Seniors:
Round 3 of the Coiste Trá Lí league saw us in Connolly Park for a 12.30 start against local rivals Austin Stacks.

The winter like conditions from the off,  with wind and driving snow showers militated against good football but with the elements at their backs Stacks took control early and fired over some good scores despite the best efforts of an overworked defence where Danny O’Sullivan, David Murphy and Ryan Carroll were to the fore.

It was Ryan Carroll who had us first on the scoreboard when knocking over a good score in the 6th minute but by the 25th minute this was to be our only score with Stacks notching 6 points in that time.

However, some improved play from the back with Shane Brosnan prominent, aided in no small part by Karl Mullins saw us kick two fine scores from the returning John Ferguson to leave the score 0-06 to 0-03 on the 30th minute. Two additional minutes of injury time saw Stacks hit us for two further minors and left them in the ascendancy at the break, 0-08 to 0-03.

The expected fight back on the resumption did not materialise, as it was the home side who tacked on the first 3 scores to push them 8 points to the good after 10 minutes.

A triple substitution on 40 minutes saw Shane McElligott, Seán Collins and Donagh O’Brien enter the fray and they all made an impact, getting on ball and putting pressure on the opposition; a flurry of scores and snow (!) followed, with Rory Molloy, Gazza , Seán Collins & John Ferguson finding their range to leave just four points in it, 0-11 to 0-07 with 5 minutes remaining.

Then a mix up in midfield handed the initiative to Stacks and they lifted the siege to push ahead by 5; worse was to follow as the kick out was snapped up by the opposition and though Gary Kissane parried the initial effort, Stacks were not to be denied and they  found the net from the rebound.

It was left to John Ferguson to wrap up matters when he kicked points from play and a free to leave final score line, Austin Stacks 1-12, Kerins O’Rahillys 0-09.

On a day when few players shone it is worth mentioning the contributions of Danny O’Sullivan, Ryan ” Chucky” Carroll and the returning John Ferguson who all carried the fight to our neighbours.

The game was excellently refereed by Ian Liston of Finuge who was up with the play throughout and applied the rules diligently.

The next game in this competition takes place on Friday night next, 16th Feb when we play Na Gaeil, under lights in John Mitchels complex with a 9 pm start time.

Strictly Club Dancing:
Anybody fortunate enough to have witnessed last year’s inaugural “Strictly” will not want to miss out on this year’s event which is scheduled to take place on Friday 16th March in the Brandon Hotel commencing at 8 pm.

At a press release last week, chairman Haulie Kerins outlined the plans for this year’s spectacular, and while it’s the club’s main fund raiser of the year, the  central thrust of the night is one of celebration and fun, centred around the community and their coming together.

The dancers are currently being put through their paces by Strand Road woman, Jackie O’Mahony and she has promised another breathtaking event with some surprises on the night. In addition to the funds raised, two charities chosen by the popular and judges winners will benefit from the occasion.

The club would also like to thank Nathan McDonnell of Ballyseedy Garden Centre and (now also with a location at the Wetlands) for his support as show sponsor which is a significant bonus for the club. So, mark the date in your diaries – Friday 16th March – it promises to be a great night!
