Orlagh Winters: How Did Graham Dwyer Become Such A Monster?

Orlagh new profile 1I THINK that everyone in the country exhaled on Friday evening after holding their breath in anticipation of the outcome of the Graham Dwyer trial.

Never in my life I have been so happy to see this monster convicted. Even in her death this disgusting man desecrated the name of Elaine O’Hara.

My sympathies lie with the families of the two central characters in this real life macabre production. It must have been horrendous for Elaine’s family to sit feet away from this evil man and hear the evidence of how he tortured and ultimately murdered their loved one.

Dwyer’s own family surely wondered how did their own flesh and blood turn into this vile creature. The families are more innocent victims of the deeds of this horrible man.

One thing the trial has certainly done is highlight a dark world that would appear to be very much alive and well in good old Catholic Ireland.

Have the years of suppression by the church created an underworld of dark sex secrets and a form of escapism for the thousands who partake in sites such as Alt.com?

Has the development of the internet made it easier for crazed perverts to prey on the vulnerable? Is it because we are not as religious as we were in the seventies and eighties that these sex sites now exist and have so many members?

What has happened to our small country that fiends like Dwyer are granted the opportunities to prey and kill like wolves?

Graham Dwyer had what can only be considered as a normal upbringing in Bandon, so how has he changed from this “normal” man to one of Ireland’s most notorious killers?

Would he have ever been found out if the coincidences had not happened? Would he have killed again? Has he killed before?

Of course I am not qualified to answer any of these questions, but one thing I am qualified to say as a human being and in particular as a woman, is thank God that he is behind bars and we are all safer as a result.

I could not write about the trial without mentioning the stellar work by the Garda Síochána. Without their commitment to solving this heinous crime, Dwyer would still be walking our streets.

I am grateful to them and we all should be. Next time we want to curse them for doing their job, think about the tremendous job they did in protecting us, protecting our mothers, sisters, wives, aunts, daughters and nieces.

Rip Elaine, hopefully your life and death will not have been in vain.

Until next week,

Stay safe and look after each other!

Orlagh xx
