THERE was a steady stream of visitors to the Brandon Hotel on Saturday for the second annual Discover Islam open day.
Organised by the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society, the event had a number of stands detailing what Islam is all about and telling of the Society’s work in the community.
“It’s a continuation of last year’s event and our mission is primarily the same: to promote integration, to clear up misconceptions about Islam and to break down barriers,” said Dr Khan, Chairperson of the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society.
“People usually only see Muslims in their place of work, be it in the hospitals or businesses, so the aim of the Society is to start integrating in the community and to tell people about Islam because otherwise they might get misinformation from elsewhere,” he said.
The Society has got involved with the Tidy Towns campaign, the Red Cross and Enable Ireland since it was founded in 2013.
“Primarily we are a community as one. The people of Tralee deserve better and we should all work together for special needs services, better roads etc so that’s why we align ourselves with the Tidy Towns and other organisations which work towards making Tralee look better and improving the town,” said Dr Khan, who works in Kerry General Hospital.
There was also face-painting for children, henna tattoos and gift bags for all who attended the open day.
