TWO entries from north Kerry schools have made it to the national finals of the ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ in which just 12 finalists were chosen from 1,000 entrants.

Third and sixth class students Shane Browne, Neave Tugwell and Katelyn Curtin from Loughfouder NS in Knocknagoshel will be there as one half of Kerry’s representatives.

Just over the road from them, Hannah Murphy, Ellie Shanahan and David Roche of Lyreacrompane N.S make up the rest of the Kerry contingent at the awards which take place in Dublin Castle on June 16.

At the national final awards ceremony, the Loughfouder NS pupils will exhibit their project, ‘Caring for Our World Achieves Nearly All the MDGs’, and the Lyreacrompane N.S. pupils will exhibit their project, ‘Water – Take Your Share, That’s Fair’.

The awards are now in their tenth year and are designed to help children in Ireland understand global issues, and Ireland’s role in working to meet the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals focus on fighting hunger and poverty and improving the lives of those in the world’s poorest countries.

At this ceremony, all twelve finalist schools will receive a trophy and the overall ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ trophy will then be awarded to one outstanding project.

All entries were assessed on their creativity, understanding of the theme and their impact. 60 projects that illustrated strengths across these three areas received an ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ plaque at the regional awards ceremonies in May, and 12 of the top entries won a place at the final awards ceremony in June.
