A REQUEST for public toilets at Rath Graveyard was turned down by the Council due to budgetary constraints and insufficient numbers of visitors to the graveyard, the meeting of Tralee Municipal District heard on Friday last.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley, brought forward the motion and was disappointed with the Council’s reply and asked how the Council measured how many people visited the graveyard.

“There are hundreds of people visiting on a daily basis and I’m sure we could find funding just to erect one or two toilets. There are visitors every single day of the year, many of them are elderly and need access to toilet facilities. We have them in other public spaces like beaches,” she said.

Director of Services, Michael Scannell, said an unmanned toilet facility could also attract anti-social behaviour and that would be unbecoming of a graveyard facility.

Mayor Foley argued that there is a caretaker who could unlock the facility in the morning and lock it at night when closing up the graveyard.

Mr Scannell said their was no funding for the toilets, but the Council would keep an open mind on it for the future.
