Seniors: We travelled to Glenbeigh on Sat night last to take on the locals in Round 3 of the county league with a first league win the priority after our opening day loss and subsequent draw.

The loss of the US bound Kieran O’Mahony plus the injuries to Con Barrett and Ross O’Callaghan left us fielding a largely inexperienced side with 6 of our county U-21 winning side making a start plus Darragh McElligott and Tom Hoare from last year’s minor team.

We had the aid of the elements in the first half and had two points on the board within as many minutes courtesy of Gazza Savage and Gavin O’Brien who raced through from midfield and was unlucky not to goal, his rising shot flying over the crossbar.

Glenbeigh responded quickly and were 0-4 to 0-3 in front when the put together a sweeping move which led to a goal – they maintained this lead for much of the first period but 10 minutes from half time two pointed frees from Tommy Walsh put us within 2 points and this was the margin at the short whistle, 1 -09 to 0-10; John Ferguson was coming into his own in this period and was responsible for 3 of our 10 points, all from play. Both defences struggled in this half, reflected in the high scoring.

On the resumption, facing into the stiff wind, we were now employing Cian Sayers in a sweeper role in an effort to curb the ball into the inside line – over the next 30 minutes this move worked a treat and GG were restricted to 4 points in total in the second half.

The turning point came in the 10th minute when Gazza rounded his marker and just as he was about to shoot was dragged down in the square – the ref pointed to the penalty spot but strangely produced a yellow card when black for a deliberate pull down was the correct sanction.

Karl Mullins took the kick and send a low drive to the corner of the net and we were in front by the minimum; for the next 10/12 mins we completely dominated possession all over the pitch with driving runs from Shane Brosnan, Danny O’Sullivan and Karl Mullins and with our shooters on form we tacked on an additional 5 points without reply through John Ferguson (2), Rory Molloy (2) and Tom Hoare belying his inexperience by fisting over the bar when he might have been tempted to go for goal; all this time Tommy Walsh was often the provider and as we have come to expect was often fouled but not often rewarded!

GG put in a strong finish but we held firm and in a final onslaught, we produced a lovely succession of hand passes to leave substitute Diarmuid O’Sullivan with an easy shot at goal which he duly converted.

This was game over on a final score line of 2-16 to 1-13. Praise is due to all for the heart, commitment and passion we saw all over the pitch and should stand us in good stead with our preparations for the club championship vs Kenmare.
