IF you want to get a crowd to come to your table quiz, make it Harry Potter-themed!
That seems to be the message from O’Donnells in Mounthawk on Wednesday night, as around 200 people took up tables for a quiz to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and to remember Ballymac woman, Marian McCarthy, who passed away from cancer in January.
The response was incredible as there was 47 tables entered at €20 a table. Many made the effort, dressing as characters from the books/movies and they certainly knew their stuff, as at the end there was a tie-breaker with three tables deadlocked on 78 out of 80 each.
“The reaction is out of this world. So many people are dressed up and put so much time into their costumes, it’s amazing,” said Marian’s daughter Michelle McCarthy, who organised the quiz with her sisters, Deirdre and Claire.

“We thought we were prepared but we ran out of paper and pens and had to get more,” added her sister Deirdre.
Later that night, Michelle told us how much they raised.
“We raised a total of €1475 for the Irish Cancer Society and are absolutely blown away by all the support and the massive turn out. We just want to thank everyone that helped out, both on the night and throughout the organising, this wouldn’t of been possible without ye. A massive thanks to everyone that donated prizes and to the staff at O’Donnells for taking such great care of us. There are some real die-hard Harry Potter fans out there,” she added.
This isn’t the end of their fundraising to honour Marian’s memory.
A group of 12 – including daughters, Michelle, Deirdre, Claire, god-daughter/niece Martina, sisters Breda, Mairead, Eileen, Trish, Denise and her three sister in laws Denise, Hannah and Siobhan – are going to Dublin on June 6 for the VHI women’s mini marathon in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
Marian participated in the mini marathon along with her siblings to raise money for motor neuron disease after their father Sean passed from the illness in 2002. She and her five sisters then went on to complete the New York City marathon in 2005 for the same cause. Scroll down for photos…
