TRANSITION Year students at Tralee CBS are busily preparing to take on a John B Keane classic this month.

They will tread the boards at the school on Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22 in ‘Sive’.

Teacher and director, Ellen McGillycuddy,  said drama is an important part of the Transition Year experience.

“Drama is an activity that students partake in as part of Transition Year here in The Green. This feature of the Transition Year course allows all Transition year students to sample drama,” she said.

“We pride ourselves on the fact it is not just the highly experienced students who are familiar with stage schools or performances that make it to our stage. In fact it is quite the opposite. The students who find themselves playing lead roles are students that teachers and parents alike may never expect. This is what makes the dramatic experience so worthwhile and character building.”

The transition years take on the production and do all the work themselves. Committees include the cast, props and costume, stage design and construction, marketing, event management and directors.

“All students partake in drama and it was in December we held auditions and actors were cast,” said Ellen. “It is interesting to note that from a class of 48, 20 boys auditioned for nine parts. This will just display how interested students are. There is a cast of nine actors.”

The play was chosen based on the personalities and opinions of the students themselves.

“We decided on ‘Sive’ by John B.Keane in early September. This is a gripping tale of a mercenary hardened rural Irish family matching their niece to a wizened old man with horrific consequences,” said Ellen.

“Sive, the victim in the tragic tale is played beautifully by Cian Donnelan. The money grabbing matchmaker is played by Michael Carroll. Sive’s aunt and uncle are played by Michael Kirby and Michael Everett. The doting old man who seeks Sive for a wife is played by Conor Fitzmaurice. Two travelling men attempt to brew trouble in the Glavin household and they are played vivaciously by Sean Quilter and Tom Farrell. The most senior and defiant member of this 1950’s household is Nanna Glavin played by Darragh Leen. Ruairí O Sullivan who is playing Sive’s boyfriend Liam Scuab. ”

Rehearsals began on January 2 and since then, the cast and all committees have worked diligently and enthusiastically. The stage is a type of pop up theater that is built within the school foyer. All teams of boys, particularly the cast give up lunch hours, after school , week nights, weekends and holidays to help prepare.

Ellen’s partners directing are Anne Moore and John Michael Fitzgerald. Also the transition year co -ordinator Mark Ryall has worked tirelessly constructing the set along with the staging committee.

It promises to be two great nights of drama at the school. Tickets can be reserved by calling the school at 0667145824. Scroll down for photos…
