Roger Harty: Impossible?

I LOVE the old sayings, especially those that have withstood the test of time.

One of my favourite such sayings is ‘be careful what you tell yourself’ and I would like to examine this more closely.

So to further elaborate, I am also going to explore the following sentence.

They say whether you tell yourself you can or you can’t do something you are right. In other words if you tell yourself you can do something, you are right and if you tell yourself you can’t do something, you are right.

So on that basis in order to succeed in any aspect of life; be very careful what you tell yourself.

To elaborate even more and simplify things; if you want to succeed in any aspect of life, be it sport, business, or whatever, the best place to start is with the phrase ‘I can do this’.

Always start on the basis of ‘I Can’ because if you start on the basis of ‘I Can’t’ then you are already doomed to failure.

This brings me nicely to the title of my article above ‘Impossible’.

I think if we say something or think something is impossible to do, then it would be fair to say that we have immediately cut off the channels of success.

But, like many things in life, a small change can make a huge difference.

In this case the answer is a simple space – when we allow space, things happen.

Ok, where am I coming from here?

If you change the word Impossible into I’m Possible then a whole new world opens up and it’s game on.

A simple but very profound change. The art of success is based solely in the art of the Possible.

I distinctly remember watching that great golfer Colin Montgomerie giving a golf lesson in the art of putting.

He said there are two important aspects to putting the ball in the hole…

No.1: To visualize the putt you are taking.

No.2: Always believe that you are going to make that putt.

Whether you make the putt or not is really irrelevant, what is far more important is the process of believing that you are going to make it each time. That ultimately instils confidence in the putting game.

This belief in the Possible also holds true in all aspects of life.
