills which should enhance their opportunities for further education and or employment,” said Ms Sheehan.
