Junior Co League Group 1 Strand Road 1-10 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-07

This game was played in conditions more fitting to an October evening. Both sides were missing players so were slow off the mark. Strand Road were the stronger side in the first half with some fine scores from Mark O’Sullivan, Alan Sheehy Cunningham, Ronan Quill, Seán Walsh, Kevin Walshe and a goal from Shane O’Sullivan. Milltown/Castlemaine had only scored 2 points up to the dying minutes of the half when they got an opportune goal to leave the half time score Strand Road 1-06 to Milltown/Castlemaine 1-02. Strand Roadstarted the second half with a point from Ronan Quill but Milltown/Castlemaine tagged on a couple of points and netted another goal to equalise 15 minutes into the half so it was all to play for at this stage. A dubious decision saw Shane O’Sullivan black carded and replaced by Jack Shortt but points by Strand Roads Mark O’Sullivan, Cian Sayers and John C O’Connor put us a point ahead with just minutes to go. It wasn’t to be though as Milltown/Castlemaine got one last chance and pointed to equalise. The full time score was Strand Road 1-10 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-07. Players to impress on the night were Kevin Walshe who covered the field from end to end, Robert O’Connor who pulled off a great save that kept us in the game and Mark O’Sullivan who scored a very impressive 45 in very poor conditions and a point from play. Strand Road have now qualified for the Group 1 Semifinal. This will be played in Healy Park on Friday evening next the 17th at7.30pm. Strand Road’s opponents are Legion.
