Orlagh new profile 1ANIMALS are something that have always been a huge part of my life, in fact it is safe to say that there have been times that I preferred the company of animals to humans.

My two cats are my babies and I cannot imagine ever harming them. Over the weekend, readers of TraleeToday.ie would have seen the pictures of the cat that was painted over on the side of the road. I am hoping that the person responsible was unaware what had happened and did not do it on purpose.

Deliberate animal cruelty really does break my heart. There have been thousands of videos posted online in recent years and the sad fact is that they seem to be getting more sickening.

Innocent puppies and kittens set alight are some of the most horrific videos that I have seen. What the hell has happened to humanity?

What kind of person gets kicks out of seeing a defenceless animal suffer? You really have to worry about society when you hear of the stomach churning abuse that is inflicted on animals.

Puppy farms are a relatively new phenomenon and they are currently in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Three hundred and forty dogs and eleven horses were rescued over a nine-day period and three people have been arrested as a result of the combined rescue by An Gardai, ISPCA and Carlow County Council.

I really do hope that these people, if they are found guilty, will get stiff sentences when they come before our courts.

It really does make you think about where you buy your pet. Avoid buying a pet on websites, visit the seller and see the conditions for yourself.

There are so many animal rescue homes that are full to capacity with so many wonderful animals that would make great pets. Unwanted, abandoned and unfortunately a lot of the time abused, there are thousands throughout the country.

Buying a pet for Christmas is never a good idea so avoid it at all costs. Always consider the care that a pet will require, not just vet bills but the constant love and attention needed to ensure a happy pet.

Locking a dog indoors or in a confined place all day while you are at work will never be a success. Treat your pet like you would your child, lavish love and attention and you receive it back ten fold.

A pet will love you unconditionally and can be a huge source of companionship and hours of fun.

If you do suspect that an animal is being treated badly, contact authorities and let them know. Be a voice for that animal that may need one!

Until next week,

Be kind to your four-legged friends!

Orlagh xx
