The Forge Cross roundabout was one of the areas that came in for praise from the judges.

AN Taisce has commended all those involved in the local Tidy Towns group fo their efforts to bring Tralee back to ‘Clean To European Norms’ in the latest Irish Business Against Litter League results.

Tralee came 21st out of the 40 cities and towns surveyed, an improvement on the last survey in June of 2022.

The An Taisce report noted a big improvemeat Market Street – this time around it was very much deserving of the top litter grade.

Other top-ranking sites include Manor Retail and Leisure Park, Brewery Road and The Mall. Though still somewhat littered, Tralee Train Station was much improved compared to a previous IBAL survey. By far the most heavily littered site surveyed was Daly’s Lane.

Here’s the report and what they said about particular areas in town…

R875 Rathass Approach Road: Grade B+. (from McDonald’s to entrance with Hospital) The overall impression was generally a good one but there were too many random food related items along the entire stretch. The shrubs / trees were beautiful. The area closest to the hospital was spotless. Litter became more obvious further out of town. The area around Jo Fitz Motors presents poorly with cars parked on the footpath / muck and dirt next to the entrance.

Manor Retail and Leisure Park: Grade A. An exceptionally freshly presented and maintained retail park environment with all aspects in very good condition e.g. paving, bollards, planting etc. The planter boxes in front of ‘The Bookshelf’ looked very well. Apart from some old chewing gum, there was a complete absence of litter throughout the area surveyed.

Forge Cross Roundabout: Grade A. There was a virtual absence of litter at the roundabout, just a few occasional food related items. Roadworks continue but they haven’t impacted on the litter situation.

The Mall: Grade A. The Mall was an excellent site in terms of overall presentation and litter. Attractive paving, stainless steel bollards, wooden planter boxes (with cigarette butt units attached and ‘Keep Tralee Clean’ signage) etc. Individual shopfronts were well presented. Overall, The Mall was very much deserving of the top litter grade.

Market Street: Grade A. A much-improved site and this time around it was very much deserving of the top litter grade. The paving pattern was so much more obvious once there was an absence of litter.

Brewery Road: Grade A. The overall impression created along this road was a positive one with a virtual absence of litter throughout. The road surface / markings / signage were freshly presented.

Tralee Train Station: Grade B. There was a notable improvement at Tralee Train Station. Much of the station was very good with regards to litter. The area adjacent to the Kiosk and at the base of the low-lying shrubbery was littered, mostly food related, along with some cigarette butts. There wasn’t any visible litter in the area associated with the construction / building works.

Daly’s Lane: Grade C+. The freshly presented road / car parking surface wasn’t enough to ‘lift’ this site. As well as pockets of litter here and there, there was a definite accumulation in a corner site, (very close to the ‘These Premises are Monitored by CCTV – No Dumping Allowed’ signage) and beneath the signage for Whitehouse accommodation, at the base of the rusty gate. Such areas will only attract further litter if not addressed.

Pairc an Pairsaigh: Grade B+. A lovely park environment which just missed the top litter grade – alcohol related litter brought down the grade. Not much effort is required to get the top litter grade. Attractive planter boxes included a ‘Garden of Contemplation’. Seating, paving, planting etc were in very good condition.

N86 Castlemaine Approach Road: Grade B. The area around Lidl and the small park was spotless. It was the litter near the service station (Inver), mostly food related items, along with some dog fouling and cigarette butts which brought down the litter grade. There was also a litter presence near the residential area of Cois Abhainn.
