GARDAI are calling for the public to be vigilant after people purporting to be collecting cash for a suicide awareness charity, had their monies confiscated by gardaí in Killorglin on Friday.

There were reports last week of persons claiming to be from Suicide Aware collecting money in Tralee and Newcastlewest under false pretences.

Vigilant members of the public contacted the charity, who said there were no such people authorised to collect on their behalf.

At the KFest arts festival  in Killorglin on Friday, acting on a report from a member of the public, Gardaí approached people claiming to be from Suicide Aware collecting on the streets. They confiscated the monies in their possession and their identifications.

All monies seized will be forwarded to Suicide Aware.

The matter is currently under investigation as Gardaí attempt to verify the identification in possession of the collectors, with the charity.

Gardaí say members of the public should always check the credentials of people before handing over any money. If in doubt, people should contact the organisation they claim to be collecting for, to confirm their identification, or contact their local garda station.
