KERRY has a new champion in Sean Marshall after he scooped a gold and silver medal in the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Krakow, Poland, yesterday.

Sean, from Abbeydorney, a bone marrow transplant recipient (see previous story here) took the Gold in his category in the Darts, which he will present to his bone marrow brother donor Paudie when he returns to Ireland.

Sean also competed in the 5km mini-marathon earlier in the week which was an overwhelming experience for him/

“I went from being on the brink of death a short few years ago to racing in a 5km mini-marathon, this week,” said Sean. “I love my new lease of life. I would not be here if it was not for my amazing brother Paudie, this is his medal. This week is to celebrate my donor brother, what a man.”

Sean is also very grateful to his running coach Tina Donovan.

“I wouldn’t have been here in Krakow competing on the track if it was not for Tina. She kept me going through the good and the bad times and was a constant support. The support I have received from her, my family, friends and locality has been phenomenal,” he said.

Sean also shared Silver in the Darts team event with teammates Harry Ward (Dublin) and Bridie Nicholson (Sligo).

Well done Sean!
