Senior Club Championship Rd 1

Kerins O Rahillys 0-23  Dr Crokes 1-16

The opening round of this years Senior Club Football Championship brought us to Castleisland on Sunday to face Dr Crokes.

A haul of twelve points from Jack Savage inspired Kerins O’Rahilly’s to a four-point victory over a Dr Crokes outfit that had Tony Brosnan in equally influential form as he struck for a goal and nine points in the glorious sunshine at Castleisland Desmonds pitch.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s raced into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after five minutes with Jack Savage contributing all four (three frees from fouls on Gavin O Brien (2) and David Moran) while Brian Looney had Crokes sole reply.

The loss of regular net minder , Shane Murphy, was proving costly as the Killarney side were in trouble with their kick-outs, especially in the opening half.

Even at this early stage in was obvious that it was going to be an end-to-end classic and in the eighth minute Tony Brosnan weaved his way through for a superb goal for Crokes.

Brosnan and Tom Hoare traded scores but then Strand Road struck for three points on the bounce from Tom Hoare, Gavin O’Brien and Jack Savage(2 frees) before Tony Brosnan replied from a mark for the Crokes. With sixteen minutes gone Kerins O’Rahilly’s led by 0-8 to 1-3, of this frantic battle.

Strand Road added four more points before the half time break with Gavin O’Brien’s solo score in the 31st minute the pick of the bunch, coming from a long Shane Foley restart, O’Brien fetched and cut through the Crokes defence to kick a fine point, whilst Dr Crokes, with Mark O’Shea and David Shaw becoming more influential around the middle, added three from Cillian O’Regan, and two from Brosnan as the Tralee side led 0-12 to 1-6 at the interval.

Dr Crokes started the second half with a flourish and had two on the bounce from Burns and Brosnan (free), before Savage and Brosnan, from a placed ball, once more swapped scores.

By the 39th minute Dr Crokes were just a single point behind, 1-10 to 0-14, but Strand Road got a bit of a run on their opponents with Jack Savage and his brother Gearóid kicking some fine points but Crokes, thanks to Tony Brosnan free, and a Micheal Burns special, brought them back to within two points with nine left to play.

But Kerins O’Rahilly’s with the outstanding Cormac Coffey hitting three on the trot was enough to see the blues  over the line much to the delight of their large following. On the day we were deserved winners in what was an very good team display.

The standout performers on the day were Jack Savage who kicked some outstanding scores throughout, Gavin O’Brien who was a dominant figure around the middle , kicking two scores and being fouled for a number of our scores, Cormac Coffey was constantly driving us forward and his three second half points were of the highest quality.

David Moran and Sean Walsh worked tirelessly at midfield, while inside Tommy Walsh was a huge presence on the edge of the square and also won vital kickouts late on when brought out.

Gearoid Savage had his best outing to date and kicked some vital scores. The victory sets us up nicely for next Sundays mouthwatering clash with Austin Stacks .

Scorers for Kerins O’Rahilly’s: J Savage (0-12, 10 frees), G Savage (0-4), C Coffey (0-3), G O’Brien (0-2), T Hoare and T Walsh (0-1 each).

NORTH KERRY LADIES BLITZ
On behalf of everyone in Strand Road we would like to thank everyone involved in North Kerry Ladies for organising  this excellently run fun blitz especially Frank McLoughlin and James Hayes.

It was a busy Saturday in Ballyrickard for many future stars who were so excited about participating. We saw plenty of colours on display from all 12 teams involved.

Covid 19 had other ideas as we all know over the past few years so last Saturday was extra special. Many coaches from the various clubs met up once again for this fantastic morning of fun games for the girls in North Kerry.

Community spirit was alive also as all proceeds from the day were donated to Breast Cancer Ireland. The bubbly Mary Gardiner was there encouraging and supporting each team . It was obvious that each and every girl  had a great passion for their football . Each young lady was presented with a gorgeous medal with a pink ribbon which they wore around their necks straight away with pride.

It’s days out like these that are remembered and encourage a continuation of this love for football.

The spectators were treated to a fantastic morning of football. The teams showed off their skills with many runs, lots of solos and terrific marking and tackling. Great resolve and tenacity  shown throughout!

A blitz promotes team work and is a great way for girls to participate in Gaelic football, whatever the skill level. Well done!
