Seniors: We made the short journey to Mitchels on Sat night last 1st July. It was Mitchels who took the valuable County League points on offer with a final scoreline of 4-07 to 1-14.
We played against a stiff breeze in the first half but opened brightly with 4 points from Tommy Walsh, operating at mid-field, pointing 3 frees and 1 from play go leave us ahead 0-4 to nil after 9 minutes.
On the 10th minute Cian Sayers goaled following good approach work by Tommy and Ryan Carroll to leave us 7 to the good.
Mitchels settled and had their first score from Alan O’Donoghue followed by a James Duggan free and on the 14th minute Alan O’Donoghue had their first score from play to leave us ahead 1-04 to 0-03.
A sweeping move from defence saw us lose possession and with Mitchels quickly transferring the ball to their inside forward line they found the net to leave the minimum between the sides.
Gearoid Savage then increased our lead to 2 but we were pegged back again with Alan O’Donoghue pointed from another free. Worst was to follow 6 minutes from half-time when the ball broke kindly for Mitchels and though they scored a point the referee called play back and awarded them a penalty which was duly converted by James Duggan.
Shane O’Connor added a further point for the Boherbue side on the 27th minute which left the half time score at 2-05 to 1-05.
On the resumption we made the running and with Tommy in fine form he found his range with 2 quick-fire point and when Tom Hoare had another point we were back level to 1-08 to 2-05.
Mitchels again put 1 between us but Tommy quickly followed up with a point from play and a free to leave us ahead by 1 after 12 minutes.
Disaster struck when a defensive lapse allowed Mitchels in on goal for their third major of the night to put them ahead by 2.
Padraig Griffin from play and Gearoid Savage from a free had us level but we were dealt a major blow when Tommy Walsh had to leave the field with an injury. This in the 16th minute.
A pointed free from James Duggan left us trailing by the minimum again but he quickly saw red for an off-the-ball incident involving Darragh McElligott so we had an extra man for the remaining 10 minutes.
Points from Ryan Carroll and Gearoid Savage had us 1 ahead approaching the 30th minute and one felt we had done enough to take home the points.
However, a failed attempt from a free, which came back off the upright and was gathered by an in-rushing Mitchels forward resulted in a dubious penalty award which was converted to leave us behind by 2 4-07 to 1-14.
Despite another 3 minutes of injury time we failed to narrow the gap and disappointingly left Ballyseedy empty handed.
The loss of Tommy at the 3/4 stage was a huge blow as he had at that stage contributed 8 points of our total (4 from frees) and it was probably the deciding factor in the game.
We next play Castleisland Desmonds in R8 of the County League on Saturday night 15th July in Strand Road.
U-21s: We made our exit from the county U-21 championship on Weds night last ( 28th June) when Dr Crokes just edged us out on a final score line of 2-15 to 1-15 in a quarter final encounter played in Lewis Road, Killarney.
The lads gave it their all despite being short key players (currently in the US) and can have no regrets on a fine performance.
Minors: Shannon Rangers were our opponents in a preliminary round game in the county championship played last Thursday night in Tarbert. We started very well and were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes our scores coming from Shane McElligott ( 2) and Darragh Fitzgerald 3 points from placed balls.
Shannon Rangers got more into the game as the half wore on but we were still ahead at the break on a score line of 0-08 to 1-03, their goal being a fortuitous effort which deceived the keeper to keep them in the game. On the change over we dominated proceedings with our defence not conceding any ground ably marshalled by full back Aidan Mangan with great support from Deaglan Crowe and captain Rory O’Connor.
Further scores from Shane McElligott, Aaron Roche and Gearoid Dillane pushed us to 0-12 to 1-04 in front approaching the quarter hour; a flowing move from defence ended with Jordan Foley finding Rory O’Connor up in the attack and Rory made no mistake when finding the back of the net to leave us in the ascendancy by 7 points.
Shannon Rangers fought back and another goal followed by a point left us nervy for the last few minutes but we battled on and ran out worthy winners on a final score line of 1-15 to 2-08.
This was a game display by all players with Jordan Foley probably being our stand out performer on the night. We now play Laune Rangers in the first round next Tuesday night 4th July in Strand Rd where throw in is timed for 19.30 Well done to the team and management.
Munster Finals: Kerry made it a double on the day and a clean sweep of all Munster titles this year when our Minors easily accounted for Clare in the decider and our Seniors were equally impressive when dismissing Cork on a final score line of 1-23 to 0-15.
Congrats to David Moran and Barry John Keane on winning further Munster Senior medals. We wish Jack Savage a speedy recovery as he would most likely have featured in the final.
Junior Blues: Due to the Munster Finals there was no Academy on Sunday 2nd July but action will resume next Sunday 9th July 2017 at 11am.
Our u-14 boys had a fruitless trip to Glenbeigh last Monday night (26th June) when losing our narrowly to the Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane combination on a final score line of 1-15 to 2-09. Their next game is this Monday July 3rd when they travel to play Churchill in the R2 of the Central League.
Congratulations to Darragh O’Connor who played at half time in the Munster Senior finals for Kerry in the Primary School Games and helped himself to 1-01 on the day.
Lotto: There was no winner of last week’s draw where the winning numbers drawn were: 7, 15, 16 & 29. Nora O’Sullivan matched 3 numbers and wins €25. The five entrants for the December draw are as follows: Luke O’Callaghan, Billy Hobbert, Tommy Horan, Madeline Foley and Cora Walsh. Next week’s jackpot will now be €8,200. We would like to thank those who continue to support this important fund raiser.
