IT was quite the emotional Friday at Holy Family NS as they said farewell to a teacher who retired after 35 years at the school.

Linda Hanafin spent her entire teaching career in the one school, having joined the staff there after graduating from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick in 1988.

“I’m honoured to have spent the past 35 years, my entire teaching career here in the school,” said Linda, who has served under four principals — Micheál Hayes, John O’Connor, Ed O’Brien and Maria O’Regan.

“Throughout the last three and a half decades, I have worked with wonderful children, colleagues, parents and Board of Managements. I have precious memories of my teaching days seeing our pupils learn and grow into independent learners, enjoying their stories, fun and laughter. I’ll miss all that for sure.”

Linda is married to Denis Hanafin and they have three children — teachers DJ and Karla and youngest Ben. She is also a sister of Cáit Ui Chonchúir who retired recently as Principal of Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn.

“As for plans, no major ones yet — some walking and travelling maybe in time. For now I am thankful to be retiring happy and healthy.”

There was a very special send-off for Linda by both pupils and staff. At 12 noon the entire school body gathered in the playground and gave her a huge ovation.

The pupils also sang a song, specially composed for the occasion, which Linda enjoyed immensely. A retirement cake awaited Linda in the staff room where Principal Maria O’Regan paid tribute to her dedication and service to the school.

“Mrs. Hanafin has dedicated an incredible 35 years of service to Holy Family National School,” said Principal O’Regan.

“Throughout her tenure at Holy Family Mrs. Hanafin has been a pillar of our educational community. She has displayed an exceptional commitment, dedication and professionalism in shaping the educational experiences of countless pupils over the years.”

“Mrs. Hanafin has not only contributed to the growth and development of our school but has also been an inspiration to so many pupils, as is evident by the growing chatter around the school of how much they will miss her!”
