‘Luxury Goods’ will open on Friday, February 27.

Siamsa Tíre opened its doors to a new exhibition this week where the entire floor is covered with 3,000 peat briquettes.

The exhibition officially opened yesterday (Friday) and will run until March 27.  In it, Sue Morris looks at ideas of domestic need and luxury in the context of our recent experiences of austerity in Ireland.

‘Luxury Goods’ will be a mixed media exhibition that will encompass both floor and various wall pieces that are made out of familiar household materials and objects.

Central to the exhibition will be a floor made out of approximately 3,000 ‘Bord na Móna’ briquettes laid in a pattern. The floor evokes memories of grand plantation houses, ghost housing estates and the traditional mud floors of simple houses from times past.

“Instinctively, my work starts small and concentrated but often moves into large format. Work that begins on the wall starts to cover the floor…. between drawing, sculpture and installation.” said Sue about her work.

Sue Morris was born in England and is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London. She has lived in Ireland since the early nineties. Her multidisciplinary practice uses drawing, text, printmaking, film, photography, sound and installation.

Galleries are open (Monday to Friday) from 10am to 6pm and admission is free.
