GLAN Tralee To Host Series Of Tralee Climate Action Talks and Workshops

Donal Hunt, Mike O’Neill and Tara Shine will be speakers at GLAN Tralee talks over the next month.

GLAN Tralee in association with Siamsa Tire, Transition Kerry,  Kerry County Council, Tralee Chamber Alliance, IT Tralee, Clean Coasts and the Imperial Hotel will host a series of talks on October 23 and  November 22 to demonstrate how small changes in our own behaviour will make a big difference to our future.

The recent UN International Panel on Climate Change report is a worrying assessment of how our planet is affected by climate change.

OPW Flood Mapping for mid-range future scenarios shows us that Kerry will certainly feel the effects of sea level rise. According to the UN IPCC, climate action must happen now to avoid catastrophic impacts.

On next Tuesday, October 23, from 6-7pm at the Imperial Hotel, Donal Hunt (Estates Manager for the IT Tralee  and Energy Champion / Officer; winner of an SEAI National Award for ” Excellence in Coordinated Energy Management” at IT Tralee) will present a case study on controlling energy usage and reducing costs at IT Tralee.

Donal was previously nominated for SEAI Energy Manager of the year and the works and practices implemented by Donal and his team at IT Tralee are saving the IT Tralee €170k per annum on energy and other resources.

Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-operative will attend and discuss tips, tax incentives and grants available (free event).

Next month, on November 22, three different events will take place.

Mike O’Neill, (café owner, founder of the Wild Mind Nature Festival and Chair of Fenit Development Association) will make a presentation at 11am at the Imperial Hotel on his transition to a plastic free business (free event).

At 1pm at Siamsa Tire, Angela Nagle will talk about her family’s experience when they cut out plastic for a month and she will discuss her top tips for shopping and living plastic-free (free event – supported by Kerry County Council).

Finally, Dr Tara Shine, acclaimed environmental scientist and climate change activist, will visit Siamsa Tire at 7pm.

She will set out the case for climate action and how we can all play a role in safeguarding our children’s future.

She states ‘Either we get paralysed by this reality or we get motivated by it.’ This talk is being presented in association with Transition Kerry and Glan Tralee.

Dr Tara Shine is an environmental scientist with over 20 years’ experience working at the international level on climate change and sustainable development.

She is a freelance consultant and adviser, co-founder of Plastic Free Kinsale, Director of Change by Degrees and a TV presenter. Tickets for this event are €8.
