KERRY Fire Service has attended and contained a fire which occurred overnight in Killarney National Park, but is asking members of the public to stay away from the southern side of Torc Mountain until further notice.

The fire was reported to the Fire Services at 10pm and two units from Killarney and Killorglin attended the fire overnight. The fire was brought largely under control by 6am.

However Fire Service has advised of a risk of hotspots and re-ignition and is asking for the cooperation of the public in avoiding the southern side of Torc Mountain area until further notice.

Access to Torc Waterfall and the so-called Cardiac Hill/Steps – which had been closed off to the public earlier – has now been restored.

The situation is being closely monitored in conjunction with staff from the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Further updates will be provided through the media and on Kerry County Council’s social media platforms.
