badmintonThe wind roared and the rain poured all over Kerry on Sunday last but that did not deter well over one hundred hardy souls from Iveragh to Tarbert who plied their Badminton trade at the Newtownsandes sponsored 30th annual Moyvane Badminton Tournaments played in the local Community Centre on Sunday last.
What a feast of Badminton it proved to be with the divisions 2, 4 and 5 mixed finals having to go to the third set for decision.
Results as follows;
Division 5;
Mike Corridan’s Garage Shield; Mixed doubles final; Jennifer Murphy (Listowel) and Colm Carroll (Ballyheigue) defeated Sue Weatherill (Iveragh) and Oliver Carmody (Moyvane) 12-21; 21-16; 21-14.
Ladies Plate division 5 Final; Mary Flahive (Annascaul) and Sheern O’Neill (Iveragh) defeated Suzie Rice (County, Tralee) and Amina Bhayat (Listowel ) 30-15
Mens Plate division 5 Final; Jamie Vaughan (Moyvane) and James O’Mahony (Causeway) defeated defeated James O’Connell (Listowel) and Maslow Jesho (Moyvane) 30-19
Division 4
Eileen and Tom Roche Trophy; Mixed doubles Final; Paula O’Sullivan (Ballyheigue ) and Jamie Elliott (Moyvane) defeated Denise Collins (Moyvane) and Sean Bradley (Iveragh) 21-15; 15-21; 21-14
Ladies Division 4 Plate Final; Mary Bradley (Kingdom, Castleisland) and Linda Burke ((Ballyheigue) defeated Michelle Corridan (Moyvane) and Marie O’Connor (Killarney) 30-23
Mens Division 4 Plate Final; Tom Rice (County) and Anthony Barrett (Listowel) defeated Navroop Johnston (Killarney) and James Sheahan (Listowel) 30-19
Division 3
Brosnans Bar Shield; Mixed doubles Final; Carmel Hudson (Moyvane ) and Kieron Crehan (Killarney) defeated Sandra O’Connor (Killarney ) and James Sheehan (Moyvane) 21-18; 23-21
Division 2
Mail Road Garden Centre Trophy; Catherine Murphy ( Castleisland) and James Leane (Listowel) defeated Brid Murphy (Castleisland) and Donnacha Moloney (Moyvane)
12-21; 21-14; 21-16
The Badminton programme for Sunday next , Dec.6th,is one of the big days on the Kerry Badminton calendar which will see players from all 5 divisions converge in the Killarney Sports Centre to compete in the 4 separate tournaments to be played on the day. These tournaments go back a long way in the history of Kerry Badminton and all players from Division 1 to division 5 will endeavour to be at their best in an effort to get their names on to these prestigious trophies.
The programme and times as follows;
Paddy Drummond Cup; Divisions 1 and 2; 2 pm
Waterstone Cup; Division 3; 3.30 pm
Mixed Doubles Shield; Division 4; 4 pm
Mixed Doubles Shield; Division 5 2 pm.
All players are requested to note the times of their own competition and to check in at the desk in good time.
Shuttle Time Coaching Course;
Badminton Ireland coaching comes to Kerry with their Shuttle Time Coaching Course on Monday January 18th, with the venue being the Presentation School, Milltown.
For individuals, but more especially for schools and their P.E. teachers, this is an ideal course to take part in. Indeed, for schools who register with Badminton Ireland their is a free starter pack which includes Badminton racquets and net.
