A LOCAL Fianna Fáil County Councillor has called for the Government to allow ‘Wet Pubs’ to re-open.

Councillor Michael Cahill has said the restrictions on the opening of public houses should now be lifted, under confined conditions.

“These restrictions were the correct line to take at the time but I am now convinced that, under strict guidance, businesses serving alcohol but not food, should be allowed to operate again,” said Councillor Cahill.

“We are now at a juncture where house gatherings are taking place in the absence of the local pub. These are unsupervised and very difficult to police. Now, I believe, if we re-open our Public Houses with social distancing and strict hand washing procedures in place, we can take back control and regulate our social events,” he said.

“Our local pub can be a safe place to socialise and will be a big improvement on the unsupervised gatherings we have been seeing of late. A total ban on alcohol consumption in public places can be enforced by our Gardaí and the return to regulated, safe socialising will be welcomed by all,” added Councillor Cahill.
