THE beautiful surroundings of Balloonagh Convent Chapel was the setting yesterday morning for the beginning of the Architecture Kerry Festival.

A wide-ranging symposium, ‘New Life in Old Spaces’ was hosted there and Victoria McCarthy, Architectural Conservation Officer, Kerry County Council, was delighted with how it went.

“It’s the inaugural symposium, part of the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme. Our speakers are looking at a variety of topics, at old farmhouses, market squares, life in an urban town in north Kerry, so there’s a huge variety of topics which came up today,” said Victoria.

The aim of the new festival is to highlight the wide diversity of the architectural landscape in Kerry and to make some of the best-known sites of architectural significance in the county accessible to all ages.

A number of other events are taking place in Tralee. The Library is hosting an exhibition of the winners of the 2018 Irish Architecture Awards on Saturday from 12 noon which will highlight the contribution that Irish architects make to society for everyone’s benefit.

The showcase will be opened by the President of the RIAI, David Browne. Kerry architects will also showcase their work throughout the festival.

Later at 3pm there is an Exhibition of the Kerry County Museum Children’s History Club: ‘DennyStreet -Whatastory!’. Finally, on Sunday there is a tour of Ballyseede Castle Hotel.

The full programme of events is available on the Kerry County Council website or via www.kerrycoco.ie/AK2018 and will be available in council offices and libraries around the county. Scroll down for photos…
