SECONDARY students in Castleisland were collectively star-struck after meeting GAA legends Killian Young, Henry Shefflin, Liam Sheedy and Aidan Walsh at a special event at Presentation Secondary School in the town.
The men, who have numerous All-Ireland and Provincial Football and Hurling Medals between them, visited the school after winning the Bank of Ireland “Meet Our Legends” competition.
School Principal, Katherina Broderick, said; “This is a huge honour for the school and we are delighted to welcome these true sporting legends to Presentation Castleisland. I want to pay tribute to Pierce Dargan and the students who led this initiative to promote a savings culture in the school. The initiative, which was led by Business Teacher, Pierce Dargan, required students wishing to take up roles as bank officials to submit CVs and attend for interview.
The successful students were given a training day in the school with a Bank of Ireland official. A massive effort was put in all year with the school bank, which was run every Tuesday lunchtime by five fifth year students. By getting over 65% of the school body to open accounts, they received the news that they had been triumphant in winning the overall prize.
The ‘Meet Our Legends’ event took place in the school on Thursday, May 12 from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm when the students were given a skills masterclass from Killian Young (Kerry Senior Footballer) & Aidan Walsh (Cork Senior Hurler & Footballer).
The Masterclass was followed by a motivational talk from Henry Shefflin (10 times All-Ireland Hurling winner with Kilkenny) & Liam Sheedy (All-Ireland winning Hurling Manager with Tipperary).
Members of the Munster Rugby team were also in attendance as part of the overall prize, signing autographs and posing for photos with all present. Scroll down for photos…
