Kerry Travel To Face Cobh In Cup Tie On Friday Night

.

By Ivan Hurley

It’s a break from the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division this weekend as Kerry FC begin their second campaign in the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup in a game that has plenty of league flavour.

They face Cobh Ramblers on Friday at St Colman’s Park, Cobh with a 7:45pm kick-off. Despite exiting the cup in the third round in 2023, there was a lot to be happy about the Kingdom’s Cup campaign last term.

The squad secured their first-ever home win in Mounthawk Park against Ringmahon Rangers by 2 goals to nil thanks to a Ryan Kelliher brace.

Continued below…

.

SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division side Drogheda United were the visitors to Tralee in the third round. A gutsy performance from the league’s newcomers but our cup campaign came to an end by the narrowest of margins.

Kerry will be looking to go a step or two better in 2024 but has been set a tough task in the opening round. A first away cup tie is sure to be tricky against a Cobh Ramblers side that are a regular opponent for Kerry FC.

The clubs away from this season have been far from what has been expected. 4 draws away from home and without a win will need to be turned around tomorrow evening if Kerry are to progress without the dreaded extra time or penalty shootout.

Kerry come into the game off the back of an emphatic 3-3 draw with Bray Wanderers in Mounthawk Park last weekend in a game that had everything, including a hat trick for the now-league top scorer Ryan Kelliher.

Cobh come into the game off the back of a tough 3-0 defeat to Wexford FC in Ferrycarrig Park and are sure to be looking to bounce back from that result in front of their home support.

This is the first time Kerry have been drawn away in any cup competition in the club’s history. 2 FAI Cup games in 2023 were at home and the 3 Munster Senior Cup games up to the semi-final were played in Mounthawk Park

Conor McCarthy issued a near-full bill of health ahead of this game. Valerii Dolia is coming close to a return but the trip to Cobh will probably come too soon for the Ukrainian. Andy Spain, who missed last Friday night’s game due to illness, is back fighting fit and in contention.

“Look it’s a Cup competition, it’s exciting for everyone,” said Conor McCarthy. “We did well in the Munster Senior Cup. It’s kind of a one-off game and anything can happen so we are looking forward to the game itself. I suppose in the way we view it and our approach, I don’t think it changes a whole pile. We go there to try and win the game like we would anywhere else”.

Declan Nerney

There’s an expansive arts offering with an international artist exhibition, windows arts trail, community art on the church railings, and artist talks.

Exciting market-style food vendors in the form of Sean’s Street Pizza, Fox in the Box, Cahersiveen’s latest food van venture Off The Hook, and Prátái from the Marina Market in Cork.

A new outdoor and wellbeing offering brings outdoor sauna sessions, river kayaking, beach walks, guided tours and hikes, and yoga to festival goers.

Local favourites and community events include tractor pulling and sheaf throwing, bridge fishing, barman’s race, dancing showcase from local dance schools, and much more.

Wristbands are on sale locally from next week, and can also be bought in-person from the festival office on the weekend, or via eventbrite.

Wristbands are €20 for general tickets (age 16+), 5-15 year olds are €5, and children 4 and under are free.

There is a newly formed committee – which is entirely voluntary-run – that took over the reins for CMAF this year.

Lucy O’Sullivan, CMAF’s chairperson says: “We’ve worked hard to build on the established festival to continue its calendar of music, art and community events – but with a few new surprises and tastes in the mix too! Our broad musical line-up, expanded arts and outdoors and wellbeing offering for 2024, and new food vendors and tastes means this will be one of our most diverse festivals yet, and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy it.”

The festival relies heavily on local Cahersiveen businesses’ sponsorship from 100+ businesses. For a full programme of events, online tickets, and more information, please visit www.cmaf.ie

Whilst it may not have been the The Kingdom’s day on Saturday evening against Armagh in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi-Final at Croke Park where they went down on a final score of 1-18 to 1-16 after extra time, it goes without saying that all involved in Milltown/Castlemaine GAA are immensely proud of the ever impressive and inspirational Cillian Burke who put in a superb shift and kept the Kerry side going right until the final whistle.

Cillian came on off the bench in the second half of normal time to take up the wing-forward role but ended up in the middle of the park for the second half of extra time and led the Kerry charge.

The boys and their management team had a wonderful day out where they graced a terrific field to play games against Na Gaeil, Corofin and Annascaul between 4:00 and 5:00pm.

This was followed by a stadium tour. Thank you to to all the organisers who ensured everything ran smoothly and the kids really enjoyed their day out.

U12 Girls:

U14 Girls: Crowned County Champions

County Champions 2024 ..
An absolute massive shift put in by these girls recently (Monday, July 1st) in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. A game of two halves, with Glenflesk leading well at the break, our girls rallied and played some impressive football in the second half.

A ding dong battle to the final whistle, with our girls winning by the narrowest of margins.
It proved to be a historical evening for our club, the first trophy to grace the sod of Paddy Burke Memorial field won by an LGFA team. This couldn’t be done without the Trojan effort by this group of girls, the management team, the families, the supporters .. we couldn’t be prouder!! 🇳🇬🇳🇬
Thank you to Glenflesk for a sporting game, to the referee, and the Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football county board, and to our sponsor Clendennen Electrical Services.

Ombudsman Sees 9% Increase In Complaints From Kerry People About Public Services

.

THE Ombudsman, Ger Deering, received 109 complaints about public services from people in Kerry during 2023.

The figure represents a 9% increase in the number of complaints coming from the county since 2022.

The Ombudsman received a total of 4,465 complaints about public services in 2023. Details of the complaints are set out the Ombudsman’s annual report for 2023 available at www.ombudsman.ie

Continued below…

.

The Ombudsman investigates complaints from people who feel they have been unfairly treated by a public service provider such as a government department, a local authority or the HSE.

People in Kerry complained about a number of issues including social welfare payments, but also about services provided by local public bodies, including Kerry County Council and public hospitals.

The Ombudsman’s Office marks 40 years in existence in 2024. Ombudsman Ger Deering said that people should not be afraid to complain: “In most cases people’s dealings with public services go well. However, when something goes wrong we should complain. This gives the opportunity for the public body to not only rectify the individual mistake, but to help improve its overall service.”

The Ombudsman investigates complaints about public services provided by government departments, county councils, the HSE and most public bodies.

The Ombudsman is independent of government and provides a free and impartial service for dealing with complaints about most providers of public services.

The Ombudsman can investigate your complaint once you have complained to the service provider whose action or decision has affected you.

The easiest way to make a complaint to the Ombudsman is through its website: www.ombudsman.ie

THE iconic Atlantic Puffins are plentiful on Skellig Michael, (Sceilg Mhichíl) this season.

These colourful enigmatic seabirds are spending their summer on the UNESCO  6th century monastic island, where they are breeding and fattening their chicks on sand-eel and sprat.

The summer visitor arrived in April and will depart in August.  Puffin nest sites are found in burrows or in cracks and crevices across the island which offers protection from avian predators. Skellig Michael (Sceilg Mhichíl) is a Statutory Nature Reserve, a Special Protection Area, part of Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí.

Open Day At Fenit Lifeboat Station Will Celebrate Double Milestone

.

FENIT RNLI Lifeboat has a double cause for celebration this weekend as it marks the 30th anniversary of the return of the service to a new base in Fenit harbour after an absence of 25 years, combined with the 200th anniversary of the lifesaving voluntary charity.

The station is hosting and open day on this Sunday at the Fenit Harbour Marina between 1-4pm. They will offer tours of the lifeboats where adults and children can experience the internal structure and mechanics of the lifeboats.

Other activities planned for the afternoon include music, an RNLI Shop with items for sale, tea/coffee, light refreshments, water rescue demonstration, Irish Coast Guard Rescue 115 may attend.

Continued below…

.

The lifeboat was based in Fenit until its closure in 1969 and was manned by many of the original fishermen in Fenit.

Conditions were primitive at that time but the commitment to save lives at sea never wavered. Ironically, many of today’s voluntary crew are descendants of the original crew.

In 1993, a group of people who believed firmly that a service was needed in Fenit began the task of trying to get the lifeboat re-instated and based at Fenit Harbour. After great determination and hard work the case presented was successful.

On June 29th 1994, much to the delight of a very large group gathered on Fenit Pier, an All Weather Lifeboat could be seen in the distance having departed from the RNLI Headquarters in Poole, Dorset, UK some days earlier.

There was approximately 5 crew on board the for that maiden journey who were welcomed home to a rapturous round of applause on an emotional but very proud day for all of those people who had dedicated so much of their time negotiating the case for reinstating the service.

Over the course of the last 30 years, a new lifeboat station has been built providing a permanent base from which the majority of the Life Boat Operations are co-ordinated.

Fenit Station is fortunate to have an All Weather Lifeboat which can generally go to sea in reasonably rough weather conditions. Whereas, the small Inshore Lifeboat tends to respond to calls closer ashore.

The geographical area covered by the lifeboat volunteers would cover between approximately beyond the Blasket Islands and reaching as far as Kilkee in Co. Clare in the other direction. The service has been launched in excess of 700 times since it’s return to service.

CANCER support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, has been recognised for its vital role in supporting cancer patients and their families at a national ceremony in Dublin.

The renowned cancer support house was one of 16 such centres across Ireland that were presented with plaques to acknowledge their full membership of the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Alliance – a group made up of voluntary and charity organisations delivering support services directly to cancer patients and their families.

An additional 10 associate member charities were also honoured, including Kerry Cancer Support Group.

Continued below…

.

The Alliance advocates for, and supports, the development of integrated pathways between the cancer centres, acute hospitals, community cancer support services and primary care services.

All members’ development is in line with the values of Sláintecare, seeking to provide assurance to healthcare professionals that these organisations are working to an agreed standard as set out in Best Practice Guidance published by the NCCP.

Speaking after the ceremony, which was held at Dublin’s Farmleigh Estate, Recovery Haven Kerry Chairman, Tim McSwiney, explained that being compliant with the Best Practice Guidance for Community Cancer Support Centres is a true mark of quality.

“It offers us a yardstick to measure what we are doing against the standards required.  As a result, healthcare professionals have more confidence in referring people to our services. We are very proud to be a member of the Alliance,” he said.

Recovery Haven Kerry was represented at the event by centre manager, Gemma Fort and Client Services Co-Ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney and were presented with their plaque by NCCP Lead for Cancer Survivorship, Louise Mullen, Clinical Lead for Psycho-Oncology Dr Helen Greally, and Minister of State at the Department of Health, Colm Burke.

THE official launch of ‘More Precious than gold: My enduring connection with John McShain – the man who built Washington’ by Alice O’Neill – McLoughlin took place at Killarney House, which was launched by Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, T.D.

Alice was born the eldest of eleven children into an Irish farming family in Rosbercon, New Ross, County Wexford.

In1978, she was awarded a scholarship from John McShain- the iconic builder, philanthropist, devout Catholic with Derry ancestry, responsible for many famous American landmarks, including the Jefferson Memorial and the Pentagon.

Her  book records the lifelong personal correspondence Alice exchanged with ‘The Man Who Built Washington.’ His philanthropy extended to the Irish people in the bequeathing to the State of Killarney House and the surrounding thousands of acres incorporating the Lakes, Ross Castle, and Innisfallen Island.

In 2019, Alice had the honour of inducting John McShain into the Irish America Hall of Fame in her home town of New Ross in the presence of his relatives from Philadelphia and Derry. This is a tale of altruism, of gratitude, of faith and of a life lived in the pursuit of excellence.

Alice also donated her treasured correspondence of letters from John McShain for the archive at Killarney House.

Also in attendance at the launch were Members of the Ignatius A. O’Shaughnessy family, who was founder of  The Globe Oil and Refining Company – and  part of a consortium of wealthy American businessmen who were going to purchase the lakes of Killarney as a Country Club in the 1950’s.

Well done to our team and management who fought to the bitter end but unfortunately it just wasn’t to be our night. Laune Rangers dominated parts of the game and the movement by their forwards was hard to handle at times but like a typical Mitchels team we never gave up.

We kept chipping away at the Rangers lead with quick ball to our forwards who kicked some brilliant scores. Our backs, putting in some hard tackles and turnovers, ensured the Rangers danger men were kept in check all through the game.

With time up and 4 points down we mustered an incredible come back kicking 1-1 in the very last minute to draw the game. In extra time we tried hard but Rangers kicked an early goal and then pulled away giving them the win on the night.

We wish the very best to the Laune Rangers player who had to be stretchered off this evening after injury. We play Ballymac away on Monday at 7.30pm in the semi-final of the Division 1 Shield. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Kilmoyley Tidy Towns Unveils Artwork As Part Of ‘Love Your Waters’ Initiative

.
The community gathers for the unveiling.

THE community of Kilmoyley gathered for an unveiling of the wonderful work of two local artists last Thursday at Lerrig Reservoir.

As part of the ‘Love Your Waters’ initiative, Tidy Towns Kilmoyley commissioned the artists, Sandra Griffin and Seánie Horan, to collaborate on the theme of cherishing and saving our water.

Having welcomed everyone to the occasion, Tidy Towns Chairperson Padraig Regan invited the artists to explain how the process evolved.

Continued below…

.

Sandra spoke about how she loves the area, feels very proud to live in Kilmoyley and was delighted to be asked by Tidy Towns member John Fitzgerald to be involved.

.

She loved working with another artist on the design and there was friendly banter involved in the creative process. Sandra painted a seascape of glorious waves crashing onto a shoreline which was accompanied by the lyrics of the local song “Kilmoyley By The Sea”.

Having painted a number of various of other pieces of artwork including Lerrig Cross and Brick’s Cottage, fellow local artist, Seanie Horan’s piece took the form of Aquarius, the symbol of water.

.

He mentioned how he included the water drops on the ivy leaves of the painting to also symbolise the theme.

Both Sandra and Seanie simultaneously cut a ribbon to unveil the artwork. This was followed by refreshments of tea, sandwiches, freshly baked pastries and lots of chat at An Tochar Bán pub.

Tralee Parnells 12s after enjoying a Camogie blitz evening at The Spa Killarney

U12 Camogie
The girls enjoyed a fantastic evening of Camogie at The Spa GAA Club Killarney during the week when Killarney Camogie Club facilitated a six game in blitz.  There were some great displays of fantastic Camogie skills demonstrated by all teams involved. A huge thank you to Killarney Camogie club and to every team that participated.

Tralee Parnells 14s who played a challenge game against Sliabh Luachra during the week

U14 Camogie

The U14’s had another challenging but sporting game against a fast Sliabh Luachra team with a strong wind blowing which tested the skill set of both teams. A massive thank you to the referee on the night Diarmuid Brennan and to Sliabh Luachra for hosting the game.

Tralee Parnells U15s who defeated Abbeydorney by the narrowest of margins in the North Kerry Championship

U15 Hurling

In a thrilling North Kerry A Championship clash, our Under 15 hurlers emerged victorious against a very talented Abbeydorney Hurling Club side. Despite being down a few starters, Parnells managed to secure a hard-fought win by the narrowest of margins.

The game began with Parnells making some basic errors, which Abbeydorney capitalised on effectively. By halftime, Parnells found themselves trailing by five points with the scoreboard reading 0-08 to 0-03 in favour of Abbeydorney.

Our team struggled to find their rhythm, and it seemed like a tough uphill battle awaited in the second half. However, halftime proved to be a pivotal moment. After a much-needed break with orange slices and motivational words from the management team, Parnells came back rejuvenated.

The second half saw a significant improvement in their work rate and a reduction in mistakes. Luke Hanafin, in particular, began to influence the game significantly, scoring some spectacular points that lifted the team’s spirits. The decisive moment came late in the game when Parnells scored a crucial goal.

This turned the tide in their favour and despite a valiant effort from Abbeydorney, Parnells held on to secure a 1-point victory. The final score was 1-09 to 0-11. Hard luck to Abbeydorney, who played exceptionally well and arguably deserved something from the game. Overall, it was a great display of resilience and determination from our Under 15 hurlers, showing that even when down, they can come back stronger and fight for the win.

Minor Hurling

Our minor hurlers had a win over Crotta O’Neills on Sunday morning in Caherslee in the division one County League.

Kerry reached the final where they were very competitive but with a small panel on the day they simply ran out of steam and were defeated by Waterford.

Meanwhile, on Sunday the Kerry U15s were playing at Kilmoyley GAA club where they faced Clare. Parnells players Jessica Leen, Aoibhin O Sullivan, Orla Costello, Siofra Murphy, Emma Gaynor and Georgia Kennedy represented their county and came away with a win.
