Over €800,000 For Climate Adaptation Work On Rural Roads In Kerry

AN allocation of €806,675 in funding has been made for the weatherproofing of Kerry’s regional and rural road network.

The funding was made available to Kerry County Council under the Climate Adaptation Investment Programme which aims to address the impacts of climate change and severe weather events on road networks.

In total 21 projects across the county — including ones in Flemby, the Spa and Banna (see below) — will benefit from this funding with many schemes aimed at carrying out important upkeep and improvement works that will support regional and local roads.

The funding has been welcomed by Minister for Education Norma Foley, Fine Gael Kerry TD Brendan Griffin and Cleo Murphy of the Kerry Green Party.

The works to be carried out include;

• Knockanish West, Spa, Tralee — Storm Drainage along L-2004 — €33,200

• Banna Carpark Pedestrian Ramp Reconstruct pedestrian access from WAW Discovery Point to strand €7,500

• Flemby – Rock Armour wall to retain road embankment — €14,000

• Ballinclemesig, Ballyheigue — Flood Remediation works — €17,000

• Maherabeg Road — Maintenance Repositioning and maintenance of existing rock armour for 800m of Maherabeg road €12,000

• Pollgorm Ventry — Raising level of road €69,000

• Scraggane Coastal Protection Scheme — Construction of a new concrete structure at the base of the existing concrete seawall to strenghten this wall and prevent any further undermining that is in danger of leading to the collpase of the wall. This seawall protects the structural stability of the L-5014 Local Road — €22,375

• Elistragh Bridge Healy’s Pass, Lauragh — Scour damage from flooding and crack in Arch Barrell — €35,000

• Sibin Bridge, Lauragh, Kenmare — Scour damage from flooding — €25,000

• Foildarrig Bridge — mitigate against scour damage and the undermining of the bridge structure — €41,600

• Carrigafoyle Coastal protection works €25,000

• R551 — Replacement of exisiting piped culvert which gives rise to flooding, excavate and remove series of piped culverts which have inadequate hydraulic capacity and replace with single span bridge / culvert €125,000

• Kilnanare Drainage Works Roadside Drainage Gullys and Pipes €80,000

• Aghadoe – Drainage Works Provision of Roadside Drainage Gullys and Pipes€60,000

• Flynn’s Forge – Slope stability protection measures for a cliff face/embankment adjacent to a Local Secondary Road €35,000

• Tomies Embankment — Repair Rock Armour to stability embankment to protect the road and repair slippage €30,000

• Ballyhar Embankment Repair — Piping of open drain and embankment stability measures to protect the road and repair slippage €30,000

• Ballybrack Embankment Repair — Piping of open drain and embankment stability measures to protect the road and repair slippage €30,000

• Coolick Embankment Repair — Piping of open drain and embankment stability measures to protect the road and repair slippage €15,000

• Coolroe West Drainage Works — Provision of Roadside Drainage Gullys and Pipes €20,000

• Bowlers Garage — Construction of retain wall adjacent to the Flesk River €80,000
