The busy roundabout on the Killerisk Road. Residents have been looking for a pedestrian crossing to be installed in the area for a while now.

COUNCILLORS from the Tralee area are to use their Councillors Allocation to fund a new pedestrian crossing on the Killerisk Road.

The issue has been brought up a number of times over the past couple of years and Cllr Norma Foley (FF) again raised it at this month’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday.

She asked that the issue be addressed as a matter of urgency as there were fears for the safety of residents in a highly populated area.

In reply, Council Management said there was no funding available to cover the €20,000 costs involved.

Cllr Foley said she had consulted with her fellow councillors who agreed to contribute €2,200 each from their Councillors’ Allocation to cover the costs.

The project will now go to public consultation in the coming months with the crossing expected to be constructed in early 2016.

“This is the most positive news story to come out here today, it’s good news for the people of the Killerisk area,” said Cllr Foley.

While the exact location of the crossing is yet to be confirmed, it is likely to be located in the vicinity of the entrance to Manor West Retail Park.
