Kerry Man Dedicates International Award To Irish Women Whose Lives Were Destroyed By Catholic Church

Producer Conor Keane and RTE Radio 1 Documentary On One series producer, Liam O’Brien, at the awards in Barcelona.

A KERRY man was in Barcelona this week to collect the top prize at the 65th Premios Ondas Awards were presented in Barcelona, and he dedicated the award to Irish women who suffered at the hands of the Catholic Church.

The RTÉ Radio 1 Documentary On One production ‘In Shame, Love, In Shame’, was produced by Listowel man Conor Keane and won 1st prize in the International Radio Award (across all genres of radio). The documentary told the story of Peggy and Breda McCarthy from Finuge.

For more than six decades the Premios Ondas, Spain’s most long-standing and prestigious radio and television awards, has attracted entries from across the world. This year, more than 300 entries competed across radio, TV and music.

Receiving the award in front of 2,500 people in the  Barcelona’s  Gran Teatre del Liceu,  packed to capacity with over 2,500 guests and aired live on Spanish television, producer Conor Keane said:  “We want to dedicate this award to all those women whose lives were destroyed by the inexplicable actions of the Irish Catholic church, and the inexcusable failure of the Irish State to protect the most vulnerable.”

The winning documentary, was produced by Conor Keane and Liam O’Brien, Series Producer of the Documentary On One and Conor Keane narrated.

The Premios Ondas jury cited that “they set great store by the strength of a story which tells of major injustices suffered by the same Irish family over three generations at the hands of the church in a small community in the south west of Ireland.”
